Naval Base Guide
TL;DR: If you have orders to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, this guide covers gate hours, housing, schools, medical, and every number you’ll need in your first week. Start your free PCS Plan© to get a personalized roadmap built around your rank, your family size, and your report date.
Kings Bay is a small, tight submarine community where the gate you use matters more than at almost any other duty station. Most families assume the main gate stays open around the clock, and at Kings Bay that assumption is wrong — the Stimson Gate closes at 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, while Franklin runs 24 hours on those same weeknights. Getting that backwards on arrival day costs you an hour and a lot of patience. Families who land here smoothly almost always mapped the gates, the housing waitlist, and the school zoning before they packed a box, and our free PCS Plan© walks you through each of those decisions. Join the Kings Bay PCS Pay It Forward® group too, because rental leads here rarely reach public listing sites.
Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay sits in St. Marys, Camden County, Georgia, on the coast near the Florida line. As the Atlantic Fleet’s homeport for Ohio-class ballistic missile and guided missile submarines, this installation anchors the sea leg of U.S. strategic deterrence. Roughly 9,000 active duty, civilian, and contract personnel work here across about 16,000 acres, and nearly 4,000 of those acres are protected wetlands.
Several major commands share the installation. Consequently, your sponsor and your in-processing path depend heavily on which one you report to.
For the full picture of what a Georgia assignment looks like statewide, our military bases in Georgia guide covers every installation in the state. Meanwhile, the official NSB Kings Bay website carries current command news and installation notices.
Kings Bay falls under the Kings Bay/Brunswick Military Housing Area, MHA code GA074, using zip code 31547. Housing allowance here runs from roughly $1,650 per month at the junior enlisted end to a little over $2,900 for senior officers with dependents. Service members with dependents receive about 11.7 percent more than those without.
Kings Bay is an outlier this year. While national BAH rose on average, this MHA came down roughly 2.1 percent. Therefore, do not budget off last year’s number or off a friend’s rate at another duty station. Run your own figure through the BAH Calculator or the official DoD BAH Calculator before you sign anything.
Last verified: July 2026. BAH rates change every January — confirm your exact entitlement before budgeting.
Camden County runs well below the national average on cost of living. As a result, BAH stretches further at Kings Bay than at most coastal duty stations. Rentals and entry-level homes are both realistically within reach for mid-grade enlisted families. However, insurance and flood coverage change that math in some neighborhoods, and that is where families get surprised.
Want to see exactly what your BAH buys near Kings Bay at current rates? Your free VA Home Loan Snapshot runs the numbers — no credit pull, takes 60 seconds. For the mechanics behind how allowances are calculated, our BAH rates guide breaks it down by pay grade.
Four communities absorb nearly every family stationed here. Each one pairs naturally with a specific gate, so pick your gate first and your neighborhood second.
Closest to the installation and the most walkable option. Historic downtown, the waterfront, and the Cumberland Island ferry dock all sit within a few blocks of each other. Commutes run 5 to 20 minutes to the Stimson Gate depending on where you land. Notably, portions of the historic district and riverfront carry real flood designations, so check any address carefully.
The larger of the two towns, with more retail, more newer construction, and direct I-95 access. Most Kingsland neighborhoods route to the Franklin Gate in 5 to 15 minutes on a weekday. Junior enlisted families land here more than anywhere else, largely because the money goes furthest.
Quieter, more land, meaningfully cheaper. Consequently, the tradeoff is a 30 to 45 minute drive each way. On a boat schedule with 0400 departures, that commute stops being theoretical.
Some families cross the state line for the beaches and Florida’s tax treatment. Drive time runs 40 to 50 minutes to the gate. Furthermore, Florida sits in a different insurance environment entirely, and Georgia’s veteran property tax programs do not follow you across the border.
Not sure which area fits your family and your watch schedule? Start your free PCS Plan© — our local Kings Bay ambassadors know which streets flood and which subdivisions move fast. Additionally, the Kings Bay PCS Pay It Forward® group is where off-market rentals actually surface.
Family housing here is privatized and managed by Balfour Beatty Communities under the NSB Kings Bay Homes name. Options span two- to four-bedroom single-family homes, townhomes, and garden apartments across several neighborhoods. Amenities include a fitness center, playgrounds, splash parks, and athletic courts.
The Housing Service Center manages 449 privatized family homes. Average wait time runs 3 to 12 months, which surprises families who expect to walk into a house on arrival. Therefore, contact the Welcome Center the week your orders drop, not the week you arrive.
Single service members at E-4 and below live in unaccompanied housing. The UH complex holds 1,474 rooms, all non-smoking, with Wi-Fi, in-room cable, and 24-hour laundry on site. Official waitlist policy and eligibility live on the Navy Housing page for SUBASE Kings Bay.
Renting off base is the default here, simply because the waitlist outlasts many arrival timelines. Rental inventory looks thinner online than it actually is, since most landlords list through local property managers rather than national platforms.
Buying is also a genuine option at Kings Bay, and a common one. Camden County pricing sits low enough that your allowance covers a real purchase for most mid-grade families. Our Buying a Home Near Kings Bay guide covers neighborhood-by-neighborhood pricing, gate commute times, county property taxes, flood zones, and new construction. If you’re still weighing rent against buy, the VA Home Loan guide explains the benefit itself — zero down, no PMI, reusable at your next duty station.
Book lodging before you book anything else. PCS season here fills both on-base facilities, and Camden County has limited off-base hotel inventory to absorb the overflow.
Best fit for families on PCS orders. Rooms include kitchenettes, and pet-friendly units are available with advance arrangement. Continental breakfast, connecting rooms, cribs, and roll-aways are all offered.
Call ahead and the lodge will set your key in a lockbox. Enter the first set of double doors, turn left, and the boxes sit across from the vending machines. Late arrivals are routine on a submarine schedule, so plan for it rather than discovering it at midnight.
Open 24 hours, and better positioned for TDY personnel and single service members. Moreover, the NEX, commissary, MWR complex, Fleet and Family Support Center, and Navy Federal all sit within a five-minute walk.
Last verified: July 2026. Rates and pet policies are subject to change — confirm at booking.
Both on-base lodging options book out during PCS season, and each one caps how long you can stay. Meanwhile, the privatized housing waitlist runs 3 to 12 months. That stretch — after you arrive but before you have keys — is where Kings Bay families burn the most money on hotel rates.
BaseNest is built for exactly that gap. The platform lists short-term rentals near duty stations, and many belong to military families who own locally. Its founder is a retired Navy veteran with 26 years of service. He moved more than a dozen times himself, so the platform runs on a PCS timeline rather than a vacation-rental one. Every guest is verified as active duty, a military family member, a government employee, or a contractor. Additionally, identity checks run through Stripe and payments are collected automatically, which keeps deposits and monthly rent documented on both sides.
Plenty of Camden County homeowners keep the house instead of selling when they PCS out. Consequently, they need a tenant they can trust from a few time zones away. BaseNest is veteran-owned and built for that situation specifically, with low platform costs and guests who arrive backed by BAH or per diem. Furthermore, every listing is verified before it goes live, so the inventory stays credible for the families searching it.
No DoDEA schools operate on this installation. Instead, military children attend the Camden County School District, which runs 9 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 1 regional high school. Roughly 9,600 students attend district-wide at a 17:1 student-to-teacher ratio.
Four Camden County schools hold Georgia’s Military Flagship School Award, which recognizes districts that go beyond the minimum for military-connected students. Specifically, those are Crooked River Elementary, St. Marys Elementary, Mary Lee Clark Elementary, and Camden Middle School. Additionally, St. Marys Middle is one of only four state-certified STEM schools in Georgia.

Last verified: July 2026. Confirm current numbers and zoning with the district before enrolling.
Zoning is based on your home address, and parts of Camden County are growing fast enough that neighborhood schools occasionally hit grade-level capacity. Consequently, the school you assume you’re zoned for may not be the school your child attends. The School Liaison confirms your exact assignment from any address, at no cost, before you commit.
Notably, the School Liaison also supports families living within a one-hour radius, including Nassau County, Florida. So if you’re considering Yulee or Fernandina Beach, that office still serves you. Full details sit on the Kings Bay School Liaison page.
Camden County runs Connections Clubs at individual schools, pairing incoming military students with trained student ambassadors. Grades 3 through 12 are eligible. Furthermore, ambassadors host welcome activities and school tours before your child ever walks in. Sign up through the School Liaison or the district’s military families page.
The CDC offers full-day care, preschool, and before- and after-school programs. Enrollment runs through MilitaryChildCare.com, and summer waitlists build quickly. Therefore, request care the day your orders are cut rather than waiting until you arrive.
Gate access at Kings Bay is genuinely counterintuitive, and it trips up new arrivals constantly. Read this section before your travel day.
| Gate | Location | Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stimson Gate | Kings Bay Rd and Spur 40 | Mon–Thu 5:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m.; opens Fri 5:00 a.m. and stays open through the weekend | Pass and ID office: Mon–Thu 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Closed Fri, weekends, holidays. (912) 573-1180 |

Last verified: July 2026. Gate hours change without notice — always check the official NSB Kings Bay gate hours page before you travel.
Franklin is your weeknight gate, since it runs 24 hours Monday through Thursday. Stimson handles daytime traffic and then takes over for the whole weekend starting Friday morning. Jackson stays open around the clock and is the only gate your civilian guests, movers, or house-hunting realtor can use. Madison connects housing to the main base, which matters most once you’ve moved in.
Register vehicles and apply for passes at the Stimson Pass and ID office during working hours. However, that office closes Fridays entirely. When it’s closed, the Franklin gate sentry issues temporary passes to authorized patrons instead.
Three exits serve the installation. Exit 1 (St. Marys Road) feeds the Franklin Gate directly. Meanwhile, Exit 3 puts you on GA-40 East toward the Stimson Gate, and Exit 6 routes through Kings Bay Road to the same entrance.
Check in with your command quarterdeck first, then work through your sponsor’s checklist. Additionally, the Fleet and Family Support Center runs relocation assistance and can front-load much of this before you arrive.
Keep every document within arm’s reach on travel day. Our PCS binder and checklist lays out exactly what finance and housing will ask for.
Naval Branch Health Clinic Kings Bay handles routine care as a branch of Naval Hospital Jacksonville. Services cover general and pediatric primary care, dental for active duty, and mental health support. Specialty needs get referred out to military or civilian providers.
This is the single most important medical fact for a new family here. Emergencies go to the Southeast Georgia Health System Camden Campus on Dan Proctor Drive, just off Kings Bay Road. Notably, that facility coordinates directly with the installation and maintains a decontamination unit for hazardous materials incidents. Its Emergency Care Center runs 24 hours with 17 private treatment rooms, and the campus also houses an ICU and a maternity care center.
Drive that route once before you need it. On a submarine schedule, spouses frequently make that trip alone.
Active duty personnel are seen at the branch clinic, including for dental emergencies. Family members and other beneficiaries use the United Concordia dental plan instead of the base clinic. Therefore, get your family enrolled before you arrive rather than discovering the gap at a first appointment.

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) is your closest major hub, roughly 35 to 40 miles south via I-95. Plan 45 minutes to an hour, because southbound I-95 backs up on Friday afternoons and holiday weekends. Brunswick Golden Isles Airport sits closer to the north but carries far fewer flights.
Arrange transportation through your command sponsor before you fly. Additionally, confirm your lodging reservation and your gate before wheels down. If you land after the Stimson Gate closes on a weeknight, route to Franklin or Jackson instead.
Coastal Georgia genuinely delivers here, and families who explore early adjust faster. Cumberland Island National Seashore is reachable only by ferry from the St. Marys waterfront, and the wild horses and empty beaches justify the planning. Crooked River State Park sits minutes from the gate with trails, paddling, and campsites.
MWR runs a bowling center, fitness complex, outdoor rentals, an RV park, and Trident Lakes Golf Course. Furthermore, the Tickets and Travel office discounts attractions across Florida and Georgia.
Camden County’s best spots are not the ones that rank on travel sites. Our Best of Base Kings Bay list collects the 25 restaurants, parks, and weekend spots military families here recommend most — with drive times to a named gate, real hours, and which places close two days a week. That last detail saves more wasted trips than anything else on this page.

Franklin runs 24 hours Monday through Thursday, and Stimson does not. Jackson is your only around-the-clock option for guests and movers. Screenshot the gate table above, because cell service near the installation is inconsistent.
The privatized waitlist averages 3 to 12 months across 449 homes. Consequently, most families rent first and move on base later, if at all. Call the Welcome Center the same week your orders drop.
Almost nobody moves straight from travel day into permanent housing here. Therefore, plan for four to eight weeks in between. Navy Lodge covers the first stretch, and a short-term rental through BaseNest covers the rest without the nightly hotel bill.
Kings Bay draws a lot of partial DITY moves, largely because I-95 makes a self-move practical. Our DITY and PPM move guide walks the full process and reimbursement math. Additionally, read our guide to certified weight tickets before you rent a truck — a bad ticket kills a claim with no appeal, and that is the mistake that costs families thousands.
Submarine deployments are long, and communication is limited in ways surface-fleet families do not experience. Build your support network before the first underway, not during it. Furthermore, connect with your command’s Family Readiness Group as soon as you check in.
Service quality drops off outside central Kingsland and St. Marys. Therefore, if anyone in your household works remotely, confirm provider coverage at the specific address first. Rural Camden County is not uniformly covered.

It depends entirely on your arrival day and time. Monday through Thursday, the Franklin Gate runs 24 hours and is your safest bet overnight. From Friday morning through the weekend, use the Stimson Gate. Jackson Gate stays open 24/7 year-round if you are unsure.
No, and this is the most common mistake new arrivals make. Stimson operates Monday through Thursday from 5:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. It then opens Friday at 5:00 a.m. and stays open continuously through the weekend. Always confirm on the official gate hours page before traveling.
The Jackson Gate on Spur 40 is the public access gate, serving the golf course and family housing. Stimson, Franklin, and Madison are restricted to military ID holders, credentialed personnel, and escorted visitors. Movers, family, and realtors should route to Jackson.
Kings Bay uses zip code 31547 and falls under the Kings Bay/Brunswick Military Housing Area, MHA code GA074. Rates run from roughly $1,650 to just over $2,900 per month depending on pay grade and dependency status. Run your exact figure through the DoD BAH Calculator or our BAH Calculator.
Balfour Beatty Communities manages privatized family housing under the NSB Kings Bay Homes name. The Housing Service Center oversees 449 family homes, and the average wait runs 3 to 12 months. Contact the Family Housing Welcome Center at (912) 573-2056 as soon as you receive orders.
Two facilities sit on base. Navy Lodge Kings Bay is just inside the Jackson Gate and offers kitchenettes and pet-friendly rooms, with a front desk open 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Navy Inn on USS James Madison Road runs 24 hours. Both fill fast in summer, so many families bridge the remaining weeks with an off-base short-term rental through BaseNest, a veteran-owned platform that verifies both guests and listings.
All military children attend the Camden County School District, which has 9 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 1 regional high school. No DoDEA schools operate on this installation. Four Camden County schools hold Georgia’s Military Flagship School Award. Contact the School Liaison at (912) 573-8986 to confirm zoning for a specific address.
Yes. The Child Development Center offers full-day care, preschool, and school-age programs, with a separate Youth Center for older kids. Enrollment runs through MilitaryChildCare.com. Request care the week your orders drop, because summer waitlists build quickly. Reach the CDC at (912) 573-3888.
No. Naval Branch Health Clinic Kings Bay is a primary care outpatient facility only. Medical emergencies go to the Southeast Georgia Health System Camden Campus on Dan Proctor Drive, minutes from the installation. That Emergency Care Center operates 24 hours and coordinates directly with the base.
Active duty personnel receive dental care at the branch clinic, including emergencies. Family members and other qualified beneficiaries use the United Concordia dental plan rather than the base clinic. Call (912) 573-4212 with questions, and enroll your family before you arrive.
JAX sits roughly 35 to 40 miles south via I-95. Budget 45 minutes to an hour, since southbound traffic builds on Friday afternoons and holiday weekends. Arrange airport transportation through your command sponsor before your travel day.
Kings Bay hosts Submarine Group 10, Submarine Squadrons 16 and 20, the Trident Training Facility, the Trident Refit Facility, and Strategic Weapons Facility Atlantic. Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines and guided missile submarines are homeported here. Marine Corps Security Force Company provides installation security.
