Introduction
A Base Like No Other
Joint Base Lewis-McChord brings together the U.S. Army’s Fort Lewis and the U.S. Air Force’s McChord Field, creating a hub of joint operations and training for all branches. You’ll find units from the I Corps and 62nd Airlift Wing, as well as support commands and special operations units.
What really sets JBLM apart is its size, it’s one of the largest military installations in the U.S., and its access to everything from rugged hiking trails to city nightlife. Whether you’re training in the field, commuting to Seattle, or relaxing near Puget Sound, you’re never far from something to explore.

- Lacey – A little farther south, known for its friendly community and excellent schools.
- Steilacoom – Quiet, historic, and perfect for anyone who wants a small-town coastal vibe.
- Tacoma – More urban, with restaurants, museums, and a growing downtown scene.

#1 Puyallup / South Hill: convenience with congestion
Families called out bigger-store convenience and lots of housing options, but also heavier traffic and a more “urban” feel in places. Expect busier roads at rush hour and block-by-block variation in upkeep. If a quick commute matters, timing and gate choice make a big difference.
#2 Yelm: rural calm, slower pace… and school funding questions
The draw here is space, quieter streets, and small-town vibes. Several folks love the slower pace. A recurring note, though: recent levy failures mean the school district is trimming programs (including some sports), so check current status if activities are a priority.
#3 Lacey / Olympia: family hubs with an eclectic streak
Comments painted this area as family-forward with parks, play options, and an inclusive, “alternative” mix of lifestyles. It feels established and community-oriented. Commute time varies by gate and time of day, but day-to-day amenities are easy.
#4 North Tacoma / University Place / Steilacoom: character—and mixed pockets
Closer to the water and older housing stock, this zone has charm and personality. Some pockets feel beautifully kept; others can read more worn. It’s very block-specific, so drive the streets you’re considering and compare feel, noise, and upkeep at different times.
#5 DuPont / Lakewood (gate-close): shortest to base, not always shortest overall
Being near the gates is a win for on-base days. But if you work north (e.g., toward Federal Way), multiple families reported that the commute can still stretch to about an hour each way in peak traffic. Gate proximity = great; regional traffic patterns still apply.
Schools and Family Life at JBLM
Families stationed at JBLM have access to several highly rated school districts, including Clover Park, Bethel, and Steilacoom Historical School Districts. Depending on where you live, you’ll find both public and DoDEA options.
The base also has strong childcare programs through CYS (Child and Youth Services) and a vibrant network of family activities, recreation centers, and support services.
For off-duty fun, you’ll find everything from fishing at American Lake, hiking Mount Rainier National Park, or exploring the Tacoma waterfront. It’s easy to see why many families say JBLM feels like the best mix of adventure and community support.
