PCS Pay-it-Forward

PCSing to Hurlburt Field

TL;DR: If you have orders to Hurlburt Field, this guide covers housing, gate hours, schools, lodging, and medical care. Hurlburt runs at AFSOC tempo, so start your free PCS Plan© and land here with a roadmap.

Hurlburt Field is small, busy, and built around a deployment cycle that never really stops. Roughly 8,500 active duty Air Commandos work here, on about 6,700 acres just west of Mary Esther. Because the installation is compact, your commute stays short — but nearby housing inventory is genuinely tight. Families who land well here start early, and our free PCS Plan© walks you through every decision point. Additionally, the Eglin AFB/Hurlburt Field PCS Pay It Forward® group gives you real-time intel from families already there.

Hurlburt Field Installation Overview

Hurlburt Field is the headquarters of Air Force Special Operations Command. The host unit is the 1st Special Operations Wing, and the base has been home to the Air Commandos since 1961. Several other major units share the ramp, which shapes daily life here more than most newcomers expect.

  • 1st Special Operations Wing — the host wing, flying AC-130J, MC-130J, CV-22, and U-28 airframes
  • 24th Special Operations Wing — Special Tactics, the Air Force’s ground special operations force
  • 492nd Special Operations Wing — the AFSOC schoolhouse and formal training unit
  • 505th Command and Control Wing — an Air Combat Command tenant
  • USAF Special Operations School — professional education for the SOF enterprise

What that means for your family

Deployment and TDY tempo here runs high, even by Air Force standards. Students at the 492nd typically spend six to twelve months on qualification orders. Operational tours, however, run the standard three years or so. Ask your gaining unit which category you fall into before you sign anything, because it changes the rent-versus-buy math completely.

Hurlburt sits inside the greater Eglin reservation, but it is a separate installation. Specifically, it has its own gates, housing office, clinic, and lodging. The base ZIP code is 32544, and the nearest city is Fort Walton Beach. For the statewide picture, see our Florida military bases guide. More detail on the installation itself lives on the official Hurlburt Field website.

BAH and Cost of Living at Hurlburt Field

Hurlburt Field falls in the Eglin AFB, FL Military Housing Area, MHA code FL056. Eglin and Hurlburt share that MHA, so your rate stays identical at either installation. Rates currently start near $2,000 monthly for junior enlisted members without dependents. At the upper end, senior officers with dependents draw roughly $3,600 or more.

Data last verified: August 2026. Confirm your exact figure with the DoD BAH Rate Lookup using ZIP code 32544.

To run your own number by pay grade, use our BAH Calculator. For how the allowance is actually calculated, our BAH rates guide goes deeper. This page keeps the summary short on purpose, because pay-grade tables belong in the buying guide.

The honest cost picture

Florida charges no state income tax, and that is a real advantage. Your BAH is already tax-free, so the savings stack. However, this is a beach market, and prices reflect it. Additionally, coastal homeowner’s insurance runs well above the national average, which surprises families arriving from inland bases. Budget for insurance before you budget for square footage.

One structural quirk drives the whole market. Much of the land between Hurlburt and Eglin is test range, so builders cannot expand into it. Consequently, supply stays tight and values hold well.

Neighborhoods Near Hurlburt Field

Where you live here is mostly a trade between commute and schools. Below are the communities Hurlburt families choose most, with drive times to the Main Gate.

Mary Esther

Mary Esther sits directly outside the fence and is the closest option, at five to ten minutes to the Main Gate. Housing stock skews older, with a lot of 1970s through 1990s brick ranch homes. Prices start lower than Niceville or Destin, which makes it popular with E-5 through E-7 families. Meanwhile, the school picture here shifted recently — read the schools section before you commit.

Fort Walton Beach, Ocean City, and Wright

These communities run ten to twenty minutes to the Main Gate. You get the widest rental variety in the area, plus real dining and shopping. Furthermore, Okaloosa Island beach access sits minutes away. Traffic on U.S. 98 is the trade-off, and it is worse than the map suggests in summer.

Shalimar

Shalimar is small, quiet, and roughly fifteen to twenty-five minutes from the Main Gate. Families like the pace and the price relative to Niceville. In addition, it puts you within reach of both installations if your spouse works at Eglin.

Navarre

Navarre sits west in Santa Rosa County, about twenty to thirty minutes out. The beaches are quieter and the schools draw strong reviews. Notably, your BAH does not change when you cross the county line, because BAH follows your duty station. Weigh the daily drive honestly before you fall in love with the sunset.

Niceville and Bluewater Bay

Niceville is the area’s school-first choice, and families with high schoolers seek it out. Expect twenty-five to thirty-five minutes to the Main Gate, and higher prices than Mary Esther. For Hurlburt members specifically, that commute is the real cost. Nevertheless, plenty of AFSOC families make the trade for four years of school stability.

Crestview

Crestview runs thirty-five to fifty minutes north, and it buys the most house for the money. As a result, it draws budget-conscious families and dual-military households. The commute is long, though, and it gets longer when U.S. 98 backs up.

Not sure which neighborhood fits your family? Start your free PCS Plan© — our local ambassadors know this market gate by gate. You can also ask directly in the Eglin AFB/Hurlburt Field PCS Pay It Forward® group, where families post rentals before they hit the listing sites.

A warning about rental scams

Tight inventory attracts fraud, and this market gets hit hard every PCS season. Never wire a deposit for a home you have not seen in person or by live video. Our guide to fake rental listings near military bases covers the exact patterns to watch.

On-Base Housing at Hurlburt Field

Privatized family housing

Mayroad owns and manages family housing at Hurlburt Field. The leasing office sits at 480 Weaver Avenue and runs Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (850) 344-0220 or email Hurlburt.Leasing@themayroad.com to apply. You may also apply before you arrive through themayroad.com.

The government Military Housing Office handles applications, referrals, and resident advocacy. Find it at 123 McMillan Street, Building 90371, open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Reach the team at (850) 884-7505 or 1SOCES.Housing@us.af.mil. Full program details sit on the Air Force Housing site for Hurlburt Field.

Homes here are not individually metered, so gas and electric costs are included in rent up to your full BAH. Leases run about a year and include a military clause. Additionally, community amenities include playgrounds, an RV lot, walking tracks, a marina, and a boat launch. Waitlist length swings by rank and bedroom count, so call the MHO the week your orders drop.

Unaccompanied housing

Dorm rooms go to E-1 through E-3, plus E-4 with under three years of service. The Consolidated Dorm Management Office sits at 320 Tully Avenue and answers at (850) 884-3188. Each Airman gets a private sleeping room with furnishings and linens provided. E-4s past three years must report to the housing office before signing any off-base lease.

On base versus buying

On-base living costs you exactly your BAH, with utilities and yard care folded in. Buying, by contrast, lets you keep the difference when your payment lands under your allowance. Because inventory is limited here, homes have historically held their value well. Our VA Home Loan guide explains the mechanics, including $0 down and no PMI. For neighborhood-level market data, taxes, and insurance math, see our buying a home near Eglin AFB and Hurlburt Field guide.

Weighing rent against buy? Your free VA Home Loan Snapshot shows what your payment actually looks like here — taxes and insurance included, no credit pull.

Temporary Lodging: The Commando Inn

The Commando Inn handles all on-base lodging, across a mainside campus and a soundside campus. Find the lodging office at 301 Tully Street, Building 90509, open 24 hours. Book by phone at (850) 884-7115 or online through af.dodlodging.net. Members in PCS status may reserve a Temporary Lodging Facility unit at any time.

The inn holds 32 TLF units total — 24 one-bedroom and 8 two-bedroom. Twelve of those are pet friendly, and they go first. Every TLF unit includes a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, and a pullout sofa. Two-bedroom units sleep a family of six comfortably.

Room type Nov–Feb Mar–May Jun–Jul Aug–Oct
Temporary Lodging Facility (TLF) $107 $175 $203 $152
Visiting Quarters (VOQ/VQ) $99 $164 $185 $144
Distinguished Visitor Quarters $107 $171 $218 $151

Last verified: August 2026. Rates are seasonal and subject to change — confirm at booking.

Here is the practical warning. Only 32 TLF units serve an entire installation during peak PCS season. Therefore, call the day your orders are official, not the week you fly. If nothing is available, families in the Eglin AFB/Hurlburt Field PCS Pay It Forward® group regularly share short-term rental leads.

Schools and Child Care

Okaloosa County School District serves families living on Hurlburt Field. No DoDEA schools operate at this installation, so every student attends a public district school. Families living west in Santa Rosa County fall under Santa Rosa County District Schools instead.

Zoned schools for base residents

Students living on Hurlburt Field are zoned to Florosa Elementary, Bruner Middle School, and Fort Walton Beach High School. Your physical address determines the zone, not your installation. However, active duty base residents may use school of choice, sending students to any school in either district up to capacity. Transportation for a choice school is on you.

What changed recently — read this before you sign a lease

The Okaloosa County School Board voted unanimously to close Mary Esther Elementary and Longwood Elementary. Both closed at the end of the 2025–26 school year, driven by a 19.3% enrollment decline across south county over the past decade. Students from those two schools were rezoned to six campuses: Edwins, Elliott Point, Florosa, Kenwood, Shalimar, and Wright.

This matters because Mary Esther Elementary served the neighborhoods closest to the Main Gate. Consequently, older guides and older listing descriptions are now wrong about that zone. Run your exact address through the district’s school locator before you commit to a house.

School Liaison

Lacey Allen serves as the Hurlburt Field School Liaison, reachable at (850) 884-6829. The School Liaison handles records transfers, Interstate Compact questions, and zoning confusion. Reach out before you arrive, not after the first day of school.

Child Development Centers

Hurlburt runs three Child Development Centers for children six weeks through five years. All three open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. They close on all federal holidays.

Register at MilitaryChildCare.com the day orders drop, and attach your PCS orders. Requests then enter the waitlist by priority category. Beyond full-time care, Hurlburt offers hourly care, Florida Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten at no cost, and slot leasing through the Kinderspot app.

Two programs deserve more attention than they get. Spouses of active duty members receive free Family Child Care during documented appointments, including job interviews. Additionally, deployment child care provides 16 free hours before, during each month of, and after a deployment. Call (850) 884-4300 for both. For summer coverage, our roundup of summer camps for military kids is worth bookmarking.

In-Processing and Gate Hours

Last verified: August 2026. Gate status changes with mission requirements — verify before you drive.

Visitor Control Center

Hurlburt enforces a 100% ID check, and no visitor enters without a pass. Your sponsor must hold a valid .mil address and email a completed request to the VCC. Send it at least three duty days ahead for nine or fewer guests. Groups of ten or more require the Base Access List process and five duty days.

The VCC runs Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reach it at (850) 884-2310. First-time guests must register their REAL ID in person. Full instructions and templates sit on the official Hurlburt Field visitor access page.

Your first stop on arrival

Check in with your unit CSS first, and collect your in-processing checklist. From there, the Commando Welcome Center handles the rest of your orientation. Bring a copy of your orders.

Finance in-processing happens at Building 90210, first floor, listed on maps as 1 SOCPTS. Schedule a one-on-one appointment rather than walking in. The DoD target is filing your PCS travel voucher within five duty days of arrival — and before house hunting or chargeable leave.

What to bring to your finance appointment

  • Printed PCS orders
  • Official airfare receipt and itinerary, if applicable
  • Lodging receipt for TLE, if applicable
  • VPC vehicle shipment form, if applicable
  • Receipts for taxi, rideshare, or commercial bus travel
  • Your current local address and new unit or office symbol

If your dependency status changed en route, bring supporting documents. Marriage certificates, birth certificates, and divorce decrees all apply. The DEERS office at 212 Lukasik Avenue, Building 90210, Room 143 runs by appointment at (850) 884-5321. Keeping every document in one place makes this painless, which is exactly why we built the PCS binder and checklist.

Medical and Healthcare

The 1st Special Operations Medical Group provides care at 113 Lielmanis Avenue. The clinic runs Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Every Wednesday it closes for training until 9:30 a.m., and it closes on federal holidays. Book appointments through the MHS GENESIS patient portal.

Services include family health, flight medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, dental, pharmacy, optometry, physical therapy, and behavioral health. Referrals for anything beyond that generally route to Eglin or the civilian network. More detail sits on the 1st Special Operations Medical Group website.

There is no emergency room on base

This is the single most important medical fact for a new family here. Hurlburt Field offers no emergency care and no urgent care. Call 911 for anything life-threatening, including mental health emergencies.

  • Nearest military ER: 96th Medical Group, 307 Boatner Road, Eglin AFB — (850) 883-8227
  • Nearest civilian ER: Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, 1000 Mar Walt Drive — (850) 862-1111, open 24/7
  • Unsure? Military Health System Nurse Advice Line — 1-800-874-2273

Fort Walton Beach Medical Center operates the only Level II trauma center in the tri-county area. It also runs a dedicated pediatric ER. Twin Cities Hospital in Niceville and 24/7 freestanding ERs in Navarre and Destin round out the options. Establish care during your first month, rather than waiting until someone gets sick.

Getting There

Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) is the closest option, about 15 miles from the Main Gate. Plan on 25 to 35 minutes, and longer during beach season. Allegiant, American, Delta, Southwest, and United all serve it. Interestingly, the airport sits on Eglin AFB property, which occasionally confuses rental car pickup.

Pensacola International (PNS) sits roughly an hour west and often prices lower. Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP) is about an hour east near Panama City. For driving, I-10 runs east and west across the Panhandle, with U.S. 98 carrying you along the coast. From VPS, take State Road 85 south, then follow U.S. 98 west toward Mary Esther.

No Amtrak service reaches this part of Florida. Consequently, most families drive in or fly into VPS. If you are managing your own move, our DITY and PPM move guide covers weight tickets and reimbursement.

Things to Do Near Hurlburt Field

Beaches and the water

The Emerald Coast earns its name, and the water genuinely looks like that in photos. Okaloosa Island sits about fifteen minutes away with free public access and a fishing pier. Navarre Beach, roughly twenty-five minutes west, stays quieter and less crowded. For state park facilities, Henderson Beach State Park in Destin is worth the drive.

On base

  • Hurlburt Memorial Air Park — restored special operations aircraft, free to walk
  • Gator Lakes Golf Course — open to civilian guests who apply for a pass
  • Outdoor Recreation and the Soundside marina — kayaks, boats, and gear rental
  • Hurlburt Lanes bowling center, plus the Aderholt and Commando fitness centers

Off base with kids

  • Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, Fort Walton Beach — dolphins, sea turtles, and military discounts
  • The Boardwalk on Okaloosa Island — waterfront dining and beach rentals
  • Air Force Armament Museum, outside the Eglin gate — free admission and no base access required
  • HarborWalk Village, Destin — charters, boat tours, and live music

Weekend hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. A Base Exchange also operates on the installation.

PCS Tips for Hurlburt Field

Book lodging before you book anything else

Thirty-two TLF units cover an entire installation through peak season. Call (850) 884-7115 the day orders are official. Pet-friendly units disappear first, so mention pets immediately.

Ask which gate serves your squadron

Hurlburt is compact, but the Main Gate and East Gate pull from opposite directions. A neighborhood that looks close on a map may add fifteen minutes daily. Therefore, ask your sponsor exactly where your work center sits before you tour houses.

Plan around hurricane season

Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and this coast takes direct hits. Buy renters or homeowners coverage well before June, because policies carry waiting periods. Additionally, register with the installation emergency notification system as soon as you arrive. Keep your fuel tank above half through the fall.

Respect the summer traffic

U.S. 98 is the only real east-west artery, and tourists own it from Memorial Day through Labor Day. A twenty-minute commute from Destin can become forty-five in July. Consequently, test drive your commute at rush hour before you sign.

Build your network before the first deployment

AFSOC tempo is the defining feature of this assignment, and it arrives faster than most families expect. Get connected early through the Eglin AFB/Hurlburt Field PCS Pay It Forward® group and the Airman & Family Readiness Center. Every smooth PCS starts with a plan — start your free PCS Plan© and get a roadmap for your move to Hurlburt Field.

Hurlburt Field PCS FAQs

What ZIP code do I use for Hurlburt Field BAH?

Use ZIP code 32544 when you run your rate. Hurlburt Field sits in the Eglin AFB, FL Military Housing Area, code FL056. Eglin and Hurlburt draw the same rate, so your installation does not change the number.

Are Hurlburt Field’s gates open 24 hours?

The Main Gate and the East Gate both run 24 hours a day. Kerwood Gate is closed until further notice. Gate status here changes with mission requirements, so confirm before you drive.

How do I get a visitor pass for Hurlburt Field?

Your sponsor emails a completed visitor request to the Visitor Control Center at least three duty days ahead. After the background check clears, first-time guests register in person at the VCC. The VCC runs Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Who manages on-base housing at Hurlburt Field, and how long is the wait?

Mayroad owns and manages privatized family housing here, reachable at (850) 344-0220. The government Military Housing Office handles applications and advocacy at (850) 884-7505. Wait times swing widely by rank and bedroom count, so call for a current estimate the week your orders drop.

What school district serves Hurlburt Field?

Okaloosa County School District serves families living on Hurlburt Field. No DoDEA schools operate at this installation. Base residents are zoned to Florosa Elementary, Bruner Middle School, and Fort Walton Beach High School.

Did Mary Esther Elementary close?

Yes. The Okaloosa County School Board voted to close Mary Esther Elementary and Longwood Elementary at the end of the 2025–26 school year. Students were rezoned to Edwins, Elliott Point, Florosa, Kenwood, Shalimar, and Wright elementary schools. Check the district’s school locator before you sign a lease.

Does Hurlburt Field have an emergency room?

No. The 1st Special Operations Medical Group provides no emergency or urgent care. Call 911 for anything life-threatening. Fort Walton Beach Medical Center runs the area’s only Level II trauma center, at 1000 Mar Walt Drive.

How do I book temporary lodging at Hurlburt Field?

Book the Commando Inn at (850) 884-7115 or online at af.dodlodging.net. Members in PCS status may reserve a TLF unit at any time. Only 32 TLF units exist, so call the day your orders drop.

What do I do first when I arrive at Hurlburt Field?

Check in with your unit CSS and pick up your in-processing checklist. Next, report to the Commando Welcome Center with copies of your orders. Finance in-processing happens at Building 90210, and the DoD target is filing your travel voucher within five duty days.

How far is the airport from Hurlburt Field?

Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport sits about 15 miles from the Main Gate. Plan on 25 to 35 minutes, and longer in beach season. Pensacola International is roughly an hour west and often cheaper.

Where do most Hurlburt Field families live off base?

Mary Esther is closest, at five to ten minutes from the Main Gate. Fort Walton Beach, Ocean City, and Wright follow at ten to twenty minutes. Families chasing schools tend to look at Navarre or Niceville instead.

Is Hurlburt Field the same as Eglin Air Force Base?

No. Hurlburt Field is a separate installation about seven miles west of Eglin along U.S. 98. It shares the Eglin reservation and the same BAH rate. However, the gates, housing office, clinic, and mission are all its own.

Key Takeaways

  • Book the Commando Inn immediately. Thirty-two TLF units serve the whole base, and PCS season empties them.
  • Confirm your school zone before you sign. Mary Esther Elementary closed, and older guides still list it.
  • There is no ER on base. Save Fort Walton Beach Medical Center at (850) 862-1111 in your phone now.
  • Call Mayroad and register for child care the same week. Both lists move slowly, and neither waits for your arrival.
  • Ask which gate serves your unit. Commute here is measured gate to gate, not base to base.
  • Buy hurricane coverage before June. Policies carry waiting periods, and this coast takes direct hits.
  • Plan for AFSOC tempo. Build your support network before the first deployment, not during it.
  • Get a roadmap. Start your free PCS Plan© and get matched with an ambassador who knows this market.
