You may have seen “Fort Cavazos” on older documents, maps, and websites. On June 11, 2025, the installation was officially redesignated Fort Hood. The redesignation honors Col. Robert Benjamin Hood, a World War I hero who received the Distinguished Service Cross for directing artillery fire under enemy attack in France. A formal ceremony took place July 28, 2025, at III Armored Corps Headquarters. Consequently, Fort Hood is the correct and official name. Any reference to Fort Cavazos on your orders or older paperwork simply reflects the previous 2023–2025 designation.

The 2026 BAH rates for Fort Hood represent a meaningful increase from 2025 levels. An E-5 with dependents receives $1,695 per month. In Killeen or Harker Heights, that comfortably covers a solid 3-bedroom rental. In fact, average 3-bedroom rents in the area range from $1,100–$1,400 in Killeen, $1,200–$1,500 in Harker Heights, and $1,000–$1,300 in Copperas Cove. For E-6 and above, a 4-bedroom home is within reach in most neighborhoods. On-post housing at Fort Hood is privatized and managed by Cavalry Family Housing (Lend-Lease). Overall, the neighborhoods offer included utilities, 24-hour maintenance, playgrounds, community pools, and a close-knit military community. Additionally, apply as soon as you have orders — waitlists exist, and early applications improve your options significantly.
Pet policy: 2 pets per household (dogs and/or cats). Note: Quality varies by neighborhood — some villages are newer while others are older and dated. Research the specific neighborhood before accepting. The Clear Creek area communities tend to be the newest construction on post.
Most military families at Fort Hood live off post. Importantly, knowing which gate your Soldier uses daily will significantly shape your neighborhood decision. The installation is enormous — 215,000 acres — and your commute time depends heavily on where you live and which gate you access.
Harker Heights is the top choice for military families PCSing to Fort Hood. Located between Killeen and Belton, it offers better schools on average, newer homes, a safer feel, and a 15–20 minute commute via the Clear Creek Gate. Furthermore, you will find a Super Target, movie theater, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and solid dining options. Average 3-bedroom rents run $1,200–$1,500 per month. Overall, Harker Heights delivers the best balance of schools, safety, and commute for most ranks.
Killeen is the city directly adjacent to the main gate, and it is 100% a military town. On one hand, the commute is short and the prices are lowest in the area. On the other hand, Killeen has pockets of higher crime and a cookie-cutter suburban feel. Specifically, areas east of I-14 are generally less desirable. However, there are nicer pockets — especially newer developments on the north side. Average rents for a 3-bedroom home run $1,100–$1,400 per month.
Nolanville sits near Harker Heights and has grown significantly in recent years. It offers newer construction homes at competitive prices, a family-friendly atmosphere, and reasonable access to the installation. Additionally, school options here are comparable to Harker Heights. Nolanville represents a strong value pick for families who want newer housing at slightly lower prices.
Copperas Cove is located west of base off Hwy 190 and offers a quieter, more rural feel. A back gate provides direct access to the installation, which is a significant advantage. However, shopping is limited — primarily a Walmart and HEB. Similarly, entertainment options are sparse compared to Harker Heights. Rents for a 3-bedroom typically run $1,000–$1,300 per month. Copperas Cove works well for families who prioritize a quiet environment over shopping convenience.
Belton sits east of Killeen and is a more expensive area with larger homes and a mixed civilian-military population. Moreover, it features beautiful Lake Belton and generally strong schools in Belton ISD. However, the commute can run 30–45 minutes without traffic. Overall, Belton is ideal for families who prioritize quality of life, school ratings, and are comfortable with a longer daily drive.

Insider tip: Use Trimmier Road instead of Rancier Avenue during rush hours. Rancier is a parking lot. Additionally, tank crossings do happen on post roads — plan for occasional brief waits.

In-processing at Fort Hood is a 10-day process. Understanding it in advance reduces stress significantly on your first days at the installation.
All arriving Soldiers report to the Copeland Soldier Service Center (CSSC), Building 18010, located at the corner of TJ Mills Boulevard and Battalion Avenue.
The Installation Reception Center (IRC) is the initial point of contact for arriving Soldiers. Notably, the IRC coordinates transportation from Killeen Regional Airport, provides temporary lodging, and begins the in-processing sequence. Soldiers are divided into two groups: Juniors (CPL/SPC and below) and Seniors (SGT and above).
During the 10-day period, Soldiers complete mandatory briefings, medical and dental appointments, and administrative requirements. Specifically, those include Finance, a Sexual Assault Briefing, and the Commanding General’s Newcomers Brief. Additionally, all Soldiers must obtain a Phantom Express pass (vehicle registration and insurance required) before release to their gaining unit.
Soldiers in the rank of LTC and above, CW4–CW5, and SGM–CSM do not report to the Reception Detachment. Instead, they receive their in-processing checklist at the CSSC front desk. Furthermore, Finance Brief for these personnel is conducted Fridays only at 1430 in CSSC Room B112.
On-post temporary lodging options include Poxon House and Keith Ware Hall. Additionally, off-post hotels are located a few miles from the main gate along North Central Texas Expressway (US 190). Reserve temporary lodging early, particularly during peak PCS season (May–August).

School quality is one of the most important factors for military families choosing where to live near Fort Hood. Consequently, understanding the district boundaries and ratings before you commit to a neighborhood is essential. Specifically, the neighborhood you choose determines your school district — so research this first.
Most families living in Killeen, Harker Heights, Nolanville, and on-post will fall under Killeen ISD, which serves approximately 40,000+ students across 49+ campuses. The district received a C rating from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in both 2024 and 2025. However, individual campus performance varies significantly within the district.

Several elementary schools operate directly on the installation, serving families in on-post neighborhoods. These include Clarke Elementary and Montague Village Elementary, both located on post and part of Killeen ISD. Both schools are convenient for on-post families and reflect the diverse military community of the installation.
Families living in Copperas Cove will enroll in Copperas Cove ISD, which received B ratings from the TEA in both 2024 and 2025 — outperforming Killeen ISD at the district level. Similarly, families in Belton attend Belton ISD, which is well regarded and consistently rated above average. Both districts are therefore worth considering if school quality is your top priority and you are willing to accept a longer commute.
The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) does not currently operate schools directly at Fort Hood; instead, Killeen ISD handles on-post schooling. For families seeking private options, Temple and Belton have several well-reviewed private schools within commuting distance. Fort Hood is home to one of the largest military medical facilities in the country. Overall, healthcare coverage for military families here is comprehensive and accessible.
The Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center is the installation’s primary hospital and one of the largest in the Military Health System. The 947,000-square-foot facility opened in 2016 and serves over 42,000 active duty personnel and 145,000+ family members and veterans within a 40-mile radius.
TRICARE Prime enrollees at Fort Hood will use CRDAMC as their primary care facility. For TRICARE information or beneficiary assistance, contact the TRICARE Service Center inside the medical center. Additionally, Troop Medical Clinics (TMCs) serve active duty personnel for routine sick call and preventive care. Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple (~30 miles east) provides additional specialty and civilian healthcare options. Moreover, Scott & White is frequently used for specialist referrals when on-post specialty care has a longer wait. Temple also has several urgent care and pediatric clinics that TRICARE covers.

On-post Child Development Centers accept children from 6 weeks to 5 years of age. However, waitlists can be long — especially during peak PCS season. Youth Services also offers after-school programs, sports leagues, summer camps, and teen centers for school-age children.
The Fort Hood area job market for military spouses is concentrated in healthcare, education, government contracting, and retail. Notably, remote work for Austin- and Dallas-based companies is increasingly common and represents one of the best opportunities for spouses seeking career-level employment. Fort Hood’s on-post recreation facilities are extensive. Fort Hood is “Big Army.” The culture centers on readiness, large-scale training, and the traditions of the armor and cavalry branches. If your Soldier is in a Brigade Combat Team (BCT) under 1st Cavalry Division or III Corps, expect a high operational tempo. Deployments and National Training Center (NTC) rotations happen regularly. Support units rotate and field train frequently as well. Plan accordingly — a strong local community matters here more than at many installations.
Central Texas summers are brutal. Temperatures regularly reach 100–110°F from June through September, and triple digits can extend into October. Budget $200–$350 per month for electricity during summer — air conditioning is not optional, it is survival. However, winters are mild (50–65°F), and spring and fall are genuinely pleasant.
Killeen’s entire economy orbits Fort Hood. Almost every business, service, and job in town connects to the military in some way. On one hand, this means the community understands military life deeply. On the other hand, it means limited “big city” options locally. School quality varies significantly by neighborhood. Killeen ISD received a C district rating from the Texas Education Agency in 2025, but individual campuses differ considerably. Harker Heights High School scored an 86 (B) in 2025 and is generally the strongest option for high school within KISD. Families willing to commute further can access Copperas Cove ISD (B rating) or Belton ISD, both of which outperform the district average.
