TL;DR: Thousands of military families PCS to Fort Hood every year. These are the top 25 local hot spots that we are seeing military members recommend in Bell County in 2026.
Since 2016 PCS Pay It Forward® has been dedicated to connecting military families with housing, resources, support, local businesses and establishments to make their military move easier. We’ve had thousands of military members drop local recommendations through our Fort Hood PCS Pay It Forward® support group. These are the top 25 that stood out this year!
How We Picked These 25 Fort Hood Hot Spots
This list starts as a research draft, not a finished ranking. Our team pulled every candidate from public sources, then verified addresses, phone numbers, hours and ratings one by one. Next, the full list goes to the Fort Hood PCS Pay It Forward® group. Families on the ground correct it before anything gets printed.
What Did Not Make the Fort Hood List
Anything on post stayed off. The commissary, the Clear Creek Exchange and BLORA are all worth your time. However, this list exists to get your family off post and into Bell County. For on-post housing, gates, schools and in-processing, our Fort Hood base guide covers all of it.
National chains also stayed off, even the ones every soldier eats at. Additionally, we cut anything under roughly a 4.0 rating, anything recently sold, and anything a single person kept promoting. Killeen loses restaurants fast, so recent closures got cut too.
Military Discounts on This List
Many of our Top 25 Best of Base winners offer military discounts year round as well as Veterans and Memorial Day specials. Full details, and what to ask for at each stop, sit in the discount section further down this page.

In fact, do not judge this place by the strip-center front. Inside, the molcajete arrives sizzling and the tortillas taste like somebody’s aunt made them. Furthermore, breakfast runs from 7 a.m., which matters when your soldier has a 0600 formation and you are up anyway.
What to order at El Taquero
Get the molcajete if two of you are splitting. Otherwise, the chilaquiles are the move before 11 a.m.

Steven Rossler served roughly two decades as an Army infantryman and earned a Bronze Star with valor in Afghanistan. Consequently, the name carries weight: the blue cord is the infantry cord. He and his wife Kristen opened the trailer near post. Since then, Rossler’s Blue Cord Barbecue has earned a spot on the Texas Monthly Top 50 list.
Brisket is the headline. However, the sides are not filler. Specifically, the elote pasta salad and the raspberry-glazed pork belly burnt ends get named over and over.
The Rossler’s timing trick
Because they run only two service days a week, they sell out. Check their Facebook page the morning of, then go early.
Best Burger Near Fort Hood: Galaxy B&G

Admittedly, the building looks like nothing from the road. Inside, though, you get pool, air hockey and arcade games at no charge while you wait. That combination makes this the easiest weeknight dinner in Killeen with small kids.
Overall, the burgers run creative without getting silly. For example, one swaps the bun for a quesadilla, and the burger-fries-drink combo lands under ten dollars.

High ceilings, an open kitchen and a deep wine list set the tone. Consequently, this is the promotion-dinner spot for many Fort Hood families. Lobster ravioli and chicken parmesan draw the most repeat orders. Meanwhile, the chocolate cake is large enough to take half of it home.
Reserve before you drive to Temple
This is a 40-minute trip each way, and weekend tables go early. Call ahead rather than chancing the wait.
Best Family Restaurant Near Fort Hood: Cassidy’s Grill

Let us be honest about this one slot. Late night in Killeen is thin, and most kitchens shut down by ten. Vida Roxy is the exception on Friday and Saturday. Leather booths, a full bar and a short late menu run until two.
Salsa lessons run on Thursday evenings. This one is newer than most entries here. Therefore, tell us in the group if you know a better answer.

Best Ice Cream Near Fort Hood: Sprinkles on Top Ice Creamery

Ube, lavender honey, bourbon vanilla and butter pecan all rotate through the case here. Families also rate the ice-cream-stuffed donuts, which sound excessive and are. Staff behavior is a big part of why this one keeps getting named.

Go early to Pfeifer’s
Similarly, pastries sell out well before closing. Saturday at 7 a.m. is when the case is full.

Most families stationed here never learn this place exists. Yet it is one of the largest planetariums in Texas, sitting on the Central Texas College campus. Shows wrap the screen all the way around you, tickets are cheap, and show times rotate weekly.
Check the show before you drive over
Programming skews young on some days and older on others. Call the box office and ask which show is running.
Best Free Thing to Do Near Fort Hood: Chalk Ridge Falls Park
A real waterfall, clear limestone creek, and no entry fee.

- Open daily 8 a.m.–7 p.m.
- Military discount: Free to enter — no pass required
Chalk Ridge sits below the Stillhouse Hollow dam. Consequently, the water runs clear enough to see the bottom. Trails here are short, shaded and easy with kids. Bring water shoes, because the creek bed is all rock.
Snakes do show up along the water below the dam, though. Keep small kids close, and stay on the trail rather than wading downstream.
If Chalk Ridge is packed
Dana Peak Park on Stillhouse Hollow is the backup, about 20 minutes from Harker Heights. Bring your America the Beautiful military annual pass for entry.
Best Day Trip From Fort Hood: Cameron Park Zoo

This one sits on 17 acres just outside the Bernie Beck gate. Visiting relatives without base access can meet you here. Over 12,000 square feet of galleries trace mounted warfare from the Revolution through today. Consequently, it absorbed the old 1st Cavalry Division and 3rd Cavalry Regiment museums that closed in 2021.
Step inside a fully equipped UH-1 Huey while wind and lights simulate a jungle insertion. Night vision simulators, code-breaking puzzles and soldier testimonial booths fill the rest. An M1 Abrams sits parked out front.
Go on a Thursday morning
The Horse Cavalry Detachment sits next door. A live cavalry demonstration typically runs Thursday at 10 a.m. Afterward, pull around for the guided barn tour and meet the horses.
Best Kids Activity Near Fort Hood: Topsey Exotic Ranch & Park

- 945 Co Rd 118, Copperas Cove, TX 76522 · (254) 547-3700
- 20–25 minutes to the Clarke Road Gate
- Open daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
- Military discount: Not published online — ask at the gate
You drive the loop in your own vehicle, and the animals come to you. Feed buckets run roughly six dollars for a medium and twelve for a large. Buy the extra bucket, because families consistently run out before the loop ends.
The full loop takes about an hour, plus a walk-through area with goats and kangaroos. Go early in the morning when the animals are most active.
Prep the car first
Windows get slobbered on and feed gets spilled. Therefore, take the car you do not mind cleaning afterward.
Best Teen Hangout Near Killeen: AREA 254

- 901 S Fort Hood St, Killeen, TX 76541 · (254) 213-2660
- 4–6 minutes to the Bernie Beck Main Gate
- Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m.–10 p.m.; Friday 11 a.m.–midnight; Saturday 10 a.m.–midnight
- Military discount: Not published online — ask at the front desk
Bell County is thin on teen options, and everybody stationed here knows it. AREA 254 fills that gap with the widest spread in town, including head-first slides and inflatable hatchet throwing. Robots run the food out to your table, which teenagers pretend not to find impressive.
Birthday parties are the other reason families keep naming it. Midnight closing on Friday and Saturday makes it the strongest weekend answer near post.
Check the package before you pay
Trampoline access is bundled into timed packages rather than sold by the hour. Ask at the desk which package fits your visit.
Local Shops and Markets in Killeen and Salado
Best Local Shop Near Fort Hood: The Strawberry Patch of Salado
Fifty years of Texas jams, pecans and roasted coffee in one small storefront.

- Wednesday through Saturday 11 a.m.–7 p.m.; Sunday 1–5 p.m. — closed Monday and Tuesday
- Military discount: Not published online — ask at the counter
Clothing, jewelry, home decor and gifts fill this one, much of it made by people in this area. Custom pressing on shirts and canvas totes runs in house. Notably, the owners greet regulars by name and remember what you were shopping for last time.
Where to find a going-away gift
PCS season means farewell gifts, and this is the local answer. Shoppers rarely walk out with only the thing they came in for.
Best Farmers Market Near Fort Hood: Killeen’s Local Farmers Market
One Saturday a month, rain or shine, in the Murdoch’s parking lot.
- Murdoch’s parking lot, 701 E Central Texas Expy, Killeen, TX 76541
- 8–11 minutes to the Bernie Beck Main Gate
- One Saturday each month, 9 a.m.–2 p.m., year-round
- Military discount: Not published online — ask each vendor
Produce, pasture-raised protein, eggs, local honey, jams and baked goods all fill the lot. Because this market runs monthly rather than weekly, check the 2026 date list before you drive over. Bring cash, since several vendors do not take cards.
Fort Hood Base Legends: The Places Every Unit Knows
Best Brewpub Near Fort Hood: Bird Creek Brewing
Temple’s downtown brewery, and the burger everybody argues about.

- Price: $$
- Military discount: Not published online — ask at the bar
Nearly 2,000 reviews sit behind this one, and most of them are about the burgers rather than the beer. The jammed popper and the bulgogi get named most. Additionally, plant-based patties mean the vegetarian in your group is not stuck with a side salad.
Street parking runs along South 4th, and downtown Temple construction occasionally reroutes it. Check before a Friday night drive.
Best Barbecue in Belton: Schoepf’s BBQ
Three decades of brisket, plus a live music stage out back.
- 702 E Central Ave, Belton, TX 76513 · (254) 939-1151

- Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m.–7:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday until 8 p.m.
- Price: $$
- Military discount: Not published online — ask at the counter
Ronnie and Staci Schoepf have grown this into a Belton destination since the early nineties. Meanwhile, brisket tacos, street corn and a Tex-Mex slant separate it from standard Central Texas pits. Furthermore, the outdoor venue books real touring Texas artists.
Check the music calendar first
The kitchen closes at 8 p.m. even on show nights. Eat first, then stay for the set.
Best Brisket Near Fort Hood: Miller’s Smokehouse
A Texas Monthly Top 50 pit that also happens to make the best breakfast tacos in Bell County.
- 300 E Central Ave, Belton, TX 76513 · (254) 939-5500
- 30–40 minutes to the Bernie Beck Main Gate

- Price: $$
- Military discount: Not published online — ask at the counter
Miller’s and Schoepf’s sit four blocks apart on the same street. That stretch of East Central Avenue is, functionally, the barbecue destination for this entire post. Order at the counter, take a table number, and your food comes to you.
Brisket, sausage and potato salad all carry the plate. However, the cinnamon roll and the brisket breakfast tacos are what turn first-timers into regulars.

How to Ask for a Military Discount Near Fort Hood
Lead with the CAC or the veteran ID rather than the question. Most counters in this town recognize it instantly. If the answer is no, ask whether they run anything for Veterans Day or Memorial Day instead.
Last verified: July 2026. Discounts and hours change — always confirm before you go.
The Best of Base Bucket List Challenge
Here is the part that turns a list into a year. Work your way through these 25, and post what you find along the way. Every month we draw one military family for a one hundred dollar gift card.
How the Challenge Works
- Go somewhere on this list. Any of the 25 counts, and the free ones count the same as the expensive ones.
- Post it. A reel, a post, or a story all work. Instagram, TikTok or Facebook.
- Tag @pcspif and use #BestofBaseBucketList so we can find you.
- That is the entry. We draw one family every month and send a one hundred dollar gift card.
Stories disappear after a day, so tag us before it drops. Public accounts let us reshare you. Private accounts still count, though you may need to send the post to us directly.
Why We Run This
Most families spend a whole tour meaning to explore and never quite doing it. Then orders come, and the list of places you never got to is longer than the list you did. This challenge exists to close that gap.
Your post also does something a review site cannot. Another family three months from PCSing here sees a real person at a real table. Suddenly Bell County looks like somewhere they could belong. Consequently, the businesses on this list see military traffic they would never have gotten otherwise.
What Makes a Post Worth Reposting
Name the place and name the gate you came from. Say what you ordered, or what you would skip. Tell the next family what you wish you had known. That is the post that actually moves someone off the couch.
What’s Overrated Near Fort Hood (And What to Skip)
Chalk Ridge Falls Suspension Bridge: What Happened to It
Half the photos you will find online feature a suspension bridge over the creek. That bridge is gone. Go for the waterfall and the clear water instead. Set expectations with the kids before you park.
Restaurant Hours in Killeen and Harker Heights
Honestly, this is the single most useful thing on this page. A remarkable number of the best local spots close Monday, Tuesday or both. Rossler’s runs two days a week. Additionally, the Waffle Den, Kitty’s Kakery and Pfeifer’s all take multi-day closures.
Google hours in this market go stale fast, too. Call before you drive, particularly on a Monday.
The Drive From Fort Hood to Austin
Everyone tells you Austin is an hour away. That holds true midweek and midmorning. By contrast, Friday afternoons on I-35 through Georgetown and Round Rock can turn one hour into two. Therefore, leave before 2 p.m. or after 7 p.m.
Rancier Avenue vs. Trimmier Road at Rush Hour
Rancier is the obvious east-west route across Killeen. Between 4 and 6 p.m., it is a parking lot. Trimmier Road is the local workaround. Similarly, tank crossings on post roads happen without warning, so build in a buffer.
Things to Do for Teens in Bell County
Be realistic about this one. Outside of AREA 254, the Conder Street skate park and the mall, options for teenagers are limited. Most families end up driving to Temple or Austin for anything bigger. Plan for that mileage rather than being surprised by it.
Belton Lake vs. Stillhouse Hollow for a Swim Day
Both lakes sit about 20 minutes out. Yet they are not interchangeable. Belton Lake has BLORA and more developed facilities. Stillhouse Hollow runs clearer and quieter, with Dana Peak Park as the main access point. Rocky shorelines are the rule at both, so pack water shoes.

Fort Hood Area FAQs: Food, Gates, and Weekends
What is there to do near Fort Hood, Texas?
Bell County gives you two lakes, a waterfall park, a planetarium and a drive-through safari. The National Mounted Warrior Museum sits right outside the main gate and costs nothing. Waco sits about an hour north, and Austin about an hour south. Most Fort Hood families build weekends around the lakes in summer and day trips in spring and fall.
What are the best restaurants near Fort Hood?
For barbecue, Rossler’s Blue Cord in Harker Heights and Miller’s Smokehouse in Belton come up most often. Galaxy B&G handles burgers and families, while Arepitas draws the biggest crowds in Harker Heights. Pignetti’s in Temple is the date-night answer when the occasion is real.
Do restaurants near Fort Hood offer military discounts?
Many do, although very few publish the terms online. Killeen and Harker Heights businesses almost universally honor something for a CAC or a veteran ID. Therefore, ask at the register every time. The discount often is not posted anywhere.
What is the closest state park to Fort Hood?
Mother Neff State Park in Moody is the closest true Texas state park, roughly 50 to 65 minutes from the main gate. It was the first state park in Texas and offers hiking, camping and a strong interpretive center. Chalk Ridge Falls Park near Belton is closer, at 30 to 40 minutes. However, it is a Corps of Engineers park rather than a state park.
Which gate should I use from Harker Heights?
Most Harker Heights families run west on I-14 and enter through either the Bernie Beck Main Gate on T.J. Mills Boulevard or the Clear Creek Gate. Clear Creek runs 24 hours, and it tends to move faster outside peak times. Your best gate ultimately depends on which side of this 215,000-acre post your soldier works on.
How far is Austin from Fort Hood?
Austin is about 65 miles south, which is an hour in light traffic. However, Friday afternoons on I-35 through Georgetown and Round Rock routinely stretch that to 90 minutes or more. Plan your departure around traffic rather than around mileage.
What is there to do with teenagers near Killeen?
Options are genuinely limited. Still, it helps to know that going in. AREA 254 on South Fort Hood Street is the strongest local answer. Bowling, arcade games and trampolines run until midnight on weekends. The renovated Conder Street skate park is free and covered, and Temple or Austin cover anything bigger.
Where can I find drop-in or hourly child care near Fort Hood?
Off-post hourly drop-in care is very hard to find in Killeen and Harker Heights. In fact, we could not confirm a single dedicated provider. Most families use full-time centers or on-post CDC hourly care when slots open. Several local learning centers also run a Parents Night Out. Ask in the Fort Hood group before you commit, because availability changes constantly.

How does the Best of Base Bucket List Challenge work?
Visit any of the 25 spots on this list, then post a reel, photo or story from your visit. Tag @pcspif on Instagram, TikTok or Facebook and use #BestofBaseBucketList. Every month we draw one military family and send a one hundred dollar gift card. Free stops like Chalk Ridge Falls and the museum count exactly the same as the sit-down meals.
What should I know about summer in Central Texas before I PCS?
Summer here runs 100 to 110 degrees from June through September, and triple digits can push into October. Outdoor plans work before 10 a.m. or after 7 p.m. Almost nothing works in between. Budget for a serious electric bill. Additionally, book your lake and park trips for spring and fall.
Key Takeaways
- Call before you drive. Half the best spots near Fort Hood close Monday, Tuesday or both, and Rossler’s serves only two days a week.
- Pick your gate first, then your restaurant. This post covers 215,000 acres, and the wrong gate adds 20 minutes to any errand.
- Belton is the barbecue destination. Miller’s Smokehouse and Schoepf’s sit four blocks apart on East Central Avenue.
- Ask for the military discount every single time. Most businesses here honor one, and almost none of them advertise it.
- Book lake and park weekends for spring and fall. Central Texas summer heat shuts down midday outdoor plans entirely.
- Work the list, then post it. Tag @pcspif with #BestofBaseBucketList from any of these 25 stops, and you are entered in that month’s one hundred dollar drawing.
- Get local intel from families already on the ground. Join the Fort Hood PCS Pay It Forward® group and ask about any address before you sign anything.
- Start your move with a plan, not a search bar. Start your free PCS Plan© and get matched with a Fort Hood ambassador who lives here now.
