About Fort Knox: Fast Facts

Fort Knox sits in north-central Kentucky, about 35 miles south of Louisville, spread across 109,000 acres spanning Hardin, Bullitt, and Meade counties. It’s a certified Kentucky city and the sixth-largest urban community in the Commonwealth — which means it functions more like a self-contained town than a typical installation.

The post is best known to outsiders for the nearby United States Bullion Depository (the gold vault), but its military mission centers on human resources and leadership development. Today’s Fort Knox is home to the U.S. Army Human Resources Center of Excellence, responsible for managing every Soldier’s career from the day they swear in through the day they depart service. That mission makes Fort Knox a hub for HR, recruiting, and training professionals across the Army.

Key units and organizations at Fort Knox:

  • V Corps
  • U.S. Army Recruiting Command
  • U.S. Army Cadet Command
  • 84th Training Command
  • 100th Training Division (Leader Development)
  • U.S. Army Human Resource Center of Excellence
  • 19th Engineer Battalion

In-Processing at Fort Knox

If you’re traveling to Fort Knox on PCS orders, report to Rockenbach Hall, Building 2020 for in-processing. If your orders include permissive TDY for house hunting, report to your gaining unit first.

Before you arrive, get your paperwork in order — orders, medical records, school records, housing applications. Our PCS binder and checklist walks you through exactly what to pull together so nothing falls through the cracks. If you’re doing a DITY or PPM move, check our DITY/PPM move guide for current weight allowances and reimbursement rules before you sign anything.

Gate access: The Chaffee ACP is open 24 hours, 7 days a week, and is the main entry point for most families. The Visitor Control Center (next to Chaffee Gate) is open 7 days a week from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. — anyone without a valid DoD ID who hasn’t previously accessed the installation will need to stop here first.

The Brandenburg ACP (off Hwy 31 North/South near Muldraugh) is dedicated for DoD ID holders, commercial deliveries, and personnel with an AIE Pass.

If you’re bringing a guest vehicle onto post, make sure your visitor has a current driver’s license and valid insurance — dependents and non-U.S. citizens may have additional requirements. Call ahead if you’re unsure.

Fort Knox BAH Rates

Fort Knox BAH is calculated for MHA KY110 and covers ZIP codes including 40121 (Fort Knox), 40160 (Radcliff), 42701 (Elizabethtown), and surrounding communities. BAH is set by your duty station assignment — not where you actually live off-post.

Here’s the good news: Fort Knox BAH goes significantly further here than at most Army installations. A 2-bedroom apartment in Radcliff or Vine Grove can run $600–$800/month, which means most enlisted families have real breathing room in their housing budget.

On-Post Housing at Fort Knox

On-post housing at Fort Knox is managed by Knox Hills, a privatized community operated by Winn Companies. It’s one of the more functional on-post housing programs you’ll encounter — utilities are included, the locations are close to the gates, and the community amenities are solid.

Knox Hills housing details:

  • Floor plans available: 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-bedroom single-family homes, duplexes, and townhomes
  • Utilities included: electricity, water, sewer, gas, trash, and recycling
  • Community amenities: playgrounds, splash park, fitness center, basketball court
  • Pet friendly
  • DoDEA K-12 school access for active-duty residents and full-time DoD employees

The Clarke neighborhood has been called out by families as a well-maintained community with older homes that feel lived-in and cared for. Waitlists can vary by bedroom count and rank — contact the housing office as soon as your orders drop.

PCS Plan tip: Our military-connected PCS Plan Ambassadors can connect you with families who’ve lived on-post at Fort Knox and give you an honest read on wait times, neighborhoods, and what to expect at check-in. It’s free and takes about 20 minutes to set up.

Off-Post Housing and Neighborhoods Near Fort Knox

This is where Fort Knox really shines for military families. The surrounding communities are affordable, family-friendly, and close enough to post that your commute won’t eat your life.

Radcliff is the city right outside the main gate and the first choice for most families. You’ll find plenty of military-friendly apartments and rentals, short commutes, and a community that’s used to welcoming new families every PCS season. Expect to pay $700–$1,100/month for a 2-bedroom apartment depending on age and updates.

Elizabethtown (E-Town) is about 15–30 minutes south depending on traffic and is the Hardin County seat. It has more dining, shopping, and entertainment options than Radcliff, plus access to the Hardin County school district if you plan to live off-post. Home prices here are reasonable — a 3-bedroom home can often be found in the $200,000–$260,000 range, which means your VA loan and BAH can work together powerfully.

Vine Grove is a quieter, slightly more rural option between Radcliff and Elizabethtown. Families who want a small-town feel with lower price points tend to gravitate here.

Brandenburg is about 20 minutes to the west and is popular with families who want a little more distance from the post hustle. It’s also home to or near Doe Valley, a gated community with a golf course, campground, lake, and marina — one of the more unique off-post options in the Fort Knox area.

Louisville is a commutable option for families who want an urban environment or whose spouse’s employment requires city access. Plenty of carpool groups exist for Soldiers and DA Civilians who work on post and live in the Louisville metro. Commute times average 40–60 minutes one way.

Real talk: Traffic on 31W between Radcliff and the post gates gets congested during morning and afternoon rush. If you’re looking at houses in E-Town, build extra time into your commute estimate — it can be closer to 30–40 minutes in peak hours, not the 15 minutes locals cite.

If you’re weighing renting vs. buying, check out our VA Home Loan guide. At Fort Knox, the numbers strongly favor buying if your tour is 2+ years — BAH often covers a full mortgage in Radcliff and Elizabethtown, and Hardin County home values have appreciated steadily in recent years. And don’t forget: many of your moving costs are tax-deductible — our PCS tax write-offs guide breaks down exactly what you can claim.

Join the Fort Knox PCS Pay-It-Forward® Facebook group to get real, current rental listings from military families, ask about specific neighborhoods, and find pet-friendly options before you arrive.

Schools at Fort Knox

Your school options depend entirely on whether you live on-post or off-post — and this is one of the most important decisions you’ll make during house hunting.

DoDEA Schools (On-Post Residents Only)

Children of active-duty residents and full-time DoD employees living in on-post housing have access to four DoDEA schools, part of the DoDEA Americas Southeast District:

School Grades
Van Voorhis Elementary School PreK–5
Macdonald Elementary School 1–5
Scott Middle School 6–8
Fort Knox High School (FKMHS) 9–12

Fort Knox High School was named to the College Board’s AP School Honor Roll and operates on a modified block schedule. DoDEA schools understand the rhythm of military life — deployments, TDYs, and mid-year transfers are handled with experience.

Important: DoDEA enrollment requires that your child be a dependent of an active-duty sponsor and that the family be living in permanent on-post housing. If you’re in TLF or off-post housing, your children will attend district schools instead.

School Liaison Office: (502) 624-2305 — contact them early if you have kids with IEPs, special education needs, or enrollment questions.

Off-Post School Options

Families living off-post typically attend schools in one of two districts depending on location:

  • Hardin County Schools — serves Elizabethtown, Radcliff, Vine Grove, and much of the Fort Knox MHA; this is the most common off-post option
  • Meade County Schools — serves Brandenburg and areas to the west

Check enrollment requirements and school assignments with your specific address — the district line matters.

Healthcare at Fort Knox

Ireland Army Health Clinic (IAHC) is the primary military treatment facility on post, offering comprehensive outpatient care including primary care, pediatrics, OB/GYN, behavioral health, dental, and more.

  • Address: 289 Ireland Avenue, Suite 851, Fort Knox, KY 40121
  • Phone: (502) 624-9333
  • Hours: Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
  • Mental Health line: (502) 624-0235

Enroll in TRICARE as soon as you have a report date — don’t wait until in-processing. Getting your primary care established quickly matters, especially if you have children who need pediatric appointments or a spouse with ongoing medical needs.

For after-hours urgent care and emergency services, the closest civilian hospitals are in the Elizabethtown and Louisville areas. TRICARE Prime Remote may apply if your specialist needs can’t be met on post.

Family Support Services

The Army Community Service (ACS) center at Fort Knox is a genuinely useful resource — not just for the “welcome to the installation” briefing, but for ongoing support throughout your tour. They offer:

  • Relocation assistance and newcomer orientation
  • Financial readiness counseling and budgeting programs
  • Family advocacy programs
  • Employment readiness for military spouses
  • EFMP (Exceptional Family Member Program) support: (502) 624-4067

If you’re a solo-parenting spouse managing a household move, reaching out to ACS before your Soldier’s report date is one of the smartest things you can do. They’ve seen every version of the PCS scenario and can point you toward community connections fast.

Recreation and Quality of Life

Fort Knox isn’t a flashy post, but it has more going on than first impressions suggest.

On-post amenities:

  • Fitness centers (multiple locations)
  • Aquatics/swimming pools
  • Bowling alley
  • Mini waterpark / splash park (adjacent to on-post housing)
  • Putt-putt golf
  • Patton Museum (free, open to the public — covers armor history, Cadet Command, and the installation)
  • Commissary, PX, Military Clothing Sales
  • Dining: Samuel Adams Brewhouse, Starbucks, Taco Bell, Burger King, Subway, and more

Off-post recreation:

  • Camp Carlson — a 65-acre Fort Knox–owned campground available to the military community, with fishing, playground areas, and outdoor recreation
  • Doe Valley — gated community with golf course, lake, marina, and campground (open to non-residents as well)
  • Louisville — 35 miles north: Kentucky Derby Museum, 21c Museum & Hotel (free admission), Frazier History Museum, incredible dining, professional sports (Louisville City FC, Louisville Cardinals), and all the urban amenities you’d expect from a major metro

The Kentucky Derby in May is one of those events that puts the entire Fort Knox region in a festive mood — even if you don’t go to Churchill Downs, you’ll feel the energy. Many families host watch parties to avoid the Derby Day crowds while still making it a tradition.

Spouse Employment and Education

The Fort Knox area is more employment-friendly for military spouses than the location might suggest. Louisville’s job market — accessible within an hour — offers opportunities in healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and education. Elizabethtown and Radcliff have their own local economies, though options are more limited.

On-post, the Spouse Education Assistance Program and Employment Readiness Program through Army Community Service can connect you with federal job opportunities, resume help, LinkedIn coaching, and job fairs.

For higher education, Elizabethtown Community and Technical College is close by, and several programs through the Army Continuing Education System (ACES) are available on post.

Getting Around: Transportation

Fort Knox is a drive-everywhere area. There is limited public transportation in and around the post, so plan on having at least one reliable personal vehicle — ideally two if both spouses work or manage separate school/activity schedules.

If you’re commuting to Louisville for work, there are organized carpool networks among Soldiers and DA Civilians. Ask about carpooling options during in-processing or through your unit’s family readiness channels.

The post is accessible via Highway 31W from the north and south, and I-65 is easily accessible from Elizabethtown for longer trips.

Prepare for Kentucky Weather

One thing Fort Knox locals say repeatedly: don’t throw away your winter coat, and don’t assume you know what the season will be. Kentucky weather is notoriously unpredictable.

  • Winters are cold and damp, with occasional ice and snow — some years bring more than others, and a Christmas in the 70s is not unheard of
  • Summers are warm and humid, with highs regularly in the mid-to-upper 80s in June and July
  • Spring and fall are beautiful — outdoor patios open back up around late March and you’ll want to be outside as much as possible
  • Rain is frequent throughout the year, especially in spring and summer — downpours are common

If you’re coming from a desert installation or the Pacific Northwest, the humidity will be a real adjustment. Plan your wardrobe accordingly.

Is Fort Knox a Good Duty Station?

Honestly? Yes — especially for enlisted families and those early in their careers. The cost of living advantage is real and measurable. Your BAH goes further here than at almost any other Army post, the community is established and military-friendly, and Louisville gives you a major metro within easy reach.

The post mission is heavily HR and administrative, which means deployment tempo at Knox tends to be lower than at combat-heavy installations. That’s not universal — V Corps and certain units still deploy — but many families find the pace here allows for more stability than previous assignments.

It’s not a coastal post with a long waitlist for every activity or neighborhood. But if you come in looking for community, you’ll find it quickly.
