Fort Riley has been shaping Army history since 1853, when it was established to protect settlers moving along the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails. Today it is the home of the 1st Infantry Division — “The Big Red One” — the oldest continuously serving active-duty division in the U.S. Army. The post covers roughly 101,000 acres of rolling Flint Hills prairie in north-central Kansas, sitting directly between Junction City and Manhattan.
The installation supports approximately 15,000 active-duty soldiers and more than 18,000 family members, with another 30,000 veterans and retirees living in the surrounding area. All in-processing soldiers must report to the 1st Replacement Company, Bldg 208, Custer Avenue. The Staff Duty Desk is staffed 24/7 at (785) 239-2119. All soldiers attend the 1ID Victory Welcome, held every Wednesday — plan your arrival accordingly.
Fort Riley’s BAH falls in the lower-to-mid range nationally, but the local housing market is one of the most affordable in the Army. The post has approximately 3,200+ family housing units. Assignment is based on rank and bedroom qualification. Manhattan is 15–20 minutes from Henry Gate and offers a college-town atmosphere thanks to Kansas State University. Families living on post or in Junction City are served by Geary County Unified School District 475. The district operates five elementary schools and one middle school directly on post. Fort Riley Elementary and Fort Riley Middle School are staffed by educators experienced with military-connected students — they understand deployment cycles, frequent moves, and the specific challenges that come with PCS life.

Families in Manhattan are served by Manhattan-Ogden USD 383, which is consistently rated higher than USD 475 and benefits from the academic culture surrounding Kansas State University. Many families choose to live in Manhattan specifically for access to USD 383, accepting the slightly longer commute in exchange for the school quality.
Kansas State University in Manhattan offers extensive continuing education, and several colleges have on-post presence for soldiers pursuing degrees. Fort Riley’s primary medical facility is Irwin Army Community Hospital (IACH), located at 650 Huebner Road on post. IACH serves more than 30,000 active-duty soldiers and family members annually and provides a full range of services including emergency care, obstetrics and gynecology, physical therapy, pharmacy, and specialty clinics.

Army Community Service is located in Building 207 (Soldier Support Center) and is one of the strongest on-post resources for families navigating a new PCS. Services include relocation assistance, financial readiness counseling, employment assistance, the Family Advocacy Program, a Loan Closet, and the New Parent Support Program. Fort Riley operates six Child Development Centers (CDCs) on post, covering infant, toddler, preschool, and school-age care. Wait times for infant and toddler slots run 4–8 months. EFMP enrollment is handled through Irwin Army Community Hospital and is required before PCS for eligible family members. Employment options in Junction City are limited, with the local economy dominated by retail, healthcare, base civilian positions, and service industries. Manhattan offers a broader range of opportunities in education, healthcare, and tech due to Kansas State University’s presence. Fort Riley’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program is robust for a mid-sized post. On-post amenities include six fitness centers, outdoor pools, a bowling center, and the Custer Hill Golf Course. The Twin Lakes Recreation Area offers boating and fishing minutes from the barracks.
Off post, the Flint Hills region is a genuine outdoor paradise. Milford Lake — Kansas’s largest reservoir — is about 8 miles from post and a year-round destination for fishing, camping, and boating. The Konza Prairie near Manhattan offers hiking trails through tallgrass prairie that has to be seen to be believed. Tuttle Creek State Park is another popular family weekend destination.
Kansas City is two hours east for pro sports, concerts, and big-city shopping runs. Topeka is one hour east for a day trip. Manhattan’s Aggieville district offers restaurants, bars, and live music that give the area a college-town energy that many families appreciate — especially after duty stations with less to do off post.
One thing to plan for: tornadoes. Kansas is tornado country, and April through June brings real risk. The installation has an excellent warning system. Research the nearest shelter to your home or housing neighborhood before your first spring season, and take the siren drills seriously.
Families stationed at Fort Riley consistently mention the same things. The BAH-to-cost ratio is one of the best in the Army — your dollar genuinely goes further here. The community is tight and people look out for one another, especially during deployments. The 1st Infantry Division runs hot operationally, so expect real deployment cycles — approximately 9–12 months every 2–3 years, plus NTC and JRTC rotations.
