McConnell Air Force Base was established in 1941 as Wichita Army Airfield. In 1951, it was renamed to honor brothers Fred and Thomas McConnell — both Wichita natives and World War II Air Force pilots. Today, the base spans 4.1 square miles and supports approximately 5,600 military personnel and their families.
The 22nd Air Refueling Wing is the host unit, flying both the KC-135 Stratotanker and the newer KC-46 Pegasus. In addition, the Air National Guard’s 184th Wing also calls McConnell home. Consequently, aerial refueling is the base’s core mission — extending the range of U.S. and allied aircraft across the globe.
McConnell sits about 10 miles southeast of downtown Wichita. Wichita is the largest city in Kansas, with a metro population of over 623,000. Furthermore, more than one million people live within 100 miles. Major aviation employers here — Spirit AeroSystems, Textron Aviation, and Bombardier — make it a strong market for military spouses in aerospace, manufacturing, healthcare, and education.
Notably, the cost of living runs approximately 15% below the national average. As a result, your BAH typically covers rent or mortgage comfortably, and many families find it possible to own a home for less than they were renting elsewhere.

On-base family housing at McConnell is privatized and currently managed by Mayroad. Homes range from two to four bedrooms, in both single-family and duplex layouts, assigned based on rank and family size. Moreover, all homes are pet-friendly and include kitchen appliances, washer and dryer hookups, and lawn care. Water, sewer, and trash are also included.
On-base housing falls within the Derby Unified School District (USD 260) — a Purple Star-designated district with strong military-family support programs. As a result, families in base housing have immediate access to established support networks and military-connected school resources.

Single Airmen ranked E-1 through E-3, and E-4 with fewer than three years of service, are required to live in unaccompanied housing. Each room includes furnishings, bed linens, and all basic supplies. E-4s with more than three years of service may live off base.

Most McConnell families choose to live off base, and the Wichita metro area offers solid options at every price point. In fact, Kansas real estate remains well below the national average — making this a strong market for first-time homebuyers using a VA Home Loan.
Derby is the most popular choice for McConnell families. It sits directly south of the base and offers quiet suburban neighborhoods, newer construction, and some of the most family-friendly schools in the region. Furthermore, its proximity to the base gate makes for short commutes. Derby homes typically range from $220,000 to $350,000.
East Wichita is another strong option, particularly for families who want more urban amenities nearby. Neighborhoods like Tallgrass and Kellogg East offer newer developments with easy access to shopping, restaurants, and the base. Similarly, home prices in East Wichita run slightly higher than Derby — typically $240,000 to $380,000.
Located northwest of McConnell, Andover is a fast-growing suburb with excellent schools and a strong sense of community. Notably, Andover USD 385 offers Advanced Placement courses and dual-credit college options at the high school level. Expect to pay $260,000 to $400,000 for homes here.
Both Haysville and Mulvane offer more affordable options south of Wichita. In contrast to Derby and Andover, these communities have a smaller-town feel — shorter lines, quieter streets, and tight-knit neighborhoods. Specifically, Mulvane is about 10 miles south of the base and is popular with families who prefer rural space.
Families living in on-base housing automatically enroll in Derby Public Schools (USD 260). Derby holds the Kansas State Department of Education’s Purple Star Designation — recognizing exceptional support for military-connected students. Additionally, the district recently launched a Military-Connected Educational Partnership Council in partnership with McConnell AFB leadership.
Military-connected students make up approximately 11-14% of USD 260’s enrollment. The district operates 12 schools total, including Wineteer Elementary — located directly adjacent to base housing at 8801 E. Ent Dr., Wichita, (316) 684-0097. Students in grades 6-12 living on base are bused to Derby Middle School and Derby High School.

Off-base families may fall within Wichita Public Schools (USD 259), the largest district in Kansas with over 50,000 students across 56 elementary schools, 16 middle schools, and 10 high schools. Furthermore, USD 259 offers 26 magnet programs and an International Baccalaureate (IB) program at East High School.
The McConnell area is served by 14 school districts covering more than 175 schools. Similarly, strong options exist beyond Derby — Andover USD 385 serves growing suburbs northwest of Wichita with strong AP and dual-credit programs, and Goddard USD 385 lies to the west. On-base college programs include classes through Southwestern College, Butler Community College, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, and Webster University. Additionally, the Education Office provides tuition assistance, CCAF enrollment, testing services, and commissioning program support.
McConnell’s Medical Treatment Facility provides primary care for active-duty members and enrolled family members. For specialty care, TRICARE network providers throughout the Wichita metro are widely available. Additionally, the base veterinary clinic offers routine care for pets — however, it does not perform surgeries. Specialty and emergency vet care is available at multiple Wichita clinics.

McConnell AFB has multiple gate access points. All visitors must present valid identification at the gate. Active-duty members, retirees, and DoD civilians with valid CAC cards may use self-service lanes. For the most current gate hours and access procedures, contact the McConnell AFB official website or the Pass and ID office before arrival.
Upon arrival, report to the Airman & Family Readiness Center (AFRC) to begin in-processing. Specifically, the AFRC coordinates Newcomers Orientation, school liaison services, spouse employment resources, and relocation assistance. Arrive with your orders, household goods documents, and medical records if possible. Furthermore, use the Air Force Housing Early Assistance Tool (HEAT) before your move to connect with the McConnell housing team in advance.
Wichita offers a full slate of family-friendly activities without big-city prices. The Old Town District downtown features restaurants, live music, and weekend events. Similarly, Botanica Wichita Gardens draws families year-round. For kids, Exploration Place science museum and the Sedgwick County Zoo are both highly rated. Wichita’s job market is one of the strongest in the Midwest for military spouses. Major employers in aviation, healthcare, and education actively recruit military-connected candidates.
