About Patrick Space Force Base

Patrick Space Force Base — officially redesignated from Patrick Air Force Base on December 9, 2020, the same day Cape Canaveral Air Force Station became Cape Canaveral Space Force Station — was originally established in 1940 as Naval Air Station Banana River. Today it is home to Space Launch Delta 45 (SLD 45), which serves as both the host unit for Patrick SFB and the command authority for the Eastern Range and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS). The combined installation complex supports approximately 13,000 military personnel, dependents, civilian employees, and contractors.

Important distinction: Patrick SFB and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station are two separate installations, though they are managed together under SLD 45. Patrick SFB is located along A1A between Satellite Beach and Cocoa Beach. CCSFS is a few miles north, on Cape Canaveral itself. If your assignment is to CCSFS, verify which installation your unit is physically located on — gate access, housing, and commute routes differ.

2026 BAH Rates for Patrick Space Force Base

Patrick SFB falls under Military Housing Area FL059, covering ZIP codes throughout Brevard County from Titusville south to Melbourne and Palm Bay. BAH at Patrick SFB ranks 14th highest out of all Air Force and Space Force bases in the country — reflecting the coastal Florida housing market. Florida has no state income tax, which meaningfully increases your effective buying power compared to most duty stations.

Pay Grade With Dependents Without Dependents
E-1 through E-4 $2,325/mo $1,845/mo
E-5 $2,502/mo $2,037/mo
E-6 $2,883/mo $2,163/mo
E-7 $2,907/mo $2,331/mo
E-8 $2,916/mo $2,583/mo

O-3 $2,922/mo $2,742/mo
O-4 $3,108/mo $2,883/mo
O-5 $3,267/mo $2,892/mo
O-6 $3,294/mo $2,895/mo

Verify your exact rate using the DoD BAH Calculator with your specific ZIP code. For a full breakdown of how BAH works and how to pair it with your VA benefit, see our 2026 BAH rates guide.

Real talk on Space Coast housing costs: Coastal properties near Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach carry a premium, and vacation-rental demand drives some rental prices above BAH for beach-adjacent units. You can stretch your BAH significantly by looking slightly inland — Merritt Island, Rockledge, Melbourne, and Viera all offer strong value within the same BAH area. Many E-5 and above families find that buying with a VA Home Loan — zero down, no PMI, no Florida state income tax — is the smartest financial move available to them here. Also factor in flood and wind insurance costs for coastal properties; these can add meaningfully to monthly housing costs that BAH doesn’t fully account for.

On-Base Housing at Patrick Space Force Base

On-base family housing is privatized and managed by Hunt Military Communities under the name Patrick Family Housing. The community includes 616 renovated single-family homes across three distinct neighborhoods. Residents pay an allotment equal to their BAH — no out-of-pocket upfront costs for active duty members. All homes are pet-friendly (two pet limit, $200 refundable deposit per pet; no aggressive breeds).

On-Base Housing Neighborhoods

Neighborhood Location on Base Bedrooms Highlights
River’s Edge Northern tip of base, along the Banana River 3–4 BR River views, walking paths, pool, playground; serene setting tucked between the Banana River and the Atlantic side
Oceanside / Central Central base, near Commissary and Exchange 3–4 BR Convenient to all base amenities including BX, Commissary, golf course, and marina; single-family and duplex-style homes

On-base housing also includes a North Patrick area with additional single-family homes and duplexes. Senior NCOs and officers should ask specifically about availability in Pelican Coast, which offers the most upgraded floor plans.

All newly assigned personnel are required to report to the Housing Office before entering any lease or purchase contract for off-base housing. Single and unaccompanied enlisted E-4 and below must also check with Dormitory Management before going off base.

Off-Base Neighborhoods Near Patrick SFB

Patrick SFB is on a barrier island — which means off-base housing is almost entirely on the mainland or in beach communities. Your commute, home price, and school zone all shift significantly depending on which side of the water you choose. Here’s the breakdown every incoming family needs to read before house-hunting.

On-Base & Adjacent: Satellite Beach

Satellite Beach is directly adjacent to Patrick SFB and the most popular off-base choice for military families. Commutes to the base gates run 5–10 minutes. The neighborhood has a tight-knit feel, relatively low crime, and access to top-rated Brevard County schools. Home prices have climbed with Space Coast growth — expect $380,000–$550,000+ for 3–4 bedroom homes, though smaller or older properties can run lower. Flood and wind insurance adds to monthly costs for homes closer to the shore. South Patrick Shores (within the Satellite Beach mailing area) is particularly popular — taxes run slightly lower than the city proper with the same school zones.

Cocoa Beach

Three miles north of the base, Cocoa Beach is a true beach town with walkable restaurants, surf shops, and that “every day feels like vacation” energy that families either love or can’t handle. Commute is 5–15 minutes via A1A. The downside: vacation-rental demand drives rents significantly above what BAH may cover in some neighborhoods, and the tourist season brings real traffic on A1A. Home prices range widely, with oceanfront and canal properties well above BAH, while streets further west offer more manageable pricing.

Merritt Island

Just across the Banana River from the base via the Pineda Causeway, Merritt Island offers a quieter, more suburban feel with good schools, larger lots, and more affordable prices than the beach communities. Commute to base gates runs 10–20 minutes. Families who want space and value over beach proximity often land here and love it. Merritt Island is also the closest off-base option to Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, making it popular for CCSFS-assigned personnel.

Rockledge & Viera

About 15–25 minutes from the base, Rockledge and the planned community of Viera offer newer construction, strong school options, and the most family-friendly suburban infrastructure of any area near Patrick SFB. Viera in particular has excellent amenities, A-rated schools, and a growing dining and shopping district. Home prices in Viera run $350,000–$500,000+ for newer construction. This is where most families with school-age children who’ve done their research tend to land.

Melbourne & Indialantic

About 12–20 minutes south of the base, Melbourne and the beach community of Indialantic offer a solid range of options. Melbourne proper is more affordable and has Melbourne International Airport for easy travel. Indialantic sits beachside with a community feel similar to Satellite Beach but slightly further from the gate. Both fall within Brevard County Schools.

Palm Bay

The most affordable option in Brevard County, Palm Bay sits about 23–30 minutes south of the base. Home prices are significantly lower than coastal communities, with 3-bedroom homes available at accessible price points. It’s a large city (~100,000 residents) with growing infrastructure, but the longer commute and distance from the beach make it best suited for families optimizing for housing budget over beach proximity.

Neighborhood Comparison

Area Commute 2026 Home Price Range Best For
Satellite Beach 5–10 min $350,000–$550,000+ Shortest commute, great schools, beach proximity
Cocoa Beach 5–15 min $350,000–$650,000+ Beach lifestyle, walkability, Space Coast culture
Merritt Island 10–20 min $290,000–$450,000 Space, value, close to CCSFS, quieter
Rockledge / Viera 15–25 min $320,000–$500,000+ Top-rated schools, newer construction, suburban amenities
Melbourne / Indialantic 12–20 min $270,000–$450,000 Mid-range pricing, airport access, beach option
Palm Bay 23–30 min $220,000–$340,000 Most affordable, largest city, best for budget buyers

Important for buyers: Florida has no state income tax, and your VA loan eliminates the down payment and PMI. Between BAH and the VA benefit, many families at Patrick SFB come out ahead financially by buying rather than renting — even on a 2–3 year tour. Get your VA Home Loan snapshot early so you know your buying power before house-hunting season hits.

Gate Access at Patrick Space Force Base

Patrick SFB is accessed via two primary gates, both on the western side of A1A. A $9.7 million South Gate reconstruction project kicked off in January 2026, with completion expected mid-2026. Living on the Space Coast

The Space Coast is one of those rare duty stations where the assignment genuinely sells itself. You are going to watch rocket launches — sometimes from the parking lot, sometimes from your backyard, sometimes at 2 a.m. when SpaceX scrubs and relaunches and the sky lights up orange over the Atlantic. It does not get old.

Things to Do Near Patrick SFB

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is the crown jewel of the area, located about 20–30 minutes north. Military families get significant discounts and can often watch launches from designated viewing areas. The complex includes shuttle exhibits, rocket gardens, the Astronaut Hall of Fame, and IMAX theaters — plan a full day and go multiple times during your tour.

Cape Canaveral Space Force Station itself conducts launches visible to the public and to personnel on base. Launch schedules are posted publicly — get in the habit of checking SpaceX and ULA launch manifests. There is genuinely nothing like watching a Falcon 9 lift off from a few miles away.

Canaveral National Seashore offers 24 miles of undeveloped Atlantic beach — no vendors, no crowds, no development. It is regularly ranked among the best beaches in Florida for exactly that reason. Port Canaveral, just north of Cocoa Beach, has become a serious waterfront dining destination alongside its cruise terminal — great for date nights and family outings. The Brevard Zoo in Melbourne is one of the best small zoos in the Southeast, with free-roaming animal encounters and paddleboats through the exhibits.

Orlando is about 60 miles west — close enough for a Disney or Universal day trip, far enough that it’s a deliberate choice rather than a commute. Tampa is roughly 2 hours south. Miami is about 3 hours. Your Space Coast location puts a lot of Florida within reach.

Spouse Employment on the Space Coast

Brevard County’s economy is uniquely wired for military-connected talent. The aerospace and defense sector — SpaceX, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, United Launch Alliance, Northrop Grumman, and dozens of contractors — actively recruits both active duty and military spouses with technical backgrounds. Even non-technical spouses benefit from the education, healthcare, and service sector jobs a growing county brings. The A&FRC at (321) 494-2102 has employer connections and can connect you to the Military Spouse Employment Partnership network.

Frequently Asked Questions: Patrick SFB PCS

Is it Patrick AFB or Patrick Space Force Base?

It is Patrick Space Force Base. The installation was officially redesignated from Patrick Air Force Base on December 9, 2020, becoming one of the first two installations in the newly established U.S. Space Force — alongside Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Using “Patrick AFB” in your housing or school searches may still return relevant results (many local businesses and databases haven’t fully updated), but the correct official name is Patrick Space Force Base, or Patrick SFB. Correspondingly, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station is now Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS).

What are the 2026 BAH rates for Patrick Space Force Base?

The 2026 BAH rates for Patrick SFB (Military Housing Area FL059) range from $2,325/month for E-1 through E-4 with dependents to $3,294/month for an O-6 with dependents. Patrick SFB ranks 14th highest out of all Air Force and Space Force bases nationally. Without dependents, rates run from $1,845/month (E-1 through E-4) to $2,892/month (O-5). Florida has no state income tax, which improves effective buying power. Confirm your exact rate by rank and dependency status using the DoD BAH Calculator.

What are the current gate hours at Patrick SFB?

As of early 2026, the Main Gate (East Gate) on A1A is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is currently the only operational gate. The South Gate off Pineda Causeway is closed until further notice due to a $9.7 million reconstruction project that began January 2026, with completion expected mid-2026. All inbound and outbound traffic is directed to the Main Gate, accessible from both northbound and southbound A1A. Check patrick.spaceforce.mil for updates on the South Gate reopening. The Visitor Control Center is located on Matador St: (321) 494-0427, open daily 0600–2200.

What is the difference between Patrick SFB and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station?

They are two separate military installations, both managed under Space Launch Delta 45 (SLD 45). Patrick SFB is located on A1A between Satellite Beach and Cocoa Beach — it’s the main garrison installation with housing, the BX, the Commissary, the medical group, and most family support services. Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS) is a few miles north on Cape Canaveral proper — it’s where the actual launch pads are, including historic Launch Complex 39A (used by SpaceX Crew Dragon and Falcon Heavy) and dozens of active and legacy pads. CCSFS has its own access controls. If your unit is physically on CCSFS, confirm housing and commute logistics based on that location separately from Patrick SFB guidance.

How do I apply for on-base housing at Patrick SFB?

Contact the Military Housing Office at (321) 494-2594, located at 514 Falcon Avenue, Patrick SFB, FL 32925. All newly assigned personnel are required to visit the MHO in person before entering any off-base lease or purchase contract. On-base housing (616 homes across River’s Edge, Oceanside/Central, and Pelican Coast) is managed by Hunt Military Communities as Patrick Family Housing: (321) 613-3810 or (888) 678-4589 | patrick-family-housing.com. Rent equals your full BAH allotment — no upfront out-of-pocket costs for active duty.

What schools will my children attend near Patrick SFB?

Families at Patrick SFB attend Brevard Public Schools, one of the stronger school districts in Florida — above the state average in both math and reading proficiency. School zones depend on your home address. Families in on-base River’s Edge and Oceanside housing are zoned for Roosevelt Elementary, with bus transportation to Satellite Senior High School (ranked #69 in Florida). Top nearby options include Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High (IB and AP programs, ranked #85 in FL), Edgewood Jr/Sr High on Merritt Island (#6 in FL), and Freedom 7 Elementary (IB magnet, Cocoa Beach). Confirm your zone at brevardschools.org before signing a lease. Charter and magnet school applications are available through BPS School Choice. Contact the A&FRC School Liaison at (321) 494-2102 for enrollment guidance.

Where should I live near Patrick SFB?

The most popular choice is Satellite Beach — directly adjacent to the base, 5–10 minute commutes, top-rated schools, and beach proximity, though home prices reflect all of that. Merritt Island offers more space and value while staying close to the base. Viera and Rockledge are the go-to for families prioritizing newer construction and top-rated suburban schools, at the cost of a slightly longer commute (15–25 min). Cocoa Beach has lifestyle appeal but vacation-rental pricing makes it tighter on BAH. Palm Bay is the most affordable at 23–30 minutes out. One note for all coastal properties: factor flood and wind insurance into your monthly housing budget — these add real costs that BAH doesn’t account for. Join the Patrick SFB PCS Pay It Forward® group for honest neighborhood reviews from families currently stationed here.

What healthcare is available at Patrick SFB?

The 45th Medical Group at 1381 S. Patrick Drive provides primary care, pediatrics, family health, flight medicine, optometry, physical therapy, mental health, immunizations, lab, pharmacy, and diagnostic imaging to over 54,000 eligible beneficiaries. Main appointment line: (321) 494-8241 or 1-888-728-2873. Hours: Monday–Friday 0730–1630. Pharmacy: (321) 494-8739. Patrick SFB is in the TRICARE East Region — advanced care is referred to the Health First hospital network (Cape Canaveral Hospital and Holmes Regional in Melbourne). Update your DEERS information immediately on arrival to maintain continuous TRICARE coverage. The 24/7 TRICARE Nurse Advice Line is (800) 874-2273, option 1.

Can I watch rocket launches from Patrick SFB?

Yes — and it is one of the genuine highlights of this assignment. Launch visibility from the base and surrounding area depends on the trajectory and timing of each mission. SpaceX Falcon 9 launches from Cape Canaveral’s nearby pads are visible from A1A, the beach, and often from anywhere in Brevard County on clear nights. The base maintains launch viewing areas for authorized personnel. Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex also offers official launch viewing packages. Check SpaceX’s launch manifests and the Patrick SFB website for base-specific viewing guidance. During your first month, ask someone at your unit — there is a culture around watching launches and families quickly learn the best local viewing spots.
