Naval Base Point Loma: PCS Guide

TL;DR: If you have orders to Naval Base Point Loma, this guide covers housing, BAH context, neighborhoods, gate hours, schools, and everything your family needs to land in San Diego without the chaos. Start your free PCS Plan© to get a personalized roadmap built around your rank, family size, and timeline.

Naval Base Point Loma is one of the most technically demanding and genuinely beautiful assignments in the Navy — a peninsula base surrounded by ocean on one side and San Diego Bay on the other, home to submarine squadrons, the Commander U.S. Third Fleet, and some of the Navy’s most advanced information warfare commands. The assignment is real work. However, the quality of life outside the gate is some of the best the Navy offers. San Diego has year-round sunshine, world-class beaches, and a military community so large that you will never be the only family at the school orientation who just arrived on PCS orders. The challenge here is not the base — it is the cost of living. Housing, childcare, and groceries all run significantly above the national average, and planning ahead is the difference between a smooth tour and a stressful one. Our free PCS Plan© is built to walk you through every decision point before and after your move date — housing, schools, neighborhoods, and timeline all in one place. Join the Naval Base Point Loma PCS Pay It Forward® group to connect with families already stationed here who can answer the questions no official guide will.

Installation Overview

Naval Base Point Loma (NBPL) is a Navy installation located in San Diego, California, under the command of Commander, Navy Region Southwest (CNRSW). The base consolidated six separate Point Loma installations into one command structure on October 1, 1998. Today, NBPL supports approximately 22,000 military and civilian personnel across more than 450 unique facilities.

Additionally, the base serves 70 U.S. Pacific Fleet afloat and shore-based tenant commands. Current major commands include Commander, U.S. Third Fleet; Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR); Naval Information Warfare Center-Pacific (NIWC-Pacific); Submarine Squadron Eleven; Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center; and Tactical Training Group Pacific. If you are a submariner, an information warfare professional, or an intelligence professional, there is a strong chance your billet is somewhere on this installation.

The base sits on the Point Loma peninsula, one of the oldest communities in San Diego. Fort Rosecrans, established in 1852, became a Navy installation in 1959. It has been home to Pacific submarine operations ever since. For official installation information, visit the NAVBASE Point Loma official site.

BAH and Cost of Living

BAH at Naval Base Point Loma falls under the San Diego, CA Military Housing Area (MHA). San Diego BAH is consistently among the highest in the entire Navy — currently ranked 2nd highest of all Navy installations nationwide. However, it needs to be, because San Diego housing costs are extraordinary. The cost of living in San Diego runs approximately 55% above the national average, with housing and transportation driving the largest share of that gap.

For enlisted sailors, BAH covers a reasonable off-base rental in neighborhoods slightly inland or south of the city — areas like Chula Vista, National City, or parts of Lemon Grove. For mid-grade and senior enlisted, BAH begins to open up neighborhoods closer to the base. For officers, BAH is competitive for most of the Point Loma peninsula itself. The honest truth is that if you want to live in the most desirable neighborhoods immediately surrounding the base — Point Loma, Ocean Beach, or Sunset Cliffs — you will likely spend at or above your BAH. Run your exact numbers before you sign a lease.

Use the BAH Calculator to look up your specific rate by pay grade, zip code, and dependency status. For the full rate breakdown across all pay grades, visit our 2026 BAH rates guide. Want to see what your BAH actually buys near NBPL at current rates? Your free VA Home Loan Snapshot runs the real numbers — no credit pull, no obligation, takes 60 seconds.

Neighborhoods Near Naval Base Point Loma

There is no single “right” neighborhood for NBPL families — it depends entirely on your commute tolerance, budget, school priorities, and lifestyle. Below are the five communities military families consistently choose, with honest notes on each. If you are weighing two of these and cannot decide, start your free PCS Plan© and connect with an ambassador who knows the San Diego market from a military family’s perspective.

Point Loma — Walk to the Gate, Premium Price Tag

Point Loma proper is the neighborhood immediately surrounding the base. The commute is unbeatable — even the farthest reaches of the community are under two miles from the Main Gate. You will find Craftsman bungalows, hillside homes with San Diego Bay views, and walkable access to Point Loma Village’s restaurants and shops. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is a five-minute drive for families who love tide pools and coastal hiking.

The honest tradeoff is price. Median home prices in Point Loma range from $1 million to over $2 million, and rental inventory is limited. Rents for a 3-bedroom home in this immediate area typically run $3,500–$5,000 per month. Most E-6 and below families will find their BAH does not stretch far enough to rent comfortably in Point Loma proper — however, parts of Loma Portal and the inland sections of Point Loma Heights can be more achievable. Schools fall within San Diego Unified School District.

Ocean Beach (O.B.) — Close, Quirky, Community Feel

Ocean Beach sits roughly 3–5 miles north of the Main Gate and is a favorite among younger sailors and families who want a neighborhood with character. O.B. is one of the few San Diego neighborhoods that has resisted major chain businesses, giving it an eclectic, local feel. The Ocean Beach Pier, Newport Avenue’s restaurant strip, and proximity to Famosa Slough wetland preserve make it a genuinely pleasant place to live.

Furthermore, O.B. offers more achievable rents than Point Loma proper — though still above national averages. A 3-bedroom home rents in the $3,000–$4,200 range. The neighborhood sits directly under the flight path for San Diego International Airport, so expect jet noise during the day. It is something families either adapt to quickly or find difficult to ignore. Schools are San Diego Unified.

Liberty Station — Urban Walkability, Mixed-Use Vibe

Liberty Station is the redeveloped former Naval Training Center, now a bustling mixed-use community with parks, restaurants, shops, museums, and direct waterfront access along the North Harbor Drive side. It is approximately 5–8 minutes from the Main Gate, making it a strong commute option. The neighborhood is popular with officers and senior enlisted who want walkable amenities and do not mind paying a premium.

Additionally, Liberty Station connects easily to the San Diego Trolley system via the Old Town Transit Center, which makes car-free commuting practical if your command is accessible via transit. Rents here are competitive with Ocean Beach — budget $3,200–$4,500 for a 3-bedroom unit. The area is within San Diego Unified School District.

Mission Hills and Old Town — Character Homes, Solid Commute

Mission Hills is an established residential neighborhood northeast of the base, about 10–15 minutes from the Main Gate via Rosecrans Street. It offers a mix of early 20th-century craftsman homes, solid walkability to Old Town San Diego, and more achievable rents than the immediate base area. Old Town itself provides easy Trolley access into downtown San Diego and Mission Valley.

Notably, Mission Hills and Old Town San Diego are popular with mid-career sailors who want more space without driving 30+ minutes. Rents for 3-bedroom homes typically run $2,800–$3,800 per month. Similarly, the schools fall under San Diego Unified, with several well-rated elementary options in the immediate area.

Tierrasanta — Space, Schools, and the Murphy Canyon Military Community

Tierrasanta is about 20–25 minutes from NBPL but offers something the closer neighborhoods cannot: space, suburban amenities, and a large established military community. The Murphy Canyon military housing complex houses approximately 2,300 military families from all branches, creating a built-in community for arriving families. Tierrasanta is surrounded by open space and Mission Trails Regional Park, making it ideal for families who prioritize outdoor recreation and a quieter residential feel.

Furthermore, Tierrasanta offers some of the most competitive rents in San Diego for the quality of housing — 3-bedroom homes typically run $2,500–$3,500 per month. The commute on I-8 westbound during morning rush can push toward 35–45 minutes on bad days, so factor that in. Schools fall under San Diego Unified with several strong elementary options. For families considering buying, Tierrasanta is one of the more realistic San Diego neighborhoods for VA loan buyers at enlisted BAH levels. Visit our VA Home Loan guide to understand what your benefit covers in a high-cost market like San Diego.

On-Base Housing

Family Housing

On-base family housing across the San Diego Navy complex is managed by Liberty Military Housing through a public-private partnership. The Navy manages applications and the waitlist; Liberty manages the lease, property management, and resident services. There are more than 40 distinct neighborhoods for NBPL-assigned personnel within the broader San Diego Metro Navy complex — however, only a small number are physically located on the Point Loma peninsula itself.

Waitlists for on-base family housing in the San Diego area have historically run 12–24 months or longer for some ranks and bedroom configurations. Contact the Military Housing Service Center as soon as you receive orders — do not wait until you arrive. Early placement on the waitlist is the single most important thing you can do for your housing situation.

  • Military Housing Service Center (MHSC)
Bldg 3544, 2625 LeHardy St, Naval Base San Diego, CA 92136
    Phone: (619) 556-8443
    Hours: Monday–Friday, 0800–1700

For official Navy housing information specific to NBPL, visit the CNIC Navy Housing page for NAVBASE Point Loma.

Unaccompanied Housing

Unaccompanied housing eligibility at NBPL applies to E1–E3 personnel and E4s with fewer than four years of service. Each sailor receives a private sleeping room with furnishings, bed linens, and cleaning supplies. Unaccompanied housing is distributed across San Diego Metro Navy installations, housing approximately 8,540 personnel across 50 buildings. Your specific assignment depends on your duty location and unit.

  • NBPL Main Base Unaccompanied Housing
140 Sylvester St, NBPL Main Base, San Diego, CA 92106
    Phone: (619) 553-7530
    Hours: Monday–Friday, 0700–1630
  • NBPL Harbor Drive Annex

Temporary Lodging

The Navy Gateway Inn & Suites (NGIS) at NBPL Main Base is your on-base temporary lodging option. It is one of the most scenically located military lodging facilities in the country — situated near the tip of the Point Loma peninsula with direct views of the entrance to San Diego Bay, North Island, Coronado, and on clear days, Tijuana. Rooms include mini fridges, microwaves, free WiFi, and laundry facilities on site.

Be aware: the NGIS is located at the far end of the main base road, approximately a 30-minute walk from the Main Gate. If you do not have a vehicle upon arrival, plan accordingly. A 24-hour NEX micro-mart is within walking distance of the lodge. Dining options inside the gate are limited — budget for off-base meals during your TLE period.

  • Navy Gateway Inn & Suites, NBPL Main Base
Bldg 601, Kerrick Road, San Diego, CA 92106
    Phone: (619) 553-0594
    Check-in: 1500 | Check-out: 1100
Rates subject to change — contact NGIS directly for current pricing

Additionally, the NMAWC area has a separate NGIS location accessible from the Harbor Drive Annex. Demand for San Diego Navy lodging during PCS season (May–September) far exceeds availability. Make your reservation as early as possible — NGIS accepts reservations up to one year in advance with PCS orders. If you cannot secure a room on base, the NGIS will issue a Certificate of Non-Availability for off-base reimbursement. For reservations, call 1-800-NAVY-INN (1-800-628-9466).

Join the Naval Base Point Loma PCS Pay It Forward® group — families already here know which local hotels offer government rates and are military-friendly during the PCS crunch.

Schools and Child Care

School Districts

There are no DoDEA schools in the San Diego area. All military children attend local public schools, and which school your child attends depends entirely on your home address — not your installation. Most families assigned to NBPL will fall within the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD), one of the largest in California. SDUSD serves over 131,000 students from preschool through 12th grade. San Diego County as a whole has 42 independent school districts, so families living outside San Diego city limits should check with the San Diego County Office of Education to confirm their district.

School quality varies significantly by neighborhood within SDUSD. Before you commit to a rental or purchase address, research the specific school ratings for that address. The School Liaison Officer (SLO) at NBPL is your best resource for navigating enrollment, understanding mid-year transfer procedures, and connecting with Individual Learning Plans. Contact the Point Loma School Liaison Officer at (619) 553-8290.

Child Development Center

Child care in San Diego is in high demand — this is not an exaggeration. The on-base Child Development Center (CDC) at NBPL is an option, however waitlists apply. Additionally, not all Navy CDCs in the San Diego metro area serve NBPL families directly. The Navy also operates a network of licensed in-home child care providers regulated by the CDC and the State of California, which can supplement or replace on-base CDC access.

Register for child care as soon as you have orders — ideally before you even know your reporting date. Visit MilitaryChildCare.com to begin the enrollment process. Families who wait until arrival will frequently face 3–6 month waits for preferred care arrangements.

Youth Programs

Navy MWR San Diego operates youth sports leagues, teen programming, and after-school activities across the metro complex. For current programs and schedules, visit Navy Life Southwest.

In-Processing and Gate Hours

Checking In

When you arrive at Naval Base Point Loma, your first stop is the Main Gate (Post 6) at the end of Rosecrans Street. Gate security can direct you to your command and provide current information on ships in port. During normal working hours, you will typically report to the Administrative Office in Building 140, second floor, Room 204 — contact Admin at (619) 553-7537. After hours, on weekends, or on holidays, report to the Combined Bachelor Housing front desk, Building 601, to have your orders endorsed. The Officer of the Day can be reached at (619) 726-7423 for additional assistance.

Contact your command in advance to confirm their specific check-in policy, especially if you are reporting to a deployed unit. Personnel reporting to a deployed unit will be directed to the Transient Personnel Unit (TPU) at Brunton Hall on Naval Base San Diego. Requesting a command sponsor before you arrive makes the entire process significantly smoother — coordinate through your gaining command as early as possible.

Bring copies of your orders, medical records, dental records, and military personnel file. Before you go anywhere else, confirm your housing situation and get your family connected with the Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) at Buildings 211 and 212, 140 Sylvester Road — phone (619) 553-7505.

Use our PCS binder checklist to make sure you arrive with everything organized and nothing left behind.

Visitor Control Center

The Visitor Control Center (VCC) is located at 174 Rosecrans Street (corner of Strothe and Rosecrans), San Diego, CA 92106. It is responsible for issuing DBIDS credentials, contractor access, and special event access.

  • Phone: (619) 553-6787
  • Hours: Monday–Friday, 0630–1445; closed weekends and holidays
  • Email: NBPL_ACCESS@US.NAVY.MIL

All visitors requiring unescorted access must complete DBIDS pre-enrollment before arrival. Direct your sponsor to the VCC for step-by-step instructions. Rideshare drivers (Uber, Lyft) must have a DBIDS ID card for on-base access — confirm current rideshare rules with security before your arrival.

Medical and Healthcare

Naval Base Point Loma is served by Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), the world’s largest military medical facility and the primary medical resource for Navy families in the San Diego area. NMCSD serves nearly half a million individuals and offers a full range of services including primary care, specialty care, dental, pharmacy, mental health, and surgery.

On the installation, the Naval Health Branch Clinic (NBHC) at the NTC Medical area provides routine primary care, preventive medicine, and pharmacy services for NBPL personnel and their enrolled dependents. The NTC Medical Clinic Gate hours (M–F: 0630–1600) reflect clinic access, not emergency access — for true medical emergencies, the nearest off-base emergency room is UC San Diego Medical Center at Hillcrest, approximately 8 miles and 15–20 minutes from the Main Gate. Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego (Hillcrest) is a comparable alternative.

When you arrive, enroll in TRICARE as early as possible. New arrivals should visit the Beneficiary Counseling and Assistance Coordinator (BCAC) at NMCSD to confirm enrollment, resolve access issues, and understand your referral process. For TRICARE enrollment and regional information, visit the TRICARE West region page for Naval Medical Center San Diego.

For mental health support, the FFSC at NBPL (Bldgs 211 and 212, (619) 553-7505) offers clinical counseling, deployment support, and Family Advocacy Program services. The 24/7 Sexual Assault Reporting Hotline for NB Point Loma is (619) 279-2933.

Getting to Naval Base Point Loma

Naval Base Point Loma is approximately 4 miles southwest of San Diego International Airport (Lindbergh Field/SAN) and 10 miles west of downtown San Diego. No shuttle service runs directly from the airport to NBPL — coordinate with your command sponsor for a pickup, or use a rental car.

From San Diego International Airport (SAN)

  • Exit the airport following signs for North Harbor Drive
  • Head east on North Harbor Drive toward Winship Lane
  • Turn left onto Rosecrans Street
  • Continue on Rosecrans to the Main Gate (Post 6)

From I-5 South or I-8 West

Exit at Rosecrans Street and stay on Rosecrans to the Main Gate.

From I-5 North

Exit onto Pacific Highway; proceed to the Barnett Street exit. Go straight on Barnett (which becomes Lytton Street). At the first traffic light, turn left onto Rosecrans Street. Continue to the Main Gate.

Public Transit

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) connects the airport and downtown San Diego to trolley and bus stops throughout the city. The San Diego Trolley does not stop directly at the base, but the Old Town Transit Center is accessible and connects to bus routes serving the Point Loma area. For routes and schedules, visit sdmts.com or call (619) 233-3004. The Transportation Incentive Program (TIP) provides active duty personnel with commute vouchers worth up to $270/month — enroll through your command.

Things to Do in San Diego

San Diego is genuinely one of the best quality-of-life assignments in the Navy. The city offers world-class outdoor recreation, a diverse food and culture scene, and military discounts throughout. Here is where families consistently spend their free time:

Outdoor Recreation

  • Cabrillo National Monument — Located at the tip of Point Loma, this national park offers tide pools, whale watching (December–March), and panoramic views of the bay and ocean. It is a 5-minute drive from the Main Gate and a favorite for new families getting oriented.
  • Sunset Cliffs Natural Park — Dramatic coastal bluffs popular for sunset walks, photography, and tide pool exploration. Free, close to the base, and a local favorite.
  • Mission Trails Regional Park — 8,000+ acres of open space east of the city, ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and trail running. Popular with families in Tierrasanta and Mission Valley.
  • Pacific Beach and Mission Beach — Classic San Diego beach boardwalk life, approximately 8–10 miles north of the base. Year-round outdoor activities, surf rentals, and beach volleyball.
  • Balboa Park — 1,200-acre urban park containing 17 museums, the San Diego Zoo, gardens, and performing arts venues. Military discounts are available at multiple facilities.

Family Attractions

  • USS Midway Museum — One of the best military museums in the country, located downtown on the waterfront. Self-guided tours narrated by actual sailors who served aboard. Discounted admission for active duty.
  • San Diego Zoo and Safari Park — World-renowned. The Zoo is in Balboa Park; the Safari Park is in Escondido (~45 minutes north). Both offer military discounts.
  • SeaWorld San Diego — On Mission Bay, approximately 7 miles from the base. Military pricing through base ITT and the SeaWorld military program.
  • Gaslamp Quarter — Downtown San Diego’s entertainment and dining district, 10 miles from the base and easily accessible by trolley.

PCS Tips for Naval Base Point Loma

Contact housing the day your orders drop

San Diego’s on-base housing waitlists are long, and they do not get shorter. Call the Military Housing Service Center at (619) 556-8443 the moment you have orders in hand. Even if you are planning to rent off-base, calling early gets you information about waitlist timing, neighborhood options, and the local rental market that you cannot get anywhere else. Families who wait until 30 days before their report date frequently find themselves scrambling.

Register for child care before you know your report date

San Diego CDC waitlists can run months. Visit MilitaryChildCare.com immediately after receiving orders. This single step saves more stress than almost anything else you will do before arriving. The San Diego Navy childcare network is large, but demand consistently outpaces availability during PCS season.

Budget realistically for San Diego’s cost of living

BAH in San Diego is substantial, but so are the costs. Groceries, gas, utilities, and dining out all run 30–50% above national averages. Build your monthly budget before you arrive, not after your first month’s bank statement. The FFSC at NBPL ((619) 553-7505 or 1-866-923-6478 for appointments) offers free financial counseling — use it. Understanding your DITY/PPM move entitlements can also put meaningful money back in your pocket during the move itself.

Request a command sponsor early — especially for submarine commands

If you are reporting to a submarine or a deployed command, your command sponsor is your lifeline. Submarine schedules mean your sponsor may be underway when you arrive. Request a sponsor through your gaining command as early as possible and confirm a backup contact in case your sponsor is not available. The Officer of the Day at (619) 726-7423 is your after-hours resource if you arrive and cannot reach your command.

Plan for the airport to base commute carefully

San Diego International Airport is only 4 miles from the Main Gate, but traffic on Harbor Drive and Rosecrans Street during morning and evening rush hours can turn that into a 25–40 minute crawl. If you are arriving on a weekday afternoon with a rental car and a full load of luggage, add time. Connecting with your command sponsor for a pickup — or arriving on a weekend — makes the first day significantly easier.

Take the FFSC Welcome Aboard Package

The FFSC at NBPL (Bldgs 211 and 212, (619) 553-7505) provides Welcome Aboard packages, local area information, relocation counseling, and referrals. This is not a bureaucratic formality — the staff know this market, and the packages contain genuinely useful local contacts and resources that take weeks to find on your own. Visit them early in your in-processing sequence, and connect with the Naval Base Point Loma PCS Pay It Forward® group for peer support from families who have navigated the same transition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What BAH zip code do I use for Naval Base Point Loma?

BAH for NBPL falls under the San Diego, CA Military Housing Area. The primary zip code used for BAH calculations is 92106, which covers the Main Base area. However, your actual BAH rate is determined by your installation’s MHA and your pay grade, not the specific zip code you live in. Use the BAH Calculator with zip code 92106 to get your exact rate.

How long is the on-base housing waitlist at Naval Base Point Loma?

Waitlists for on-base family housing in the San Diego Navy complex have historically run 12–24 months or longer depending on rank and bedroom requirements. Contact the Military Housing Service Center at (619) 556-8443 as soon as you receive orders — not when you arrive. Early placement is the only way to manage a long waitlist effectively.

What are the Main Gate hours at Naval Base Point Loma?

The Rosecrans Street Main Gate (Post 6) is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The NMASWC/ASW Complex Gate on Lanning Road (off North Harbor Drive) is also open 24/7. All other gates have restricted hours — see the gate hours table above for the full list of all 10 access points.

Is there on-base lodging at NBPL for families arriving on PCS orders?

Yes — the Navy Gateway Inn & Suites at Main Base (Bldg 601, (619) 553-0594) provides temporary lodging. However, PCS season demand far exceeds availability. Reserve as early as possible using your PCS orders for priority, and contact the Navy Lodge at 1-800-628-9466 to check all San Diego locations. If no Navy lodging is available, request a Certificate of Non-Availability for off-base reimbursement.

What school district serves Naval Base Point Loma?

There are no DoDEA schools in San Diego. Most NBPL families fall within San Diego Unified School District, the second-largest district in California. The school your child attends is determined by your home address, not the base. Contact the School Liaison Officer at (619) 553-8290 for enrollment support, mid-year transfers, and school recommendations based on your neighborhood.

What are the check-in procedures when I first arrive at NBPL?

Report first to the Main Gate (Post 6) at the end of Rosecrans Street for directions to your command. During duty hours, you will typically report to the Administrative Office in Building 140, second floor, Room 204 — (619) 553-7537. After hours, weekends, or holidays, report to the Combined Bachelor Housing front desk at Building 601. Contact your command in advance to confirm their specific check-in policy, especially if they may be deployed or underway.

Does NBPL have a commissary?

There is no commissary located on Naval Base Point Loma Main Base. The closest commissary is at Naval Base San Diego, located at 2525 Callahan Highway, Building 3626, San Diego, CA 92136, phone (619) 556-8657. Plan to make the drive to NBSD for commissary shopping — budget 15–25 minutes each way depending on traffic and time of day.

Is there an emergency room on Naval Base Point Loma?

There is no emergency room on NBPL. For true medical emergencies, go off-base — the nearest civilian emergency rooms are UC San Diego Medical Center at Hillcrest and Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, both approximately 8 miles and 15–20 minutes from the Main Gate. Naval Medical Center San Diego handles urgent care and specialty services and is the primary medical facility for NBPL families.

What is the TRICARE enrollment process for families arriving at NBPL?

When you arrive, report to Naval Medical Center San Diego to enroll in TRICARE and confirm your primary care assignment. The BCAC at NMCSD can assist with enrollment, access questions, referrals, and specialty care coordination. Contact NMCSD at (619) 532-6400 or visit the TRICARE West region page for enrollment guidance before you arrive.

Is there base transportation on NBPL?

There is no base shuttle or on-base transportation at Naval Base Point Loma. However, the Transportation Incentive Program (TIP) provides active duty personnel with commuting vouchers worth up to $270/month for public transit. San Diego’s MTS bus and trolley system covers much of the city and is a practical option for commands accessible via transit. Some Uber and Lyft drivers with DBIDS credentials can access the base — verify with security before relying on rideshare.

What does San Diego’s cost of living actually mean for a Navy family?

San Diego’s cost of living runs approximately 55% above the national average. Housing, groceries, gas, and childcare are all significantly more expensive than most other duty stations. BAH in the San Diego MHA is among the highest in the Navy, which helps — but it does not fully close the gap for all pay grades, particularly junior enlisted with dependents. The FFSC at NBPL offers free financial counseling (1-866-923-6478 for appointments) — use this resource during your first 30 days to build a realistic budget before lifestyle creep sets in.

How do I get from San Diego International Airport to Naval Base Point Loma?

The airport is only 4 miles from the Main Gate, but no direct shuttle service runs between the airport and NBPL. Your best options are renting a car (12+ agencies at the consolidated rental car center), coordinating a pickup with your command sponsor, or taking an MTS bus toward downtown and connecting to ground transportation. From the airport, take North Harbor Drive east, turn left on Rosecrans Street, and follow it to the Main Gate. Allow extra time if arriving during morning or afternoon rush hours.

  • Contact housing immediately. Call the Military Housing Service Center at (619) 556-8443 the day your orders drop. San Diego waitlists run 12–24 months — there is no such thing as contacting them too early.
  • Register for child care before you have a report date. Visit MilitaryChildCare.com the moment you receive orders. San Diego CDC waitlists are long and unforgiving for late applicants.
  • Budget realistically. San Diego BAH is high — and it needs to be. Groceries, utilities, and childcare will all be significantly above what you paid at your last duty station. Build the budget before you arrive.
  • BAH is among the highest in the Navy — ranked 2nd highest for all Navy installations. Use the BAH Calculator to confirm your exact rate and compare it against neighborhood rents before you commit to an address.
  • The Main Gate (Post 6) is your check-in first stop — at the end of Rosecrans Street, open 24/7. Report here for directions to your command and to start your in-processing sequence.
  • The FFSC is genuinely useful. Building 211/212 at 140 Sylvester Road, (619) 553-7505 — they have Welcome Aboard packages, financial counseling, relocation assistance, and school liaison support. Visit them early.
  • Plan your move with a personalized roadmap. Start your free PCS Plan© to get housing, neighborhood, school, and timeline guidance built specifically around your family’s situation before you arrive.

Use the BAH Calculator at pcspayitforward.com/bah-calculator/ with zip code 92106 to get your exact rate.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “How long is the on-base housing waitlist at Naval Base Point Loma?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “Waitlists for on-base family housing in the San Diego Navy complex have historically run 12–24 months or longer depending on rank and bedroom requirements. Contact the Military Housing Service Center at (619) 556-8443 as soon as you receive orders — not when you arrive. Early placement is the only way to manage a long waitlist effectively.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “What are the Main Gate hours at Naval Base Point Loma?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “The Rosecrans Street Main Gate (Post 6) is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The NMASWC/ASW Complex Gate on Lanning Road (off North Harbor Drive) is also open 24/7. All other gates have restricted hours — there are 10 access control points total at Naval Base Point Loma.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “Is there on-base lodging at NBPL for families arriving on PCS orders?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “Yes — the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites at Main Base (Bldg 601, (619) 553-0594) provides temporary lodging. However, PCS season demand far exceeds availability. Reserve as early as possible using your PCS orders for priority, and contact the Navy Lodge at 1-800-628-9466 to check all San Diego locations. If no Navy lodging is available, request a Certificate of Non-Availability for off-base reimbursement.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “What school district serves Naval Base Point Loma?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “There are no DoDEA schools in San Diego. Most NBPL families fall within San Diego Unified School District, the second-largest district in California. The school your child attends is determined by your home address, not the base. Contact the School Liaison Officer at (619) 553-8290 for enrollment support, mid-year transfers, and school recommendations based on your neighborhood.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “What are the check-in procedures when I first arrive at NBPL?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “Report first to the Main Gate (Post 6) at the end of Rosecrans Street for directions to your command. During duty hours, you will typically report to the Administrative Office in Building 140, second floor, Room 204 — (619) 553-7537. After hours, weekends, or holidays, report to the Combined Bachelor Housing front desk at Building 601. Contact your command in advance to confirm their specific check-in policy, especially if they may be deployed or underway.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “Does NBPL have a commissary?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “There is no commissary located on Naval Base Point Loma Main Base. The closest commissary is at Naval Base San Diego, located at 2525 Callahan Highway, Building 3626, San Diego, CA 92136, phone (619) 556-8657. Plan to make the drive to NBSD for commissary shopping — budget 15–25 minutes each way depending on traffic and time of day.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “Is there an emergency room on Naval Base Point Loma?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “There is no emergency room on NBPL. For true medical emergencies, go off-base — the nearest civilian emergency rooms are UC San Diego Medical Center at Hillcrest and Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, both approximately 8 miles and 15–20 minutes from the Main Gate. Naval Medical Center San Diego handles urgent care and specialty services and is the primary medical facility for NBPL families.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “What is the TRICARE enrollment process for families arriving at NBPL?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “When you arrive, report to Naval Medical Center San Diego to enroll in TRICARE and confirm your primary care assignment. The Beneficiary Counseling and Assistance Coordinator (BCAC) at NMCSD can assist with enrollment, access questions, referrals, and specialty care coordination. Contact NMCSD at (619) 532-6400 for enrollment guidance.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “Is there base transportation on NBPL?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “There is no base shuttle or on-base transportation at Naval Base Point Loma. However, the Transportation Incentive Program (TIP) provides active duty personnel with commuting vouchers worth up to $270 per month for public transit. San Diego’s MTS bus and trolley system covers much of the city and is a practical option for commands accessible via transit.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “What does San Diego’s cost of living actually mean for a Navy family?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “San Diego’s cost of living runs approximately 55% above the national average. Housing, groceries, gas, and childcare are all significantly more expensive than most other duty stations. BAH in the San Diego MHA is among the highest in the Navy, which helps — but it does not fully close the gap for all pay grades, particularly junior enlisted with dependents. The FFSC at NBPL offers free financial counseling at 1-866-923-6478.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “How do I get from San Diego International Airport to Naval Base Point Loma?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “The airport is only 4 miles from the Main Gate, but no direct shuttle service runs between the airport and NBPL. Your best options are renting a car, coordinating a pickup with your command sponsor, or using public transit. From the airport, take North Harbor Drive east, turn left on Rosecrans Street, and follow it to the Main Gate. Allow extra time if arriving during morning or afternoon rush hours.” } } ] }
