Real talk on traffic: I-5 through Tacoma is consistently among the worst bottlenecks in the Pacific Northwest. If your off-base neighborhood puts you on I-5 southbound during morning rush hour, add 20–45 minutes to any commute estimate. Six elementary schools operate on JBLM, all part of the Clover Park School District (CPSD). Madigan Army Medical Center is JBLM’s flagship medical facility and one of the largest military hospitals in the United States. Specifically, it is located at 9040 Jackson Ave., Tacoma, WA 98431, and serves more than 100,000 active-duty service members, their families, and retirees.
Madigan offers a full spectrum of care including general medical and surgical services, adult and pediatric primary care, a 24-hour emergency room, specialty clinics, OB/GYN, behavioral health, and a dedicated Center for Autism Resources, Education and Services (CARES). For appointments, the main line is (800) 404-4504. Call the TRICARE Nurse Advice Line at (800) 874-2273, Option 1, for nurse advice. The McChord Medical Clinic at 690 Barnes Blvd. provides comprehensive primary care for McChord Field-side families. Overall, JBLM falls under the TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance.

Report to the JBLM Reception Center at Building 2021 Pendleton Ave., Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA 98433. Notably, the Reception Center operates 24/7 at (253) 967-7004. Arrive in Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) uniform with your copy of orders, DA Form 31, medical and dental records, and your military personnel file. Waller Hall at 2140 Liggett Ave., (253) 967-9494, is the central hub for all follow-on in-processing. Specifically, services at Waller Hall include Military Personnel Division, Finance, ID cards and DEERS enrollment, Army Community Service (AFCS), and the School Liaison Office. Customer service hours are generally Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. For example, finance briefings for newly arriving Soldiers run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 9:45 a.m. in Room 200B.
