Naval Base Coronado: PCS Guide

TL;DR: If you have orders to Naval Base Coronado, this guide covers BAH context, on-base and off-base housing, the Coronado Unified School District, gate hours for NAS North Island and NAB Coronado, the Navy Lodge, medical care at Balboa, and what your family actually needs to land here without the chaos. Start your free PCS Plan™ to get a personalized roadmap built around your rank, your family size, and your timeline in one of the Navy’s most expensive — and most rewarding — duty stations.

Naval Base Coronado is one of the most coveted Navy assignments in the country, and also one of the trickiest to land at without serious planning. The base itself is a consortium of eight installations stretched across more than 57,000 acres of San Diego County, anchored by NAS North Island on the north end of the Coronado peninsula and Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Coronado on the south end. Together they support over 100 tenant commands — carrier aviation, helicopter squadrons, Naval Special Warfare, and amphibious training — which means the daily reality of “PCSing to Coronado” looks very different depending on which command you’re checking into. The hardest part of this move is not the base — it’s the housing market around it. Furthermore, the families who navigate San Diego well almost always start with a plan, and our free PCS Plan™ walks you through every decision point — gate access, neighborhood selection, school enrollment, and the Liberty Military Housing waitlist — before you sign a single lease.

Naval Base Coronado: Installation Overview

Naval Base Coronado (NBC) is the consolidated Navy installation that incorporates eight separate facilities under one Commanding Officer, established in 1997 to streamline operations across Southern California. The eight components include NAS North Island (NASNI), Naval Amphibious Base Coronado (NAB), Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach, Naval Auxiliary Landing Field San Clemente Island, Silver Strand Training Complex, Mountain Warfare Training Camp Michael Monsoor, Camp Morena, and the Remote Training Site at Warner Springs. Together they employ roughly 36,000 military and civilian personnel — the largest workforce in San Diego County.

For most incoming families, “Coronado” means one of two places: NAS North Island or NAB Coronado. NAS North Island is the home of carrier aviation on the West Coast, with multiple aircraft carriers homeported there along with most of the Pacific Fleet’s helicopter squadrons. Furthermore, it hosts the headquarters for Commander, Naval Air Forces. NAB Coronado, located five miles south on the same peninsula, is the West Coast hub for special and expeditionary warfare — including Naval Special Warfare Command, BUD/S training, and Special Boat Teams. Both installations sit in the city of Coronado (population roughly 25,000), connected to mainland San Diego by the 1.5-mile Coronado Bridge or by the Silver Strand running south to Imperial Beach.

For a wider view of California installations and how Coronado fits into the Pacific Fleet picture, see our California military installation guide.

BAH and Cost of Living at Naval Base Coronado

Naval Base Coronado falls under the San Diego County Military Housing Area (MHA) — the same MHA that covers Naval Base San Diego, MCAS Miramar, and MCRD San Diego. As a result, your BAH rate is among the highest in the entire Navy. However, San Diego BAH is also notorious for not stretching as far as the dollar amount suggests, because the local housing market is one of the most expensive in the country.

For 2026, the San Diego MHA BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents is $3,987 per month, ranking among the top three Navy installations nationwide. Officer rates climb significantly higher, and senior enlisted (E-7 through E-9) and O-3 with dependents typically land in a range that makes off-base rent in family-friendly neighborhoods workable, though rarely effortless. Junior enlisted families (E-1 through E-4) face the tightest math; many move into Liberty Military Housing communities to make BAH work as effectively as possible.

To run your exact BAH by rank and ZIP code, use the BAH Calculator or the DoD BAH Calculator at travel.dod.mil. For the full 2026 rate breakdown by pay grade nationwide, see our 2026 BAH rates guide. Last verified: April 2026.

Real talk on cost of living: Coronado itself is a vacation town. The average home value on the island sits well above $1.8 million, and three-bedroom rentals often start north of $5,000 per month — so most enlisted and many junior officer families do not live on the island. As a result, families typically choose between three options: get on the on-base housing waitlist (which can run from several months to several years), rent off the island in neighborhoods like Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, or Eastlake, or use their VA home loan benefit to buy in a market where rent is unlikely to drop. Want to see exactly what your BAH buys near Naval Base Coronado at current rates? Your free VA Home Loan Snapshot runs the numbers — no credit pull, takes 60 seconds.

Neighborhoods Near Naval Base Coronado

Where you live near Naval Base Coronado depends almost entirely on which gate you’re using, your BAH, your school priorities, and how much commute time you can tolerate. Below are the five communities military families actually choose most often.

Coronado (the island itself)

Best for: O-4 and above, or families willing to trade space and price for an unbeatable commute.

Coronado is walkable, family-friendly, and home to one of the strongest small school districts in California — Coronado Unified has a 41% military student population and a dedicated School Liaison Officer. However, the price tag is real. Most enlisted BAH does not cover the median Coronado rent without supplementing out of pocket. Families who land here typically rent older homes, condos, or duplexes rather than the iconic homes seen in tourism photos.

Imperial Beach

Best for: Families wanting beach living at a price closer to BAH, especially those checking into NAB Coronado.

  • Median rent: typically $2,800–$4,200 for a 3BR
  • Commute: 10–20 minutes to NAB Coronado via the Silver Strand; 25–40 minutes to NASNI
  • School district: South Bay Union and Sweetwater Union High School District

Imperial Beach is the closest off-base community to NAB Coronado and offers a small-town beach feel without the Coronado price tag. Notably, it is the West Coast’s southernmost beach city. The trade-off is school ratings vary widely by neighborhood, so research individual schools before committing to a lease.

Chula Vista and Eastlake

Best for: Families prioritizing newer construction, larger homes, and stronger schools within BAH range.

  • Median rent: typically $3,200–$4,800 for a 3BR
  • Commute: 25–40 minutes to NASNI; 20–35 minutes to NAB
  • School district: Chula Vista Elementary (with two dedicated Navy School Liaisons) and Sweetwater Union High

Chula Vista — particularly the Eastlake and Otay Ranch areas — is one of the most popular off-base choices for Naval Base Coronado families. You will get more square footage, newer construction, and solid schools (typically 7–8/10 ratings) at rents that fit most BAH. The downside is the commute, especially during morning rush over the Coronado Bridge.

Point Loma and Liberty Station

Best for: Single sailors and families who want urban San Diego living with quick base access.

  • Median rent: typically $2,800–$5,200 for a 2–3BR
  • Commute: 15–25 minutes to NASNI via the Coronado Bridge
  • School district: San Diego Unified School District

Point Loma offers waterfront views, a strong military presence, and fast access to NASNI without crossing the bridge from the south. Liberty Station — a former Naval Training Center — has been redeveloped into a walkable mixed-use community with restaurants, parks, and the Liberty Public Market. As a result, Point Loma tends to fit O-2 through O-4 budgets well.

National City and South Bay

Best for: Junior enlisted families looking for shorter commutes and lower rent than Chula Vista.

  • Median rent: typically $2,400–$3,400 for a 3BR
  • Commute: 20–35 minutes to NASNI; 20–30 minutes to NAB
  • School district: National School District (elementary) and Sweetwater Union High

National City sits between Naval Base San Diego and Naval Base Coronado, making it a practical choice for sailors with cross-base assignments. Rents are noticeably lower than Eastlake or Coronado. However, school ratings vary significantly between neighborhoods, so you’ll want to look at specific addresses rather than the city as a whole.

On-Base Housing at Naval Base Coronado

On-base housing at Naval Base Coronado is managed by Liberty Military Housing (formerly Lincoln Military Housing). However, “on-base” is misleading — Liberty manages roughly 9,000 military homes spread across 48 communities throughout San Diego County, not just on the Coronado peninsula. The on-island communities are extremely limited and waitlisted heavily; most families end up in Liberty’s mainland communities like Murphy Canyon, Admiral Hartman, Bayview Hills, or the South Bay communities.

On-base housing waitlist

This is the single most important thing to know: Coronado on-island housing waitlists can run from several months to 50 months or more for some communities, with some listed as “indefinite.” Mainland Liberty communities move faster, typically 6–18 months. Apply the moment you have your orders — Liberty allows advanced applications. Contact the CNRSW Military Family Housing Welcome Center at (619) 556-8443 to start your application and confirm your waitlist position.

Unaccompanied housing (BEQ/BOQ)

Single sailors E-1 through E-4 (and some E-5s) are typically assigned to unaccompanied housing at NAS North Island. The North Island BEQ is at Building 1500 on Rogers Road, (619) 545-7545. The North Island BOQ is on Quentin Roosevelt Boulevard, (619) 545-7545. NAB Coronado also has unaccompanied housing on Tulagi Road, (619) 437-3860. Linens are provided at check-in, and utilities and laundry are included.

For a deeper read on the off-base buying decision once you’re settled, see our VA home loan guide.

Temporary Lodging: Navy Lodge North Island and Navy Inn

You will have two main options for temporary lodging on Naval Base Coronado, and both fill up fast — especially during summer PCS season. Book the moment you have orders.

Navy Lodge North Island

  • Address: Building 1401-A, Rogers Road, NAS North Island, San Diego, CA 92135
  • Phone: (619) 435-0191 or toll-free 1-800-NAVY-INN (1-800-628-9466)
  • Check-in/out: 4:00 PM / 11:00 AM
  • Pet policy: Not pet-friendly (only ADA service animals)
  • Roughly 300 rooms, including beachfront options, with rooftop ocean views, complimentary breakfast, kitchenette suites, an outdoor pool, and direct beach access. Notably, this is one of the most-requested Navy Lodges in the country, so reservations open up and disappear quickly.

Navy Inn North Island (formerly Navy Gateway Inns & Suites)

  • Address: 1300 Rogers Road, Building 1521, San Diego, CA 92135
  • Phone: (619) 545-9551 or toll-free 1-877-NAVY-BED
  • Check-in/out: 4:00 PM / 11:00 AM
  • Pet policy: Pet-friendly rooms available at NAB Coronado location — call (619) 437-3860

Lodge rates subject to change. Verify current pricing on the official Navy Lodge website at the time of booking.

PCS tip: Coronado lodge demand is extreme during PCS season. If you cannot get a room at either lodge for your full transition window, look at Imperial Beach or Liberty Station for backup TLE-eligible hotels — and budget for the gap, since San Diego hotel rates are not cheap.

Schools and Child Care

There are no DoDEA schools at Naval Base Coronado. Your district depends entirely on where you live.

If you live on the island of Coronado

You are in Coronado Unified School District (CUSD) — and that is genuinely a good thing. CUSD serves roughly 2,800 students across four schools, has a 41% military student population, and operates a robust military partnership including Military Family Life Counselors on every campus, dedicated School Liaison support, and deployment programs like Operation PALs and Anchored4Life. School placement within CUSD is determined by your address:

  • Living on NASNI, in Coronado Village, or Coronado Shores: Village Elementary (TK-5), Coronado Middle (6-8), Coronado High (9-12)
  • Living on NAB Coronado, in Silver Strand housing, Fiddler’s Cove, or Coronado Cays: Silver Strand Elementary (TK-5), Coronado Middle (6-8), Coronado High (9-12)

If you live off the island

You will most likely fall into San Diego Unified School District (city of San Diego), Chula Vista Elementary School District (with two dedicated Navy School Liaisons supporting Naval Base Coronado families), or Sweetwater Union High School District (South Bay). Poway Unified, north of the city, is highly rated but commutes are long.

School Liaison Officer

The Naval Base Coronado School Liaison Officer is your single best resource for sorting through enrollment options before you arrive. Email nbcslo@us.navy.mil or call (619) 767-1789. The San Diego SLO is reachable at (858) 349-7678.

Child Development Center (CDC)

The NAS North Island CDC handles infant through pre-K care for Naval Base Coronado families. Reach the CDC directly at (619) 545-0259. Enrollment is managed through MilitaryChildCare.com — register the moment you have orders, because San Diego CDC waitlists are persistently long. Before- and after-school care for Coronado school-age kids is available through the Silver Strand Child & Youth Center at (619) 435-5056.

In-Processing and Gate Hours

Naval Base Coronado has multiple gates across two main installations. Knowing which gate to use saves you 30 minutes on day one.

NAS North Island Gates

  • Stockdale Main Gate (Gate 1): Intersection of Third and Alameda Boulevard. Open 24/7. This is the primary gate for incoming families and is where you’ll head if you arrive after hours.
  • Ocean Boulevard Gate: Open inbound only 0500–0700, both directions 0700–1700 weekdays. Useful for residents living in Coronado Village.
  • Carrier (Commercial) Gate: Open 0500–1700 Monday through Friday, primarily for commercial deliveries and contractors.

NAB Coronado Gate

NAB has a single main entrance off State Route 75 (Silver Strand Boulevard), staffed 24/7 for authorized personnel.

Visitor Control Center (NASNI)

  • Address: 4th Avenue, Building 680, San Diego, CA 92118
  • Phone: (619) 545-6071 or (619) 545-7413 for access cards
  • Hours: Monday–Friday 0630–1600, closed weekends and holidays

The VCC issues DBIDS credentials, contractor passes, special event passes, and temporary vehicle passes. If you are sponsoring family members or guests, they must be vetted and registered before entry. Pre-enroll in DBIDS online before you arrive when possible — it saves significant time at the gate.

First stop on arrival

Sailors checking into Naval Base Coronado report directly to their assigned command first; commands handle individual sponsor pickup and orientation. If you arrive after hours, the NAS North Island Duty Office at (619) 545-8123 can reach the Duty Yeoman. The Administration Department main line is (619) 545-8164 / 8175.

Use our PCS Binder & Checklist to organize orders, ID cards, immunization records, and school documents before you arrive — it makes in-processing dramatically less stressful. For sailors handling their own move, our DITY/PPM move guide covers the reimbursement math and timeline.

Medical and Healthcare

Active-duty sailors at Naval Base Coronado primarily receive care through the Branch Health Clinic NAS North Island for routine appointments. The clinic is located at Building 601, McCain Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92135, with the appointment line at (619) 532-8225. Hours are typically Monday–Friday 0730–1600, closed weekends and holidays. Specialty referrals, inpatient care, and complex cases route to Naval Medical Center San Diego (“Balboa Hospital”) at 34800 Bob Wilson Drive — one of the Navy’s most advanced military treatment facilities.

Key clinic numbers

  • Acute Care: (619) 545-0467
  • Pharmacy & Refills: (619) 545-4290
  • Optometry: (619) 545-4320

  • Dependent Health Records: (619) 545-0904
  • Health Benefits Advisor: (619) 545-0399

TRICARE enrollment

San Diego is in TRICARE West Region. Update DEERS the day you arrive (or before) and re-enroll your family in TRICARE Prime through your new region. The DEERS/ID Card Office at NASNI is at 104 Murray Street, Building 251, Room 109, with appointments at (619) 545-4738.

Emergencies

For all on-base emergencies, dial 9-911. The nearest off-base ER is Sharp Coronado Hospital in the city of Coronado for residents on the island, or Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego for mainland residents.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is San Diego International Airport (SAN) / Lindbergh Field, roughly 8.5 miles from NAS North Island and a 15–25 minute drive depending on traffic. From the airport, take Harbor Drive to the Coronado Bridge (CA-75) and follow signs to Naval Air Station North Island. For NAB Coronado, continue south on the Silver Strand (CA-75) approximately 5 miles past Coronado Village.

If you are driving in from out of state, take I-5 to the Coronado Bridge exit, or come up from the south via I-5 to Imperial Beach and the Silver Strand. Notably, the Coronado Bridge has occasional closures for maintenance — always have an alternate route via the Silver Strand programmed in your GPS.

Coronado does not have rail or major public transit serving the base directly. Plan to bring a vehicle or arrange one before arrival. For sailors handling their own move logistics, our military moving tips cover the practical side of getting your family across the country.

Things to Do at and Around Naval Base Coronado

The truth about a Coronado tour is that even with the housing math being painful, families consistently rank it among the best assignments in the Navy because of where you actually live. Coronado Beach is regularly ranked one of the best beaches in America. Furthermore, the climate stays between 50 and 77 degrees year-round, and you have San Diego — zoo, Sea World, Balboa Park, La Jolla, the Padres — twenty minutes away.

On-base recreation includes the 18-hole Sea ‘N Air Golf Course at NASNI with ocean views, the Breakers Beach recreation area, an outdoor pool, and a fitness center. Furthermore, the MWR-run North Island Beach Cottages (Building 1401-A, reservations at 1-855-YOUR-MWR) are a hidden perk for sailors looking for a quick beachfront getaway. ITT (Information, Tickets & Travel) at NASNI sells discounted tickets to San Diego Zoo, Sea World, LEGOLAND, theme parks, and California attractions. As a result, your MWR card pays for itself fast.

Off base, families gravitate to Coronado’s Hotel Del Coronado, the Ferry Landing, Centennial Park, the bike path along the bay, and the Sunday farmers market. South of NAB, Imperial Beach has the southernmost surf break in California and a low-key boardwalk scene.

PCS Tips for Naval Base Coronado

1. Apply for Liberty Military Housing the moment you have orders. Coronado on-island waitlists can stretch past 50 months for some communities. Mainland Liberty communities move faster but still take 6–18 months. Furthermore, applying early costs nothing and locks in your waitlist position.

2. Choose your gate before you choose your neighborhood. Living in Eastlake but checking in at NAB? You’re driving the Silver Strand every day. Living in Imperial Beach but assigned to NASNI? You’re crossing the bridge twice daily in heavy traffic. Pick your community based on where you actually report.

3. Book temporary lodging the day orders drop. Navy Lodge North Island and Navy Inn fill up months ahead during summer PCS season. If you cannot secure either, line up backup TLE-eligible hotels in Coronado, Liberty Station, or Imperial Beach immediately.

4. Coronado Unified is worth fighting for — but only if you can afford to live in it. The CUSD military partnership is one of the strongest in the country, with a 41% military student population. However, on-island rents are steep. Run the BAH math against your rank before committing emotionally to Coronado schools.

5. California does not tax your military pay if California isn’t your state of legal residence. Under the SCRA, California cannot tax active-duty pay for sailors who claim residency in another state. Verify your state of residency status with base legal during in-processing — it can save thousands per year.

6. Get a plan before you sign anything. San Diego is unforgiving to PCS families who try to figure it out after they arrive. Every smooth Coronado PCS starts with a plan. Start your free PCS Plan™ and get a personalized roadmap built around your rank, your timeline, and the actual gate you’re using.

Frequently Asked Questions About Naval Base Coronado

What ZIP code does Naval Base Coronado use for BAH?

NAS North Island uses 92135, NAB Coronado and the city of Coronado use 92118, and most off-base mainland communities use San Diego County ZIPs. All fall under the San Diego County Military Housing Area (MHA), which sets a single BAH rate across the region. Use the BAH Calculator with your specific ZIP and pay grade for your exact rate.

How long is the on-base housing waitlist at Naval Base Coronado?

It depends heavily on the community. Coronado on-island waitlists can run from several months to 50 months or longer for the most desirable neighborhoods. Mainland Liberty Military Housing communities throughout San Diego County typically run 6–18 months. Apply through Liberty Military Housing the day you receive orders and call the CNRSW Family Housing Welcome Center at (619) 556-8443 to confirm your position.

What are the gate hours at NAS North Island?

The Stockdale Main Gate (Gate 1) at Third and Alameda is open 24/7 and is the primary gate for incoming families. The Ocean Boulevard Gate is open inbound only 0500–0700 and bidirectional 0700–1700 on weekdays. The Carrier Gate runs 0500–1700 Monday through Friday for commercial deliveries.

Can I get temporary lodging on Naval Base Coronado during my PCS?

Yes. Navy Lodge North Island ((619) 435-0191) is the most popular option with roughly 300 beachfront rooms and complimentary breakfast — but no pets allowed. Navy Inn North Island ((619) 545-9551) is the alternative, and the NGIS at NAB Coronado ((619) 437-3860) accepts pets. Book the day your orders drop because both fill months ahead during summer PCS season.

What school district serves Naval Base Coronado?

Families living on the island of Coronado (NASNI, NAB, Coronado Village, Coronado Cays, Silver Strand) are in Coronado Unified School District (CUSD), which has a 41% military student population and a dedicated School Liaison. Off-island families fall into San Diego Unified, Chula Vista Elementary, Sweetwater Union High, or Poway Unified depending on their address. Email the NBC School Liaison at nbcslo@us.navy.mil before you choose a neighborhood.

How do I check in at Naval Base Coronado?

Sailors report directly to their assigned command first — your sponsor handles your unit-level check-in and orientation. If you arrive after hours, call the NAS North Island Duty Office at (619) 545-8123. Pre-enroll in DBIDS online before you arrive to speed up base access at the gate.

Is there a hospital on Naval Base Coronado?

The Branch Health Clinic at NAS North Island handles routine outpatient care, with an appointment line at (619) 532-8225. There is no hospital on the installation; specialty care, inpatient care, and emergencies route to Naval Medical Center San Diego (“Balboa Hospital”) on the mainland. For on-base emergencies, dial 9-911.

Is Coronado a good duty station for families?

Yes — but with a caveat. The lifestyle is genuinely outstanding: world-class beaches, year-round 50–77 degree weather, strong on-base recreation, and excellent schools if you live in CUSD. However, the cost of living is among the highest in the country, deployment tempo for Pacific Fleet commands is real, and traffic on the Coronado Bridge during rush hour is not for the impatient. Families who plan housing and schools early thrive here.

Does my BAH cover rent on Coronado Island?

For most enlisted ranks (E-1 through E-6), San Diego BAH does not cover average Coronado on-island rent without supplementing out of pocket — the average three-bedroom rents for $4,500–$7,000+ per month. Senior enlisted (E-7+) and most officer ranks have more flexibility. Most Naval Base Coronado families live off the island in Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, Eastlake, Point Loma, or National City to make BAH stretch further.

How long is the commute from Chula Vista to Naval Base Coronado?

Plan for 25–40 minutes from Eastlake or Chula Vista to NAS North Island via the Coronado Bridge during morning rush. NAB Coronado is 20–35 minutes from Chula Vista via I-5 to the Silver Strand. Reverse commute from the South Bay can stretch significantly longer if there’s an incident on the bridge — always have a Silver Strand backup route programmed in your GPS.

Where do I get my military ID card at Naval Base Coronado?

The DEERS/ID Card Office is at 104 Murray Street, Building 251, Room 109 on NAS North Island. Call (619) 545-4738 to schedule an appointment. Update DEERS the day you arrive — most TRICARE, school enrollment, and base access issues trace back to outdated DEERS records.

What’s the closest airport to Naval Base Coronado?

San Diego International Airport (SAN), also called Lindbergh Field, is about 8.5 miles from NAS North Island and a 15–25 minute drive depending on traffic. From the airport, take Harbor Drive to the Coronado Bridge (CA-75). Rideshare and taxi service to the base is widely available; rental cars are recommended for families settling in.

Key Takeaways

  • Apply for Liberty Military Housing immediately. Waitlists run from months to years depending on community. Apply the day orders drop, even if you plan to live off base — it costs nothing to be on the list.
  • Pick your neighborhood based on your gate, not Coronado’s reputation. Eastlake, Imperial Beach, Point Loma, and National City all serve different commutes. Choose based on where you’ll actually report each day.
  • Coronado Unified School District is worth the rent if you can afford it. A 41% military student population and one of the strongest district-Navy partnerships in the country. Off-island families have strong options in Chula Vista Elementary and San Diego Unified.
  • Book temporary lodging the day orders drop. Navy Lodge North Island and Navy Inn fill months ahead during PCS season. Have backup TLE-eligible hotels lined up in case both are full.
  • San Diego BAH is high — and so is the rent. Run your real numbers before committing to a neighborhood. Use the BAH Calculator for your exact rate, and your free VA Home Loan Snapshot to see what BAH actually buys at current rates.
  • Plan early or pay for it later. Naval Base Coronado rewards families who plan ahead and punishes families who don’t. Start your free PCS Plan™ and get a personalized roadmap from a military-connected Ambassador who knows San Diego from every gate.

Book the day your orders drop because both fill months ahead during summer PCS season.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “What school district serves Naval Base Coronado?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “Families living on the island of Coronado (NASNI, NAB, Coronado Village, Coronado Cays, Silver Strand) are in Coronado Unified School District (CUSD), which has a 41% military student population and a dedicated School Liaison. Off-island families fall into San Diego Unified, Chula Vista Elementary, Sweetwater Union High, or Poway Unified depending on their address. Email the NBC School Liaison at nbcslo@us.navy.mil before you choose a neighborhood.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “How do I check in at Naval Base Coronado?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “Sailors report directly to their assigned command first — your sponsor handles your unit-level check-in and orientation. If you arrive after hours, call the NAS North Island Duty Office at (619) 545-8123. Pre-enroll in DBIDS online before you arrive to speed up base access at the gate.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “Is there a hospital on Naval Base Coronado?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “The Branch Health Clinic at NAS North Island handles routine outpatient care, with an appointment line at (619) 532-8225. There is no hospital on the installation; specialty care, inpatient care, and emergencies route to Naval Medical Center San Diego (Balboa Hospital) on the mainland. For on-base emergencies, dial 9-911.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “Is Coronado a good duty station for families?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “Yes — but with a caveat. The lifestyle is genuinely outstanding: world-class beaches, year-round 50-77 degree weather, strong on-base recreation, and excellent schools if you live in CUSD. However, the cost of living is among the highest in the country, deployment tempo for Pacific Fleet commands is real, and traffic on the Coronado Bridge during rush hour is not for the impatient. Families who plan housing and schools early thrive here.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “Does my BAH cover rent on Coronado Island?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “For most enlisted ranks (E-1 through E-6), San Diego BAH does not cover average Coronado on-island rent without supplementing out of pocket — the average three-bedroom rents for $4,500-$7,000+ per month. Senior enlisted (E-7+) and most officer ranks have more flexibility. Most Naval Base Coronado families live off the island in Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, Eastlake, Point Loma, or National City to make BAH stretch further.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “How long is the commute from Chula Vista to Naval Base Coronado?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “Plan for 25-40 minutes from Eastlake or Chula Vista to NAS North Island via the Coronado Bridge during morning rush. NAB Coronado is 20-35 minutes from Chula Vista via I-5 to the Silver Strand. Reverse commute from the South Bay can stretch significantly longer if there’s an incident on the bridge — always have a Silver Strand backup route programmed in your GPS.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “Where do I get my military ID card at Naval Base Coronado?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “The DEERS/ID Card Office is at 104 Murray Street, Building 251, Room 109 on NAS North Island. Call (619) 545-4738 to schedule an appointment. Update DEERS the day you arrive — most TRICARE, school enrollment, and base access issues trace back to outdated DEERS records.” } }, { “@type”: “Question”, “name”: “What’s the closest airport to Naval Base Coronado?”, “acceptedAnswer”: { “@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “San Diego International Airport (SAN), also called Lindbergh Field, is about 8.5 miles from NAS North Island and a 15-25 minute drive depending on traffic. From the airport, take Harbor Drive to the Coronado Bridge (CA-75). Rideshare and taxi service to the base is widely available; rental cars are recommended for families settling in.” } } ] }
