TL;DR: Mountain Home AFB is home to the 366th Fighter Wing “Gunfighters” and sits in the high desert of southwestern Idaho, about 50 miles from Boise. This guide covers 2026 BAH rates, on-base housing neighborhoods, off-base options, schools, medical, gate hours, and what life actually looks like when you land here.
If your orders say Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, you’ve probably already heard the jokes about desert and tumbleweeds. Here’s what the jokes don’t tell you: this base has one of the tightest-knit military communities in the Air Force, some of the most affordable housing in the country, and access to world-class outdoor recreation that most duty stations can’t touch. Yes, it’s remote. That’s also exactly why families who’ve been here tend to love it.
This guide gives you everything you need to plan your PCS — from 2026 BAH rates and on-base housing neighborhoods to schools, medical access, gate hours, and what life in southern Idaho actually looks like day to day.

Mountain Home AFB is home to the 366th Fighter Wing, nicknamed the “Gunfighters,” which falls under Air Combat Command (ACC). The wing operates two fighter squadrons flying the F-15E Strike Eagle — the 389th Fighter Squadron and the 391st Fighter Squadron — both delivering precision strike and air superiority capability worldwide.
Additionally, the base hosts the 428th Fighter Squadron, a unique tenant unit made up of Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) personnel flying the F-15SG. This international training partnership makes Mountain Home one of the more operationally diverse bases in the Air Force. Joint exercises, international crews, and high-ops tempo are all part of daily life here.
The base also runs Gunfighter Flag, a recurring large-scale combat training exercise hosted by the 366th FW. If you arrive during a Gunfighter Flag rotation, expect high activity on and around the flightline.

The base sits on more than 7,500 square miles of high desert range — which is why the flying mission here is so demanding and why aircrew who train at Mountain Home are considered exceptionally well-prepared.
Mountain Home AFB falls under Military Housing Area (MHA) ID086, which covers ZIP code 83648 and surrounding Elmore County ZIPs. For 2026, BAH rates at Mountain Home decreased 5.1% from 2025 — one of a handful of installations where housing costs fell enough to move the rate down. Rate protection applies if you’re already stationed here and maintaining the same rank and dependency status.
The 2026 Mountain Home BAH is ranked 37th highest out of all Air Force bases, which puts it on the lower end compared to coastal installations. The upside: housing is genuinely affordable here. In most cases, your BAH will cover rent and utilities with room to spare, especially in the town of Mountain Home.
Selected 2026 BAH rates (Mountain Home AFB, MHA ID086):
| Pay Grade | With Dependents | Without Dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-4 | ~$1,608/mo | ~$1,287/mo |

Verify your exact rate using the official DTMO BAH calculator with your pay grade, dependency status, and ZIP 83648.
With dependents receive approximately 25% more BAH than without dependents at this location. For more context on how BAH works across all installations, see our 2026 BAH rates guide.
On-base family housing at Mountain Home AFB is managed by Hunt Military Communities. The installation offers more than 800 family housing units across several neighborhoods, sized for various ranks and family configurations. Each unit comes equipped with a refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher. Most neighborhoods include playgrounds, covered pavilions, and laundry access.
To apply, complete a DD Form 1746 (Application for Assignment for Housing) along with a copy of your orders. Waitlist times vary depending on family size and rank — the Housing Office can give you current wait estimates.

Unaccompanied Housing (UH) is provided for Airmen in the grades of E-1 through E-3 and E-4 with fewer than 3 years of service. The permanent party UH campus offers 599 bed spaces across five dormitories — two in “1+1 Corridor” style (two rooms share a kitchen and bathroom) and four in “2+2 Corridor” style (two rooms share a bathroom). Amenities include game rooms, TV rooms, and Wi-Fi.
The Sagebrush Inn is Mountain Home AFB’s primary temporary lodging facility, with more than 100 units available. TLF (Temporary Lodging Facility) units include kitchenettes, laundry access, and playground access — designed for PCSing families on extended stays. Pet-friendly rooms are available but limited, so request early and confirm your documentation requirements.
Book TLF early, especially during peak PCS season. If the inn is full, the base will coordinate with nearby hotels in Mountain Home or Boise.
The local housing market is one of the most affordable near any Air Force base in the country. The Mountain Home metro area’s cost of living runs 8.7% lower than the U.S. average, and in most off-base ZIPs, your BAH will cover rent and utilities without out-of-pocket expense.
The most popular off-base option for families, the city of Mountain Home sits just 12 miles east of the base on I-84. With a population of about 11,000, it’s a small, military-friendly town where military families make up a significant portion of the community. You’ll find most of your everyday needs here — grocery stores, schools, restaurants, and services — without a long commute.
Current off-base rents in Mountain Home (per AHRN, 2026):
| Unit size | Typical monthly rent |
|---|---|
| 1-bedroom | ~$650–$700/mo |
| 2-bedroom | ~$700–$1,100/mo |
| 3-bedroom | ~$1,900/mo |
| 4-bedroom | ~$2,300/mo |
For most ranks with dependents, a 3BR or 4BR in Mountain Home falls well within BAH range. Housing inventory is modest, however — listings move fast. Check AHRN.com for current rentals and homes for sale near the base.
Some families — particularly those with working spouses or a preference for more urban amenities — choose to live in the Boise metro area, roughly 45–55 miles northwest of the base. Communities like Kuna (~30 miles), Nampa, and Meridian offer newer construction, strong schools, and access to Boise’s restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. The tradeoff is the commute, which can run 45–60 minutes each way depending on traffic and gate access.
Boise falls under a different MHA (Boise, ID MHA), and BAH is typically higher for Boise ZIPs than for Mountain Home ZIPs. If your BAH is calculated at the Boise rate (which can happen depending on your orders), living in the Boise area may be financially feasible. Verify your assigned MHA with the Housing Office before committing to a lease far from base.
If you’re considering buying in the Boise area, your VA Home Loan is a powerful tool — no down payment, no PMI, and competitive rates. Idaho has no real estate transfer tax, which reduces closing costs compared to many states.
Smaller communities like Glenns Ferry (~35 miles east) and Grand View (~30 miles south) offer even more affordable housing but require a longer commute and have fewer services.
Most school-age children at Mountain Home AFB attend school in the Mountain Home School District. This is a civilian public school district, not a DoDEA school — which sometimes surprises incoming families. Schools are small and close-knit, which many military families end up appreciating.
Mountain Home AFB Primary School (K–4) is located on base and managed by the Mountain Home School District. This is the most convenient option for families living in base housing.
| School level | School(s) |
|---|---|
| Primary/Elementary (K–4) | Mountain Home AFB Primary (on base) + 3 elementary schools in town |
| Middle School (5–7) | 1 middle school in Mountain Home |
| Junior High (8–9) | 1 junior high school in Mountain Home |
| High School (10–12) | Mountain Home High School |
Bus service is provided to students living more than 1.5 miles from their school. For school enrollment information, required documents, and registration assistance, contact:
Mountain Home School District:
– Phone: (208) 587-2580
The School Liaison Officer (SLO) on base can also help with enrollment, records transfer, and connecting your family to the right school before you arrive. Additionally, children living off base in Boise-area communities may fall under different school districts (West Ada, Nampa, Kuna Unified) — confirm your school district boundary based on your specific address.

One of Mountain Home AFB’s best-kept secrets is what you can do on the weekends. The 366th Force Support Squadron (FSS) operates a strong suite of MWR facilities, and the surrounding high desert puts some genuinely spectacular outdoor recreation within easy reach.
The 366th FSS operates the following facilities on base:
The Outdoor Adventure Program is particularly well-regarded and takes full advantage of Idaho’s geography. Programs and trips include:
Idaho’s outdoor landscape makes Mountain Home one of the most outdoors-friendly duty stations in the Air Force. Within a 1–3 hour drive you have access to:
Families who arrive at Mountain Home skeptical often leave having built some of their best outdoor memories. The isolation that initially feels like a downside frequently becomes the base’s greatest appeal.
Mountain Home’s remote location does present real challenges for spouse employment. The Mountain Home job market is limited — most employment near the base is concentrated in retail, healthcare, education, and government contracting. Boise offers considerably more opportunity for spouses in technology, healthcare, higher education, finance, and remote work.

Mountain Home is a small, affordable military town about 12 miles from the base. Cost of living is roughly 8.7% below the national average, and BAH typically covers rent in most ZIP codes. The biggest adjustment for most families is the remoteness — Boise is about 50 miles away. However, the outdoor recreation access (rafting, skiing, hiking, national parks) is exceptional, and the tight-knit community on base is consistently cited as one of the best things about a Mountain Home assignment.
Mountain Home AFB is approximately 50 miles southeast of downtown Boise, roughly a 45–60 minute drive depending on traffic. Some families choose to live in Boise-area communities like Kuna or Meridian and commute, though this is a personal choice based on family needs and the cost difference in housing. Many families prefer to live in Mountain Home for the shorter commute and lower cost.
