Fort Bliss is one of the largest military installations in the United States. It covers approximately 1.12 million acres — about 1,700 square miles — across El Paso County, Texas and southern New Mexico. Notably, it is the second largest Army installation in the country. The post is home to the 1st Armored Division, known as “Old Ironsides.”
Named for Lieutenant Colonel William Bliss, son-in-law of President Zachary Taylor, Fort Bliss was established in 1849 as an outpost at El Paso del Norte. It was formally designated a permanent post in 1878. Today, it is a major joint operations hub focused on armored warfare, air and missile defense, and power projection.
The installation is primarily Army. However, joint task force operations bring personnel from multiple branches. The economic impact on El Paso is substantial — the DEA, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the FBI all maintain major offices in the city as well.
BAH for Fort Bliss — based on the El Paso, TX Military Housing Area — increased 7% in 2026, outpacing the national average increase of 4.2%. Rates are effective January 1, 2026. El Paso is one of the most affordable mid-size cities in Texas, and your BAH goes a long way here. Specifically, median home prices are around $251,000, well below the national average. If you’re considering using your VA Home Loan benefit, Fort Bliss is one of the best-value markets in the Army.

Fort Bliss offers both on-post privatized housing and a wide range of off-post neighborhoods. Your choice depends on your rank, family size, which unit you’re assigned to, and how close you want to be to each gate. Overall, El Paso is one of the most affordable housing markets at any major Army installation.
On-post housing is privatized and managed by Balfour Beatty Communities (Fort Bliss Family Homes). The quality is excellent — much of the housing was built or renovated over the last 15 years. Consequently, Fort Bliss consistently earns top ratings for family housing within the Army. Floor plans range from smaller duplexes to spacious single-family homes, with walkable neighborhoods, playgrounds, and community centers throughout the installation.
However, demand is high and waitlists are real. Contact the Fort Bliss Housing Office as soon as you receive your orders — not after you arrive.
Fort Bliss Housing Office:

Most military families at Fort Bliss live off post. El Paso is a large city with 139 zip codes, so your neighborhood choice significantly affects your commute. Specifically, Fort Bliss has multiple gates serving different parts of the installation. Choose your neighborhood based on which gate is closest to your unit.
| Area | Nearest Gate | Commute | Character | Price Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Northeast El Paso | Northeast Gate / Sheridan | 5–20 min | Established neighborhoods, affordable, close to base | Low–Medium |
| East El Paso / Horizon City | Cassidy Gate | 30–50 min | Newer developments, growing retail, more space | Low–Medium |
| West El Paso | Biggs AAF / I-10 | 25–45 min | More upscale, Franklin Mountain views, custom homes | Higher |
| Upper Valley | Biggs via I-10 | 35–50 min | Rural-suburban feel, scenic, family-friendly | Medium |
Northeast El Paso is the most popular area for enlisted families. It sits closest to the main installation, offers a solid variety of homes, and provides easy US-54 access to post. Popular pockets include Castner Heights, Park Foothills, Sunrise Acres East, and Angel’s Triangle. Rental rates typically run $1,300–$1,700/month for a 2–3 bedroom home.
East El Paso and neighboring Horizon City offer the newest construction in the metro area. As a result, families find larger homes at lower prices per square foot than in older established neighborhoods. Socorro ISD serves much of this area and is one of the fastest-growing school districts in Texas. The trade-off is a longer drive to Cassidy Gate — expect 30–50 minutes depending on traffic.
West El Paso is the most upscale area of the city. However, the commute to the main installation is genuinely challenging. Crossing the Franklin Mountains requires using Transmountain Road or circling around on congested I-10. Plan for 30-plus minutes during peak traffic. On the other hand, West El Paso is ideal if your unit operates on the Biggs AAF side of the installation.
Rentals in El Paso typically range from $1,200 to $1,800/month for a 2–3 bedroom home. Meanwhile, median home prices in El Paso County are approximately $251,000 — about 41% below the national average. Your Fort Bliss BAH goes further here than at most Army installations. Furthermore, the VA loan market in El Paso is strong and well-established, with lenders experienced in PCS timelines. Check your VA Home Loan eligibility and see our PCS tax write-offs guide before you close.
Fort Bliss zip codes include 79906, 79908, 79916, and 79918. Your neighborhood determines your school district, so plan accordingly. Start your PCS Plan© to get matched with a local Ambassador who can walk you through neighborhoods, current inventory, and commute realities in real time.
Fort Bliss does not have DoDEA schools. Instead, children attend local public school districts, and which district depends entirely on your home address.
The three main districts serving Fort Bliss families are:
In total, approximately 10 school districts serve El Paso County. School quality varies by campus, so research specific schools using Texas Education Agency (TEA) ratings before committing to a neighborhood. In some cases, military families have been able to request transfers to neighboring districts — your gaining unit’s Army Community Service (ACS) office can assist with that process.
EPISD operates multiple elementary schools on the Fort Bliss installation. Children living on post attend these schools automatically. For middle and high school, on-post students typically attend EPISD schools just off the installation. Notably, Fort Bliss does not have an on-post high school under the traditional DoDEA model. Check with EPISD directly for current campus assignments based on your on-post address: episd.org.
For EFMP, special education, or school transition support, contact the Fort Bliss Army Community Service (ACS) office. Furthermore, MilitaryOneSource offers free school liaison services to help military families navigate enrollment across districts.
All Soldiers arriving at Fort Bliss report to the Fort Bliss Reception Company, located at Building 1006, Carter Street. Staff duty is manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you’re flying into El Paso International Airport, call the Reception Company staff duty at (915) 569-5261 for a pickup.

| Transportation Office | Bldg 504A, Pershing Rd | (915) 568-5098 | Mon–Fri, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. |
| Housing Office | Bldg T-0070, Carter Rd | (915) 568-2538 | Mon–Fri, 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. |

Reception Company does not approve PTDY or house-hunting leave upon arrival. Consequently, you must have your losing unit authorize PTDY before you depart. If you need house-hunting time after your report date, request it through your gaining unit. Plan your house search before you arrive whenever possible.
Use move.mil (Defense Personal Property System) to schedule your household goods shipment and track your move. The Fort Bliss Transportation Office is large and busy. As a result, you should contact them early — especially if your PCS falls in peak season (May–August). See our complete military moving tips and DITY/PPM move guide before you schedule.
Freedom Crossing is the Army’s first open-air shopping and dining center, and it genuinely rivals many civilian lifestyle districts. Dining options include Arby’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipotle, Texas Roadhouse, Smashburger, Dairy Queen, and two Starbucks locations on the installation. Retail options include a full-size PX and an Under Armour store. Services include a UPS Store, Dollar Tree, nail salon, hair salons, dry cleaner, and an eye care center.
Additionally, Freedom Crossing features a movie theater with stadium seating and first-run films, a children’s play area with an interactive fountain, an outdoor fireplace and patio, and a seasonal summer concert series. Importantly, Freedom Crossing is open to the public — making it a genuine community hub for El Paso as well.
Beyond Freedom Crossing, the installation has one commissary, multiple shopettes and mini-food courts, mini-Exchanges throughout Main, East, and West Fort Bliss, a Firestone Auto Care Center, and a Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru.
Fort Bliss has seven modern fitness centers, two indoor pools, and three outdoor community pools. Furthermore, the installation includes a 52-lane bowling center and the Warrior Zone — a state-of-the-art recreation facility. The Soldier Activity Center has a rock climbing wall, and the outdoor recreation program offers trips into the surrounding New Mexico landscape. Group fitness classes include Les Mills GRIT, BodyPump, yoga, water aerobics, and cycling. Personal training and massage therapy are also available. A golf complex and tennis club round out the options.
William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC) is one of the largest and most advanced Army medical facilities in the country. Specifically, it is a 1.1-million-square-foot, state-of-the-art hospital providing primary care, specialty services, and emergency care. WBAMC serves active-duty personnel, family members, and retirees throughout the El Paso region. In addition to WBAMC, six medical clinics and pharmacies are located on and off post.
For TRICARE enrollment and off-post referrals, contact the WBAMC Beneficiary Counseling and Assistance Coordinator (BCAC). Non-emergency health concerns are best handled through the TRICARE website, which lists current network providers throughout El Paso.
Main hospital contact: (915) 568-3438
Fort Bliss has an extensive network of on-post Child Development Centers (CDCs) and Family Child Care (FCC) homes. However, demand is high and waitlists are common despite the installation’s size. Register as early as possible at MilitaryChildCare.com. Off-post childcare in El Paso is widely available and notably more affordable than most other duty stations.
IHG Army Hotels operates Holiday Inn and Candlewood Suites properties at Fort Bliss. A Candlewood Suites is located near a 24-hour gate for added convenience during late arrivals. Temporary Lodging Facilities (TLFs) prioritize incoming and outgoing military families, with stays typically capped at 30 days. Book as early as possible — lodging fills quickly during peak PCS season. Pet-friendly rooms are available in limited numbers, so request one specifically when you make your reservation.
Short-term rental apps and hotels near the Sheridan Gate and US-54 corridor offer additional options if TLFs are full. Several area hotels also accept pets — confirm policies before booking.
El Paso consistently ranks among the safest large cities in the United States. The quality of life here tends to surprise families arriving from other duty stations. Here is what your family can look forward to.
El Paso averages over 297 sunny days per year. Summers are hot and dry — expect triple digits from June through August. However, the low humidity makes the heat more bearable than similar temperatures elsewhere. Winters are mild, with lows around 33°F in January and rare light snowfall. In particular, the city occasionally sees wind gusts up to 50 mph from February through early June. Overall, most families adjust quickly and come to appreciate the sunshine.
Franklin Mountains State Park is the largest urban state park in the United States. Miles of hiking trails are accessible right from the city, and the views from North Franklin Peak — 360 degrees across Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico — are genuinely stunning. Additionally, White Sands National Park is approximately 90 minutes from post. The gypsum dunes look like snow year-round, and families with kids will return more than once. Nearby New Mexico offers excellent skiing at Ski Apache and outdoor recreation throughout the Sacramento Mountains.
El Paso’s food scene reflects its deep connection to the Chihuahuan region. Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine here is distinct from what you’ll find elsewhere in Texas — green chile forward and heavily influenced by Juárez. Locals have strong opinions about their favorites. Trust them. The city is majority-Hispanic and genuinely bilingual, creating a rich bicultural environment that most military families find memorable long after their PCS.
The Mission Trail runs through Ysleta and Socorro, home to the oldest continuously operating parishes in Texas. The El Paso Museum of History, Hueco Tanks State Park, and Castner Range (now a national monument) offer additional cultural and outdoor experiences. El Paso is also the only major city in Texas on Mountain Standard Time — a small quirk that surprises a lot of incoming families.

Fort Bliss is one of the best Army duty stations for building equity through homeownership. With a median home price around $251,000 and a zero-down VA loan, your monthly mortgage can often come in at or below what you’d pay in rent — while building equity every month. El Paso home values have shown consistent appreciation, and the strong rental market means you have exit options when your next PCS comes around.
Your 2026 VA loan entitlement is up to $766,550, which gives you ample buying power in this market. However, VA appraisals in El Paso tend to take slightly longer than the national average — plan for 10–14 days rather than the typical 5–7. Start your home search 60–90 days before your report date for the best inventory selection.
Check your VA Home Loan eligibility now. Also see our PCS tax write-offs guide and PCS binder checklist to stay organized throughout the process.
Texas has no state income tax, which means your military pay and BAH are not taxed at the state level. Additionally, Texas veterans may qualify for the Hazlewood Act, which provides tuition exemptions at Texas public colleges and universities for eligible veterans and their dependents. Furthermore, property tax exemptions are available for disabled veterans. Overall, these benefits make Texas one of the most veteran-friendly states in the country.
