Nellis-Creech Air Force Base

Air Force Base Guide

Your PCS Guide to Nellis–Creech Air Force Base: What Military Families Really Want to Know

Orders to Nellis–Creech Air Force Base put you in the Las Vegas metro — desert mountains, year-round sunshine, and one of the most unique duty station packages in the Air Force. Nellis AFB, 12 miles northeast of the Las Vegas Strip, is the “Home of the Fighter Pilot” and houses more schools and squadrons than any other USAF installation in the world. Creech AFB is a separate, operationally distinct base 45 miles northwest in Indian Springs — the global hub of U.S. Air Force Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) operations. Before you pick a neighborhood, know which base you’re reporting to: the two have very different commute realities. Start your housing research at PCS PLAN and connect with the Nellis–Creech PCS Pay-It-Forward® group for real-time advice from families already here.

Creech’s mission is classified as uniquely high-stakes: the 432nd Wing executes continuous combat operations globally from a desert airstrip 45 miles from Las Vegas. There is no on-base family housing at Creech — families live in Las Vegas and commute, or in the small town of Indian Springs immediately outside the gate. The vast majority choose Las Vegas.

The Commute Question: Nellis vs. Creech

This is the first question you need to answer before choosing a neighborhood. The commute reality at Creech is fundamentally different from Nellis — and your family’s quality of life hinges on making the right housing decision before you arrive.

Working at Nellis AFB

Nellis is accessible from a wide range of Las Vegas metro neighborhoods. Most popular family areas sit 15–30 minutes from the gate in normal traffic. North Las Vegas and nearby suburbs are the shortest commutes; Henderson and Summerlin add time but offer different lifestyle options.

Neighborhood / Area Approx. Commute to Nellis Notes
North Las Vegas (near-base) 10–20 min Closest; abundant new construction; most affordable option near base
Aliante 15–25 min Master-planned community; quiet, suburban; good for families; strong military presence
Centennial Hills 20–30 min Most popular with Nellis families; excellent parks, pools, schools; NW Las Vegas
Skye Canyon / Providence 25–35 min Newer development, community amenities, good schools; growing military community
Summerlin 35–45 min Upscale master-planned community; top-rated schools; higher price point; most private school options
Henderson 35–50 min (freeway) South of Vegas; excellent schools, clean neighborhoods; longer drive to Nellis

Working at Creech AFB

Creech personnel face a genuine commute challenge. The base is in Indian Springs — a small desert town of about 1,100 people with limited services. Most families choose to live in Northwest Las Vegas and commute via US-95. The Centennial Hills, Skye Canyon, and Providence areas are the most popular because they minimize the Las Vegas metro portion of the drive.

Option Commute Time to Creech Honest Assessment
Centennial Hills / Skye Canyon / Providence (NW Las Vegas) 35–50 min each way Most recommended by Creech families; minimizes city driving; quality schools and amenities; best quality-of-life tradeoff
North Las Vegas (near Nellis) 50–70 min each way Cheaper, but the full drive across Las Vegas adds significant time; not preferred
Indian Springs (on-base / adjacent) 5 min Shortest commute by far; very limited services; isolated desert town; most families avoid for families with children
On-base at Nellis (Nellis housing) ~45–60 min each way Some Creech families take Nellis housing; use the base-to-base shuttle (FedVan program — free)

FedVan Shuttle Program: Creech AFB offers a free base-to-base shuttle (operated by FedVan, a veteran-owned company) connecting Las Vegas area park-and-ride locations to Creech. This significantly reduces vehicle wear from the desert commute and fuel costs. Contact the 432nd Mission Support Group Logistics at (702) 404-1731 for current routes and pickup locations. Many Creech families park at a central location and shuttle in, making the Centennial Hills area even more attractive.

Nevada has no state income tax — a meaningful financial advantage over many other duty stations. Combined with competitive BAH rates and Las Vegas’s relatively affordable housing market (compared to coastal bases), your purchasing power here is stronger than the numbers alone suggest. Summerlin Officers; families prioritizing school quality 35–45 min Nellis / 45–60 min Creech Upscale master-planned community; highest-rated schools in Clark County; most private school options; higher home prices
Henderson Families prioritizing schools and outdoor recreation 35–50 min Nellis / 60+ min Creech South of Vegas; nationally recognized as family-friendly; 180+ miles of bike routes; 64 parks; excellent schools; longer commute

Real talk on neighborhoods: The area immediately surrounding Nellis gate is economically depressed — most families live several miles away in planned communities. Don’t choose an address based on proximity to the gate alone. Centennial Hills and Aliante consistently receive the strongest reviews from military families for safety, school quality, and community feel. For Creech families, Centennial Hills, Skye Canyon, and Providence are the go-to choices because they sit at the northern edge of Las Vegas metro — closer to the US-95 corridor that runs to Creech.

The Desert Heat: What Families Need to Know

Las Vegas summers are extreme and require preparation that most incoming families underestimate until they’ve experienced it. June through September brings consistent triple-digit temperatures — 105°F to 115°F+ is normal, not exceptional. The dry heat is more manageable than humid climates, but it demands daily adjustments.

  • Cooling: Central AC is standard in all housing, but power bills in summer run significantly higher than most CONUS bases. Budget $150–$300+ per month for electric from June–September.
  • Cars: Sun shade windshield covers are essential. Interior temperatures in parked cars can reach 160°F. Never leave children or pets in a vehicle.
  • Hydration: Carry water constantly. The dry air means you don’t notice sweat evaporating — dehydration happens fast. Water bottles, cooling towels, and hydration packs are standard gear.
  • Outdoor activities: Morning and evening are the windows for outdoor exercise. Most base events and outdoor recreation shift to evening or early morning from June through September.
  • The payoff: October through May is genuinely spectacular — mild temperatures, clear skies, and comfortable outdoor weather most people only dream about at their duty stations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Nellis AFB and Creech AFB?

They are two separate Air Force installations with different missions, locations, and commute realities. Nellis AFB is 12 miles northeast of Las Vegas — the largest Air Force training installation in the world, home to Red Flag, the Thunderbirds, and the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center. Creech AFB is 45 miles northwest of Las Vegas near Indian Springs — the global hub of U.S. Air Force Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) operations, home to the 432nd Wing and the MQ-9 Reaper and MQ-1 Predator programs. Know which base you’re reporting to before you choose your neighborhood — the commute difference is significant.

What are the 2026 BAH rates for Nellis–Creech?

Both bases share the NELLIS AFB / LAS VEGAS MHA (NV212). BAH decreased 1.9% from 2025, reflecting a softening in the Las Vegas rental market. Key rates: E-5 with dependents $2,070/month; E-6 with dependents $2,208; O-3 with dependents $2,382; O-4 with dependents $2,610; O-5 with dependents $2,775. Service members with dependents receive 17.7% more than those without. Use the DTMO BAH Calculator with ZIP 89191 to confirm your exact rate. Nevada has no state income tax, which meaningfully increases take-home pay.

Where do Creech AFB families typically live?

There is no on-base family housing at Creech AFB. The vast majority of Creech families live in Northwest Las Vegas — Centennial Hills, Skye Canyon, and Providence are the three most recommended neighborhoods because they minimize the Las Vegas metro driving portion of the 45-mile US-95 commute. The FedVan free shuttle program allows personnel to park at designated locations and ride to Creech — contact (702) 404-1731 for current pickup locations. A small number of families live in Indian Springs (adjacent to the gate) for the short commute, but limited services and the remote desert setting make this uncommon for families with children.

How hot does it get in Las Vegas and how do families cope?

Las Vegas summers are extreme. June through September regularly hits 105°F–115°F+. The dry heat is more manageable than humid climates, but it demands preparation: carry water everywhere, invest in quality cooling gear, avoid outdoor activities mid-day from June–September, budget for significantly higher summer power bills ($150–$300+/month for AC), and use windshield sun shades in your car. The trade-off is that October through May offers near-perfect weather — mild days, blue skies, and comfortable evenings that make up for the summer intensity.

What school district serves Nellis–Creech families?

All students attend Clark County School District (CCSD), the largest school district in Nevada and 5th largest in the U.S. School quality varies significantly by zone — Centennial Hills, Aliante, Summerlin, and Henderson are consistently rated strongest. Verify school assignments at the zone level before finalizing your housing address. Contact the School Liaison Officer at (702) 652-1406 for enrollment guidance, magnet program information, and EFMP education coordination. Visit ccsd.net for district details.

What on-base housing is available at Nellis AFB?

On-base family housing is privatized and managed by Hunt Military Communities at (702) 677-3660. Communities feature ranch-style single-family homes and gated duplexes with washer/dryer hookups, AC, and pet-friendly policies. All family housing (3+ bedrooms) is on Hospital Side. Nellis Terrace serves E1–E6 with 2–4 bedroom homes ranging from 950–1,400+ sq ft. Senior enlisted and officers have separate communities. Contact the Housing Management Office at (702) 652-1840 immediately when orders arrive — do not wait until in-processing. There is no on-base family housing at Creech AFB.

What medical care is available at Nellis–Creech?

Mike O’Callaghan Military Medical Center (MOMMC) serves both installations from Nellis Hospital Side at 4700 Las Vegas Blvd N. Phone: (702) 653-2777. Website: nellis.tricare.mil. Hours: Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri 0700–1630; Wed 0930–1630 (training day). Services include family health, internal medicine, pediatrics, mental health, dental, flight medicine, and emergency care. A satellite pharmacy on Main Side is open weekdays. Creech AFB has a smaller on-site medical and dental clinic for personnel assigned there. A VA hospital is located approximately 5 miles from Nellis AFB. Enroll in TRICARE at tricare.mil before arriving.

Is Las Vegas a good duty station for families?

Yes — consistently rated among the most requested Air Force assignments for a reason. The stereotype of “crazy Vegas life” fades quickly once you’re living 15–20 minutes from the Strip in a quiet suburban neighborhood. Families love the outdoor access (Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead, Mount Charleston are all within an hour), affordable flights for visiting family, year-round entertainment options when you want them, and a climate that’s genuinely beautiful outside of summer. The military community is large and well-connected. Most families who serve here request a return assignment.

What outdoor activities are near Nellis–Creech?

The Las Vegas area is one of the most outdoor recreation-rich bases in the country. Red Rock Canyon is 20 minutes from Nellis — world-class hiking and climbing. Lake Mead National Recreation Area is 30 minutes — boating, fishing, camping. Spring Mountains / Mount Charleston offers pine forests and skiing less than an hour away. Zion National Park in Utah is 2.5 hours north. The Grand Canyon South Rim is 4 hours. Death Valley (visit only October–March) is 2 hours. MWR provides gear rentals and group trips to most of these destinations throughout the year.
