Alexandria, VA is the most popular choice for JBAB families with dependents. It sits south of the city, puts you on the I-95/I-395 corridor toward base, and has excellent schools. Woodbridge / Dale City, VA gives you significantly more house for your money — 3BR townhomes in the $2,000–$2,700 range are common. JBAB has stricter gate access than many bases — this is Washington, DC, and the security posture reflects that. Here’s what to know:
Active duty and dependents with valid CAC/ID cards use designated entry lanes — expect higher scrutiny than at most installations.
Visitors must be pre-registered by a sponsor OR report to the Visitor Control Center during operating hours. Bring a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or passport — the VCC is strict about this. Commercial vehicles have very tight clearances on the base roads — research your route before bringing a large truck.

The pharmacy gets consistently good reviews — fast service, prescriptions typically ready within 30 minutes. The dental clinic has similarly positive feedback once you get an appointment, but reaching them by phone is notoriously difficult. The Bolling Commissary is clean, well-stocked, and has covered/shaded solar parking — a genuine quality of life win when it’s 95°F in August (and it will be).
