Very hot. Daily highs from June through September regularly reach 108°F–115°F with overnight lows only dropping into the mid-80s to mid-90s. Budget $300–$500/month for summer electricity bills to run residential A/C. The heat is dry (unlike the Southeast’s humidity), which makes shade and hydration effective, but outdoor activity shifts to early morning and evening hours from May through October. The trade-off: West Valley winters are genuinely beautiful — 60s–70s, blue skies, no snow — and spring and fall are among the best weather in the country.
Yes — Arizona is favorable compared to most states. Arizona has a flat income tax rate of 2.5%, one of the lowest in the country, significantly less than states like California (up to 13.3%), New York (up to 10.9%), or even Virginia (up to 5.75%). The Phoenix metro housing market, while above national average, is dramatically more affordable than coastal duty stations. BAH at E-5 and above with dependents generally covers rent in Surprise, Goodyear, and Avondale. VA loan usage is extremely active in the West Valley with a strong VA-experienced lender and builder ecosystem.
White Tank Mountain Regional Park (10 min from base) is the closest and most popular trail system — 30,000 acres with varied hiking for all levels. Lake Pleasant Regional Park (~25 miles north) offers boating, fishing, and camping. Estrella Mountain Regional Park (Goodyear) has 17,000 acres of desert trails and recreation. Further out, Sedona’s red rock country is 2 hours northeast, and the Grand Canyon South Rim is 3.5 hours north. Arizona Snowbowl near Flagstaff (2.5 hours) offers skiing from November through April — a remarkable contrast to the desert heat that surprises most newcomers.
