PCS Pay-it-Forward

Your Complete PCS Guide to Eglin Air Force Base

TL;DR: If you have orders to Eglin AFB, this guide covers gate hours, housing, schools, medical care, and the neighborhoods military families actually choose on the Emerald Coast. Start your free PCS Plan© to get a personalized roadmap built around your rank, your family size, and your report date.

Eglin is the largest Air Force installation in the world by land area, and that single fact shapes almost every decision you are about to make. Your work center could sit 25 minutes from the gate you drive through, so where you live depends on where you actually report. Housing inventory in Okaloosa County moves fast, tourist season reshapes your commute, and the on-base child care waitlist fills before most families arrive. Families who handle this assignment well start planning before the truck is packed, which is exactly what our free PCS Plan© is built for. Meanwhile, the Eglin PCS Pay It Forward® group gives you real-time answers from families already stationed here.

Eglin AFB Installation Overview

Eglin AFB sits in Okaloosa County, Florida, just southwest of Valparaiso. The reservation covers roughly 724 square miles of land and water test ranges across the western Panhandle. Because of that footprint, Eglin functions less like a single base and more like a small county with a flight line.

The 96th Test Wing serves as the host unit. Additionally, the installation supports the 33rd Fighter Wing, which trains F-35A pilots and maintainers, along with the 53rd Wing, the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing, and the Air Force Research Laboratory Munitions Directorate. Notably, Eglin is a joint assignment in practice. The Army’s 7th Special Forces Group and 6th Ranger Training Battalion are based here, and the Navy runs its Explosive Ordnance Disposal school on the installation. Full unit and mission details live on the official Eglin AFB website.

Eglin and Hurlburt Field are not the same installation

Hurlburt Field is a separate installation about seven miles west along US-98, and it is home to Air Force Special Operations Command. Your gate, your housing office, and your daily commute all change depending on which one you report to. This guide covers Eglin only. For a statewide picture of every Florida installation, see our Florida military bases guide.

BAH and Cost of Living at Eglin AFB

Eglin falls in the Fort Walton Beach Military Housing Area, MHA code FL023, which also covers Hurlburt Field and Duke Field. Use ZIP code 32542 when you look up your rate. FL023 runs higher than the Pensacola MHA next door, because Destin and Fort Walton Beach pricing pull the whole area up.

Currently, monthly BAH in this MHA ranges from roughly $2,000 at the junior enlisted end to roughly $3,600 for senior officers, depending on your pay grade and dependency status. Rather than guess, run your exact number through our BAH calculator or the official DoD BAH rate lookup. For how the allowance is calculated and why it changes, our BAH rates guide breaks it down.

Last verified: August 2026. BAH rates change every January.

What your allowance realistically covers here

The Military Housing Office reports one and two-bedroom apartments in the surrounding communities generally renting between $1,300 and $1,900 per month. Three and four-bedroom homes, duplexes, and townhomes typically run $1,800 to $2,700. Most local landlords want a seven to twelve month lease, and pet deposits in this market range widely.

Florida charges no state income tax, so your base pay stretches further than it would in a high-tax state. However, two local costs eat into that advantage. Homeowner’s insurance on the Gulf Coast runs well above the national average, and summer electric bills are steep. Budget for both before you sign anything.

Neighborhoods Near Eglin AFB

Where you live here is really a question of which gate you use. West Gate traffic comes up FL-85 from Fort Walton Beach and Shalimar. East Gate traffic comes in from Valparaiso and Niceville on FL-397. Pick your community after you know which side of the reservation your unit sits on.

Niceville

Niceville is the default answer for families with school-age kids, and for good reason. It sits 5 to 10 minutes from the East Gate, feeds the top-rated schools in Okaloosa County, and holds a deep military community. Home prices reflect all of that. Renters often find inventory tight, so start looking early.

Valparaiso

Valparaiso wraps around the East Gate and delivers the shortest commute on this list, frequently under 10 minutes. Additionally, it runs more affordable than Niceville while feeding the same district. Junior enlisted families and anyone who hates driving should look here first.

Shalimar

Shalimar is small, quiet, and convenient to the West Gate at roughly 5 to 15 minutes. Housing skews older and more affordable than Niceville. For families who want a short commute without a beach-town price tag, it is an easy fit.

Fort Walton Beach

Fort Walton Beach offers the most rental variety in the area, plus the most dining and shopping. Commutes to the West Gate typically run 10 to 20 minutes. Keep in mind that US-98 clogs badly from spring break through Labor Day, and a summer Friday afternoon will test your patience.

Crestview

Crestview sits north of the reservation and gives you the most house for your money. The trade is the drive — plan on 30 to 45 minutes to the West Gate, longer during peak flow. Many families accept that math, especially larger households buying rather than renting.

Destin

Destin is genuinely beautiful and genuinely expensive. Expect 25 to 45 minutes to the West Gate, with summer traffic pushing the high end. Consequently, it works best for senior officers, dual-income families, and households without school-age children.

Stuck between two of these communities? Start your free PCS Plan© and we will connect you with an ambassador who lives here and knows both. You can also ask the Eglin PCS Pay It Forward® group what a specific street actually feels like day to day.

On-Base Housing at Eglin AFB

Privatized family housing

Mayroad owns and manages family housing at Eglin. Leasing sits at 2950 Azalea Drive, Building 38499, and the office runs Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Call (850) 613-5050 to start, or email Eglin.Leasing@themayroad.com. Emergency maintenance runs on a separate line at (850) 613-5051. Floor plans and community details live on the Mayroad website.

Before you sign anything, contact the Military Housing Office at (850) 882-4533, extension 3. Additionally, email a copy of your hard orders to 96ceg.cemh@us.af.mil to start the referral process. Homes on base are not individually metered right now, so utility costs are included in rent up to your BAH. Full policy detail sits on the Air Force Housing page for Eglin.

Waitlist reality: wait times swing by bedroom count, rank, and time of year. Apply the day your orders are firm rather than the week you arrive. Also, document every room with photos and video at move-in, and file an ICE comment early if a work order stalls.

Unaccompanied housing

Dorms are mandatory for E-1 through E-3, plus E-4s with under three years of service. Eglin offers 238 one-plus-one suites and 528 Dorms-4-Airmen units. Reach the Unaccompanied Housing office at (850) 882-5153, located at 212 Daytona Road, Building 822.

Renting or buying off base

Roughly speaking, most Eglin families end up off base, and many buy rather than rent because tours here often run long. Your VA home loan benefit means no down payment and no PMI, which matters in a market with limited developable land. For BAH-by-pay-grade math, market data, and gate-by-gate commute detail, read our buying a home near Eglin AFB guide.

Temporary Lodging at Eglin AFB

Eglin Inns handles temporary lodging, with the reception center near the Bayside Inn at 1008 Boatner Road, Building 11001. Reservations run through (850) 882-8761 or Air Force Inns online booking. The reception center staffs 24 hours, which helps when a drive across the Panhandle runs long.

Rooms include a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, and wireless internet, and both lodging areas have 24-hour fitness centers. When on-base rooms fill, Eglin Inns partners with several local hotels at negotiated rates. Ask about that option instead of booking blind.

Book the moment orders drop. PCS season here runs May through August, and it overlaps with peak beach tourism. Rooms and off-base rates both tighten at exactly the same time. Rates are set annually and are subject to change, so confirm when you reserve.

Schools and Child Care Near Eglin AFB

Every student near Eglin attends Okaloosa County School District schools. No DoDEA schools operate here. Okaloosa consistently ranks among Florida’s stronger districts, which is one of the real perks of this assignment.

Which schools serve on-base housing

Grades School Location Phone
Pre-K through 4 Eglin Elementary School 200 Gaffney Road, Eglin AFB (850) 833-4320
5 through 8 Addie R. Lewis School 281 Mississippi Avenue, Valparaiso (850) 833-4130
9 through 12 Niceville High School 800 E. John C. Sims Parkway, Niceville (850) 833-4114

Last verified: August 2026. Attendance zones change — confirm with the district before you lease or buy.

Magnet and choice options

Okaloosa STEMM Academy in Valparaiso is the standout choice program in the county, serving grades K through 8. Applications are competitive and deadlines land early, so submit before you arrive rather than after. Similarly, Niceville High draws families specifically for its academics, athletics, and JROTC program.

The Eglin School Liaison Office answers zoning, records, and Interstate Compact questions. Reach that office at (850) 882-4319, located in Building 2579, Suite 6, at 2549 Gaffney Road. Contact them before you choose a neighborhood, not after.

Child care and youth programs

On-base child care demand outruns supply here, as it does at most installations. Submit your request at MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders, because your request date drives your place in line. For Family Child Care homes, call (850) 882-2994 at Building 2579.

Two programs are worth knowing about. First, the Air and Space Forces Aid Society funds Child Care for PCS at $200 per child up to age 12, capped at $1,000 per family. Second, if care is unavailable within 30 days of your date needed, you may qualify for reimbursement of a caregiver’s travel costs, up to $500 for a CONUS move. Summer coverage is its own puzzle, so our summer camps for military kids guide is worth a look before June.

In-Processing and Gate Hours at Eglin AFB

Gate hours

Gate Access from Hours
West Gate FL-85 / Eglin Parkway, Fort Walton Beach side 24/7
East Gate FL-397, Valparaiso side 24/7
North Gate North side of the installation Mon–Fri, 6:00–8:00 a.m. and 4:00–6:00 p.m.
ACC Gate ACC area access Mon–Fri, 6:00–8:00 a.m. and 4:00–6:00 p.m.

Last verified: August 2026. Gate hours change with mission requirements and holidays.

Visitor passes and the Visitor Control Center

The Visitor Control Center operates out of Building 2938 at the Air Force Armament Museum, 100 Museum Drive. Hours run Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and weekends 8:00 a.m. to noon. Outside those windows, Security Forces at the East and West gates can help sponsors get a guest on base, though that exception excludes contractors and foreign nationals.

Sponsors can request passes in advance through the online visitor request system, no earlier than five days out. Furthermore, the VCC runs a virtual queue, so you can check in remotely and then report within 60 minutes. Requests for foreign national visitors take up to 14 days, so plan well ahead. Call pass and registration at (850) 883-0948 or (850) 882-6349, and review current requirements on the official Eglin VCC page.

One practical note for move day: if your movers or a rental truck need base access, have your sponsor confirm the correct gate and any escort requirement before the truck rolls. Large vehicles do not enter through every gate.

Your first stops on arrival

Report first to your unit Commander Support Staff, which processes every gain action for your arrival. If your unit has no CSS, call the Military Personnel Flight at (850) 882-6331 or (850) 882-2742. Newcomer’s Orientation runs the first Wednesday of each month at the Eglin Enlisted Hall, 1760 Memorial Trail, and spouses are welcome. Register through your CSS or the Military and Family Readiness Center at (850) 882-9060.

Your sponsor should be assigned within 90 days of your report date. Request one early if nobody has contacted you. For travel voucher and household goods questions, the Traffic Management Office answers at (850) 882-2127. Keep every receipt and every set of orders in one place — our PCS binder and checklist lays out exactly what to file where.

Medical Care at Eglin AFB

The 96th Medical Group runs a full hospital at 307 Boatner Road, Suite 114. Services include family health, internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, dental, pharmacy, behavioral health, and a long list of specialty clinics. Inpatient care, surgery, and a critical care unit all operate on site, which is unusual for an Air Force installation this size.

Key numbers and hours

Service Phone Hours
Appointments (schedule, cancel, reschedule) (850) 883-8600 Mon–Fri, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Emergency Department (850) 883-8227 24/7
Referral Management Center (850) 883-9174 Mon–Fri, duty hours
Nurse Advice Line (after hours) (800) 874-2273, option 1 24/7

Last verified: August 2026. Clinics close for readiness training and family days.

Yes, Eglin has its own emergency room, and it runs around the clock. Still, dial 911 first in a true emergency, because ambulance transport gets you the fastest care. Florida sits in the TRICARE East region, administered by Humana Military, so update your enrollment before you arrive rather than after. Clinic details and closure notices post on the 96th Medical Group website.

Honest note: this hospital serves roughly 92,000 eligible beneficiaries, and routine appointments can book out. Establish care with a primary care manager during your first two weeks. Families with EFMP enrollment should contact the EFMP office before the move, since specialty availability drives assignment coordination.

Getting to Eglin AFB

Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport, code VPS, sits on Eglin property at 1701 State Road 85 North. Uniquely, you do not need a base pass to use it. The civilian terminal has its own access road, its own security, and rental car counters inside the building.

American, Delta, United, Southwest, and Allegiant all serve VPS, with nonstop routes to Atlanta, Dallas, Nashville, and other hubs. From the terminal you are roughly 10 miles from Fort Walton Beach and about 16 miles from Destin. Check current schedules at flyvps.com before booking.

Driving in, most families come off I-10 and head south on FL-85 through Crestview, which lands you at the West Gate side. Coming from the east, US-98 runs the coast through Destin and Fort Walton Beach. Rideshare exists here but thins out at odd hours, so rent a car if your household vehicle is still on a truck.

Things to Do Near Eglin AFB

Beaches and the outdoors

The Emerald Coast earns its name, and beach access is plentiful and mostly free. Beyond the public beaches, Eglin’s reservation opens huge tracts of land and shoreline to recreation. Anyone 16 or older needs a permit, and permits run through the Eglin iSportsman system. Notably, the Eglin Public Beach Permit costs nothing and unlocks stretches of gulf beach most tourists never find.

Hiking, freshwater fishing, hunting, kayaking, and camping all happen on the reservation. Call the Natural Resources Office, known locally as Jackson Guard, at (850) 882-4165 with questions about which permit covers what. Buy the right one before you go, because rangers do check.

Family outings

The Air Force Armament Museum sits outside the gates at 100 Museum Drive, and admission is free with no base access required. Indoor galleries open daily, while the outdoor airpark stays open dawn to dusk. It is the easiest first weekend outing for a family that just rolled into town.

Additionally, the Okaloosa Island Boardwalk, the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, and HarborWalk Village in Destin all run family-friendly and offer military discounts in many cases. On base, MWR operates a golf course, bowling center, fitness centers, and an RV and camping area. Ask the recreation office about discounted attraction tickets before you pay full price anywhere.

PCS Tips for Eglin AFB

Ask exactly where your work center sits. Eglin is enormous, and an on-base drive can take 20 to 30 minutes by itself. Your sponsor can tell you which gate you will actually use. That one answer narrows your neighborhood search faster than any listing site.

Get on two waitlists the same week. Call Mayroad and submit your child care request at MilitaryChildCare.com on the same day. Both queues run on request date, and waiting costs you position rather than money.

Buy hurricane coverage before June 1. Season runs June through November here, and many policies carry waiting periods before coverage starts. Renters need contents coverage too. Register with the installation’s emergency notification system during your first week, and ask your unit what shelter-in-place versus evacuation looks like for your job.

Do not plan a move-in during peak beach season if you can avoid it. July traffic on US-98 is not a rumor. If your report date is fixed, plan errands for early morning and keep your tank above half.

Decide early whether you are renting or buying. A PPM can free up cash for a down payment, and our DITY and PPM move guide walks through how that works. Whichever way you lean, start your free PCS Plan© and we will build the timeline around your actual dates.

Eglin AFB PCS FAQs

What ZIP code do I use for BAH at Eglin AFB?

Use 32542. Eglin falls in the Fort Walton Beach Military Housing Area, MHA code FL023, which also covers Hurlburt Field and Duke Field. Your BAH follows your duty station rather than your home address, so living in a neighboring county does not change your rate.

Which gates at Eglin AFB are open 24 hours?

The West Gate and the East Gate both operate 24/7. West Gate access comes off FL-85 on the Fort Walton Beach side, and East Gate access comes off FL-397 on the Valparaiso side. The North Gate and ACC Gate open only Monday through Friday, 6:00 to 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

How do I get a visitor pass for Eglin AFB?

Visit the Visitor Control Center in Building 2938 at the Air Force Armament Museum, 100 Museum Drive. Hours run Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and weekends 8:00 a.m. to noon. Sponsors can also submit requests online up to five days in advance, and Security Forces at the East and West gates assist after hours. Requests for foreign national visitors take up to 14 days.

Who manages on-base housing at Eglin AFB?

Mayroad owns and manages privatized family housing at Eglin. Reach leasing at (850) 613-5050 or Eglin.Leasing@themayroad.com, at 2950 Azalea Drive, Building 38499. Contact the Military Housing Office at (850) 882-4533, extension 3, before signing any lease on or off base.

How long is the housing waitlist at Eglin AFB?

Wait times vary by rank, bedroom count, and season, and they can stretch from a few months to much longer. Your position depends on your application date, so apply as soon as your orders are firm. Email your hard orders to 96ceg.cemh@us.af.mil to start the referral process.

Where do families stay temporarily during a PCS to Eglin?

Eglin Inns handles temporary lodging, with the 24-hour reception center near the Bayside Inn at 1008 Boatner Road, Building 11001. Call (850) 882-8761 to reserve. Rooms fill quickly from May through August, and Eglin Inns partners with off-base hotels when on-base rooms run out.

What school district serves Eglin AFB?

Okaloosa County School District serves every family at Eglin, and no DoDEA schools operate here. Students living in base housing attend Eglin Elementary for pre-K through fourth grade, Addie R. Lewis School for fifth through eighth, and Niceville High School for ninth through twelfth. Call the School Liaison Office at (850) 882-4319 to confirm current zoning.

Does Eglin AFB have an emergency room?

Yes. The 96th Medical Group operates a 24/7 emergency department at 307 Boatner Road, reachable at (850) 883-8227. Call 911 first in a true emergency. For non-urgent issues after hours, use the Nurse Advice Line at (800) 874-2273, option 1.

What is my first stop when I in-process at Eglin AFB?

Report to your unit Commander Support Staff first, since that office handles all gain actions. Units without a CSS should direct members to the Military Personnel Flight at (850) 882-6331. Newcomer’s Orientation runs the first Wednesday of each month at the Eglin Enlisted Hall, and registration goes through your CSS or the Military and Family Readiness Center at (850) 882-9060.

Which airport do I fly into for Eglin AFB?

Fly into Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport, code VPS, which sits on Eglin property at 1701 State Road 85 North. You do not need a base pass, because the civilian terminal has separate access. Rental cars are available inside the terminal, and the airport is about 10 miles from Fort Walton Beach.

How long is the commute from Niceville to Eglin AFB?

Niceville to the East Gate typically runs 5 to 10 minutes. Valparaiso is usually under 10 minutes, Fort Walton Beach runs 10 to 20 minutes to the West Gate, and Crestview runs 30 to 45 minutes. Remember that your drive continues once you are on base, since work centers can sit 20 to 30 minutes inside the gate.

Do I need a permit to use Eglin’s recreation areas and beaches?

Yes. Anyone 16 or older needs an Eglin recreation permit plus photo identification while on the reservation. Permits are issued through the Eglin iSportsman system, and the Eglin Public Beach Permit is free. Call Jackson Guard at (850) 882-4165 if you are unsure which permit covers your activity.
